no need to say good bye

Her mother always said that Kristen would lose her head if it wasn't screwed on, and oh, how she would laugh if she could see her daughter right now. Kris had been ready to sleep in all Saturday morning, but then her brain decided to remind her that oh, hey, by the by, did you leave your notes in that library book you returned yesterday? After a panicked frenzy of searching through all her belongings, including backpack, notebooks, and her sock drawer, she realized that, yes, she did in fact leave her notes on the cardiovascular system in that library book she had returned yesterday, and she had a quiz on Monday.

And so her lazy Saturday morning was brought to an abrupt end; Kris yawned as she trotted towards the library, in the hopes that she could find the book again. Hopefully it was already back on the shelves... and double hopefully no one else had checked it out yet. Surely no one could be that passionate about animal anatomy to have stalked down the book the minute she had returned it, right...?

It's too early for this, Kris decided sleepily, ignoring the fact that it was 10 a.m. and plenty of people were awake by now. Some of them even for several hours! It was too ridiculous to even contemplate. She sidestepped around a puddle and continued on her way, her mind now drifting towards food and breakfast and what she should have to eat this morning, when she heard it:

A bark.

Instantly, Kristen stopped, wide awake now as her head swiveled around, eyes searching for a fuzzy head and wagging tail. A dog? There was a dog on campus?! There was a dog on campus, and she wasn't petting it right now at this exact moment in time. This was a tragedy in the making; she had to fix this immediately. Effectively forgetting about and abandoning her mission for her quiz notes, Kris followed the sound of the happily yapping dog, a small smile already on her face. It sounded like it was coming from right... around... here?

Peeking around the corner, Kris just managed to make out a blur of white fur before the dog rushed past her, chasing after a bird and barking eagerly as he went. She blinked in dull surprise, before glancing back at where he had come from, only to find a boy sitting on the ground. He must have been bowled over when the dog came running by; he had that look about him. Kris stepped up to offer him a hand and a smile, cheerfully asking, "I take it that was your puppy?"

In the words of the great philosopher and revered figure Spider-Man, "with great power comes great responsibility". Unfortunately, nobody told you how to react when you had no idea how to use those powers, and nobody could explain how Neil was going to use his. You were supposed to open windows into other worlds, but it didn't matter when the windows kept messing up.

Take today, for example. He was supposed to try to create a 1 m tear into another lifetime, but the most he'd managed was about the size of a small mouse. At least there was some progress, but it was getting frustrating. Neil cursed underneath his breath as he raised a hand, watching the rift in space grow, grow, and then shrink again. His vision went fuzzy for a moment and he raised a hand to his head.

"Ugh, never mind..."

School had never been difficult before, so power control was something else. He grimaced, raising his hand and focusing his energy again. Concentrate, Neil, concentrate--

Arf!

Neil felt his chest lurch at the sound of the barking, but managed to keep his calm. That was before a dog suddenly leaped out of the window, darting out from the dimensional portal and then practically bowling over him. "Ow!" Neil exclaimed. The dog, however, didn't seem to notice, and bounded out towards what was presumably a squirrel or something. It took a few seconds to register-- the dog had come from another world.

Crap--

"Oh god," Neil muttered, getting up on his feet. A girl had come by to ask him if he was all right, if the puppy was his, but introductions weren't quite his priority at the moment.

"Uh, not quite, but I need to get it back!" Neil said, grimacing, before starting in the direction of the dog.

Well he was certainly in a hurry. Kris supposed it was to be expected, though; she'd be in a hurry too if a dog that wasn't her's ran by. "I'll help you!" She decided as she followed after him, because she could never abandon another dog lover in need! And besides, two heads were better than one when it came to catching runaway puppies. He might be running all day if he didn't get help.

It looked like the hairy baby was still chasing birds, having stopped to bark up a tree. "You wouldn't happen to have food with you, would you?" She asked, sadly thinking about how she still hadn't had any breakfast yet. Dogs came first though, and it'd certainly be easier to catch him if they had something to bribe him with. Kris stuffed her hands into her pockets, and of course, all she had was a ball of lint and a nickel. The lint could be used if they got desperate, though, so at least that was a plan b. But right now, they had to try something else.

Kris walked forward a few steps closer, then crouched down on her knees. She whistled once, and the dog actually stopped to look at her. She beamed and gestured with her hands for him to come closer, but then the dog went right back to what he was doing. Her shoulders slumped, and she whistled again, clapping her hands gently to grab his attention. "Heeere puppy puppy, come on boy..."

