It was interesting information, but there wasn't much for Naoko to jump on. She'd been sort of hoping he could give her a major talking point so she could delay opening the door a bit longer. No such luck. And, if she was being honest with herself, if she lingered in the entrance that much longer her mom was going to open the door herself.

"Come on in," Naoko said, letting herself in and gesturing for Devias to enter as well. "We're a shoes off household, so you can just leave them in the doorway," she added, kicking her own shoes off as she did before tucking them to the side of the entranceway and stepping inside.

"I'm home!" She yelled, in case it wasn't already painfully obvious she was home, and her mother immediately rounded the corner.

The family resemblance was strong. The same light eyes, and similar hair even if Naoko's was slightly darker. Both Naoko and her mother had their hair pulled up into buns, although Naoko's was far messier. The same height, the same cheek structure... no one would mistake them as anything other than related.

Her father, who appeared not much longer, was less obvious. It was only under scrutiny that the similarities appeared. He was a tall man, with wide shoulders and a perpetual scowl that might have been intimidating if not for his body language--perpetually nervous bordering on terrified, lingering half around the corner as if expecting to dart off at any moment. He hung back, while Naoko's mother headed for the door.

"You must be Devias," she said, offering a hand for a shake before catching on to Naoko's gesturing and bowing instead. "It's very nice to meet you - welcome to our home."

A shoes off household? Devias recalled hearing of that tradition in Japan. It surely had its reasons, but he hadn't learned of them yet. Though if he had to guess he'd say it was to keep the inside of the house cleaner by not tracking in dirt and dust. It made sense to do it that way when magic isn't as widely used to do tasks like cleaning. But superstition was also prominent, so that could be a candidate as well. He would need to ask Naoko about it later.

As he followed Naoko, Devias took off his shoes and neatly put them away next to Naoko's and stepped inside as well.

Upon Naoko's announcement of her arrival, they were greeted by a woman who Devias assumed to be Naoko's mother. And under his gaze, he could pick out a number of features that solidified his guess. A few moments later, another figure appeared, seemingly keeping himself half-hidden. He had a stern look, but the way he held himself told a different story. Not seeing anyone else around, Devias assumed this was Naoko's father. And while the resemblances weren't as strong with Naoko's mother, her father did have subtler similarities.

"It is an honor to be welcomed so warmly," Devias said, bowing to her shortly after. "Thank you for having me, ma'am. It's a pleasure to meet you."

If Naoko had her way, she'd have simply moved away almost immediately. She didn't want a prolonged introduction. Only that would be unbelievably rude, and her mother would get annoyed if she did, so Naoko instead patiently waited for the introductions to finish themselves so they could get on with things that weren't Devias introducing himself to her parents.

"You can call me miss Tanaka," Naoko's mother added, glancing between Devias and Naoko carefully. "I was told you're going to be watching a movie for the film club - would you like to stay for dinner?"

Two feet behind Devias and a bit to the right, Naoko considered her options: Maybe she could spontaneously will herself to burst into flames if she thought about it hard enough? Why was her mother asking if he wanted to stay for dinner?

Miss? Was she not married? The slight surprise on his face might have hinted this line of thought, though he wasn't going to ask in case that was a difficult subject to discuss.

He nodded when Miss Tanaka asked if they were going to be watching a movie, and considered her offer on staying for dinner. This family was certainly hospitable. First he was invited in and now he was invited to stay for dinner. Usually this offer was reserved for people the family knew very well. As far as he knew, Devias was a complete stranger to Naoko's parents.

Devias turned to Naoko, unsure how to answer. "If it's not too much of a bother. I wouldn't want to overstay my welcome nor would I want to decline your hospitality."

In truth, it was next to no issue at all. They were married--although they'd only married after arriving on Manta Carlos--but Naoko's mother had always found miss sounded better than any alternatives.

Naoko wouldn't have even thought it was odd.

"Of course it wouldn't be a bother," Naoko's mother said without missing a beat, while Naoko tried not to cringe. It wasn't that she didn't want him to stay over--she was fine with that--she was just more than a bit wary of all the things that could go wrong at said dinner.

"If you have anyone you need to call, you're free to use the home phone," she added. "And otherwise I suppose I should let you two get to your movie!"

Naoko's father hadn't said a word, still half-hidden behind his wife. He was at least watching, however, lurking to the side and clearly trying to size up Devias as well as he could.

"Good idea! The living room with the TV is right this way," Naoko said, doing everything short of physically pushing Devias into the living room, her parents letting them go.

Why was meeting the parents so hard?

With a subtle smile, Devias said, "Then I will gladly accept your invitation, Miss Tanaka. Your hospitality is much appreciated." There was no lack of sincerity in his voice, and while keeping his tone, he had to say, "And that won't be necessary. I will just send a message to my cousin letting her know where I'll be."

Devias was a young man who wasn't muscularly impressive, however he wasn't skinny nor was he below average when it came to physical strength. Posture-wise he held himself with discipline, standing up straight with his weight balanced on both legs. He kept himself neat, but not obsessively so. His gaze was relaxed but had a sharpness to them as if they had been trained to pick out the most minuscule of details around him.

Overall, he looked like your typical introverted over-achiever who enjoys the peace and quiet of a library over loud parties or other social gatherings.

However there was an air of anxiety drifting through his mind. He had not expected to stay longer than it would take to finish a movie and then helping tidy up. He was not prepared to partake dinner in another household. Things could go badly as he hadn't learned about the family's preferences when it came to etiquette. He will have to ask Naoko about this later so he wouldn't offend Naoko's parents.

He nodded to Naoko and then to her parents before he followed her to the living room. "Your mother is a lovely lady, Naoko. Kind and welcoming."

Truthfully, Devias had nothing to worry about. Naoko's mother dealt with people from all kinds of cultures, and anything short of literally spitting in her face was going to be glossed over without issue.

In a lot of way, the living room reflected that. It was more western in style, but with plenty of signs that it wasn't just western. Even if much of the design was akin to an american room, the squat, flat couch and long flat table were a compromise of sorts. People could still sit on the floor beside it, or they could take the couch, and Naoko herself took the couch, reaching over to fumble for the remote before realizing she was going to have to get the bluray and getting right back up again.

"Thanks," Naoko said, even if she didn't really have anything to compare to. "She's always excited for guests, honestly. We've got a lot of family friends, but I don't normally bring people over rather than just meeting at the school, so I think they're excited for that."

This was a bit of a special occasion, since they'd needed the TV, and Naoko suspected her mom was reading a bit too much into it.

Devias took in the environment he had just entered. It seemed to have been designed to accommodate a mix of cultures. From the shows on the TV, he could tell where an item was likely inspired from, in general terms. Seeing this gave him a moment of peace as it meant there was a good chance of any missteps being overlooked. Though he only had a few people to base the assumption on, the statistics had a good outlook.

"Ahh, is that so?" That would explain how gleeful Miss Tanaka was, he thought.

Looking over at where Naoko sat before getting up again, he decided to sit next to her, but kept a respectable distance as to not intrude into her personal space. While waiting for the movie to start playing, Devias looked around some more to see if there were any interesting choices for decorations while also giving small talk. "Before it slips my mind, is there anything I should know for dinner? Like any actions and behaviors I should avoid."

The room had plenty of decoration, but not much that stood out. There was no family shrine, although there were several family photos, and a collection of Disney movies sat on one shelf, the cases neatly ordered by year.

"Not really," Naoko said. "My parents tried to naturalize to the island pretty quickly, so even I barely know how things are supposed to formally go. Eat what you want, ask for seconds if you want, let them know if you have any food issues we need to watch for..."

Naoko paused for a moment, then decided that pretty much covered it, popping the DVD in.

"You really, really shouldn't worry about it," Naoko said, carefully considering where to sit before deciding that the couch--close enough it wasn't going to be too close--was ideal.

Basically exactly where she'd first sat, which made her wonder if Devias was thinking the same way.

Hearing that, Devias was relieved. So long as he didn't do anything to cause damage to property or to anyone in the home including pets if they had any, he'd be fine. Shouldn't be a problem as he's a normally careful individual. Still, would that be all fine? He hadn't yet fully gauged the cultural limits of social aspects, though to be honest, things weren't all that different from the Void.

"If you say so, then I won't worry. I didn't want to give a bad impression." Which was a bit strange. He had never paid impressions a lot of thought, but now that he was actually thinking about it, he came to the conclusion that because of how fast he was invited into someone's home, considering that he and Naoko didn't know each other well enough, he was conscious of making her regret inviting him.

It was reasonable.

Though with everything going well so far, he thought it was a good sign on how everything would go. So long as he did nothing that he himself knew were rude, he should be alright.

With the movie starting, Devias sat back and just made himself comfortable.