It was the whitest and fluffiest of dogs, and even though Neil had been bowled over he had to admit that the dog was kind of cute. He wasn't quite sure what breed or blend of breeds it was, but it was small and cute and even though it had come from some other dimension, Neil couldn't help but think it was endearing.

The puppy was barking up a tree, yapping at some birds that had lay there to hide. "Oh god," Neil muttered underneath his breath as he watched the scene unfold. How was he supposed to deal with this-- god he did love dogs, but he'd never owned a pet and wasn't particularly good with them. The girl caught up to him, asking him if he had food. Neil frowned.

"Uh... A pack of Doritos?" Neil reached into his book bag, pulling out the packet of Super Spicy Nacho Cheese flavored chips. "I don't think we can feed these to a dog. Wait, I think I have a spare burrito from breakfast." Neil reached into his bag again, pulling the soggy food out. Ew. Before he could pass it to her though, the girl had started gesturing to the dog, beckoning for it to come over... Huh. The puppy seemed instantly charmed by the girl, trotting over at her second try. Neil held out the burrito somewhat pathetically, wondering if it'd help.

"Yeah, uh. Hey, doggy!"

Dog Boy rustled around in his bag for a few seconds and procured some spicy chips, to which Kris immediately wrinkled her nose. "Nope, no Doritos," she agreed, attention caught once again by the dog as it trotted up to her, finally deciding humans were better than birds. The boy went back to digging in his bag, and the puppy finally walked up to her and began to sniff her fingers. Kris smiled, humming a soft "Good boy~" under her breath. This time, a soggy burrito was held out to the dog, and he perked his ears in interest, snuffling at the smell...

And just like that, Kris gently snatched the dog up in her arms. "Here we go!" She cooed, snuggling the puppy against her face. He was so soft and fluffy and little and she wanted to hug him forever. Turning back to Dog Boy, she grinned. "Safe and sound! Were you walking him?" She asked curiously, as the dog yapped happily and tried to snatch a bite of the breakfast burrito in his hands.

If the dog thought that humans were better than birds, it was probably sorely wrong. Animals, Neil had found, tended to be much kinder, gentler creatures who actually cared about one another. Humans were brutal, humans were harsh. But it was that brutality that drew people to one another-- the real sort of connection forged when two met each other and realized how wonderful and terrible they were.

Though if every human had an ounce of awfulness in them, Neil was inclined to believe that this girl's was buried deep. She was so sweet and gentle with the puppy that he couldn't help but smile as she picked it up. "Hey boy-- girl-- puppy--" Neil said, extending his hand with the soggy burrito in it. Were dogs allowed to eat burritos? He had absolutely no idea.

"I wasn't walking it, actually," Neil said, smiling sheepishly. "I uh. Opened a dimension into another world and it jumped out." Oh dear-- it had a collar. Neil realized with a jolt that it probably belonged to someone else in another universe. Someone, who was probably very worried and missing their dog.

"Wait. I think it belongs to someone else. Crap, I have to return it." His eyes widened and he raised a hand for a split second, only to reel back with nausea as a window opened and closed in two seconds flat.

"Ugh, I'm still new to this."

She grinned triumphantly at the boy, as the puppy whined and snuffled at the overwhelming smell. "It's a boy!" While the dog was busy nibbling on the burrito, trying to decide whether he liked it or not, Kris checked the tag on his collar, squinting to read it. "His name is Cal, and he's from... Virginia?" She frowned; Virginia was nowhere near Buttfuck Nowhere, Pacific Ocean. Huh. That's... strange...

It was then that the boy provided an explanation, and she nodded in understanding. This was just the sort of thing you got used to hearing while living on the Manta Carlos islands. She suddenly gasped, as the full meaning behind his words finally hit her. "Is that your power? Summoning dogs from other universes?" She asked, excitedly, her eyes shining with stars in the hope that she just meant her new best friend in the whole wide world?!?!!!!? The puppy in her arms responded to her excitement in tandem, barking happily at Dog Power Boy.

Oh right, if he summoned the dog from another universe, the person who owned the dog in that universe would be wondering where he ran off to. "Ah, yeah, we really should..." She snuggled her face against the puppy's soft white fur, as Dog Power Boy lifted his hand up.....

There was a tiny blip in reality that closed just as quickly as it appeared. The boy looked sick to his stomach; it must be taxing for him to do this. And it's new for him...? He must have just started learning how to use his powers. Kris smiled gently. "Take your time, there's no rush," she said, trying to fill her voice with understanding. No pressure either; he shouldn't exhaust himself.
