He didn't know why exactly he was in the wild. He'd taken a bit of a break, perhaps, from teaching, putting his classes on hold for the past week. Things had been happening fast, and the pace of life hadn't slowed. It was in the evening, when all his lessons had been finished, and the kids were safely wherever they needed to be.

He felt a stirring in his heart, and made his way to the water's edge. It was quiet, here. Qing closed his eyes, letting a hand fall to the surface of the lake he sat by. He lowered his fingers until they made contact with the water, lightly running them over the unbroken surface. Qing felt the coolness of the water, and let the sensation flow through him, as fluidly as the element itself.

He took a breath.

Qing held it, absorbing the sounds that washed all around him. His heart quickened, sending blood through his body faster, the more he kept his breath there.

Lifting his hand, the god rose to his feet, settling himself in a comfortable stance. His legs were shoulder-width apart, his right hand held aligned with the centre of his body, and his left hand slowly rose to settle next to its partner. As he raised his hand, the water drew itself up too, a clear snake that followed his every movement.

With his eyes still closed, Qing exhaled. With a forceful breath out, he slammed his left palm outwards, and the water flew.

Kueria was tired. School had drained her more than she'd ever thought possible and she needed some time to herself. At that moment, nothing seemed more attractive that venturing into nature's embrace once again. Leaping off the windowpane, the bird relished in the crisp evening zephyrs as she soared through the backdrop of azure skies. She savored every ruffle of her feathers as her wings beat in tune to her heart's desire. This was good. This was perfect. Eventually, the forest's canopy came into view. Picking up speed, she let out a chirp of elation as she zoomed forth to her second home.

...But wait, what's that?

Within the canvas of her vision, she spotted something shimmering in the air... almost like flying water. Plagued with curiosity, she set a course to investigate. To absolutely no one's surprise, the bird rammed into the wall of water head first, sending droplets scattering everywhere like shattered glass. It was cold yet not piercingly so, almost like the gentle press of a mother's hand to her forehead. As the cooling sensation slowly enveloped her body, she instinctively shivered thus causing her not-so-graceful decent plummet into the lake.

Resurfacing almost unfazed from the impact, Kueria struggled to stay afloat as she sparred a glance around. The vicinity was tranquil and silent as ever, save for her unruly splash. After some time, her shifting gaze fixated on a male figure. Quickly making her way towards the guy, she then addressed him in her usual cheery tone:

"Hi Mister!"

He was perfectly in tune with the water. It flowed as he did, with every fluid motion of his wrists and arms. His feet rooted to the ground, Qing shifted from stance to stance, moving his hands as he did. The water followed, swirling around him with each change in position.

Suddenly, a shattering.

Qing's eyes flew open, and he lunged, thrusting his arms outward. Water unfurled around the object, encasing it in a glimmering sphere of liquid. It dropped like a stone into the lake, but Qing broke the water's surface before it did so, and the sinking was relatively smooth.

The creature emerged slowly. Qing readied himself, feet planted firmly onto the ground, shoulders slack, and arms crossed against his chest. Whatever manner of creature that was this careless was a creature he needn't be afraid of. Instead, he watched with a cool, amused eye, as it surfaced.

He noticed its struggles, and without a second thought, moved his hands in an anticlockwise arc. Likewise, the creature would find the water had begun to swirl under its feet, and if it ceased to struggle, the water would carry its weight.

"Watch it, kiddo," Qing replied, raising an eyebrow, bemused. The bird was a bright, fabulous pink. Its head was huge. Qing had a feeling that if it were to climb fully out of the water, it would be taller than himself. But was it a match for a god? He raised his left hand, then, and the water lifted underneath the bird, setting it gently onto the grass. "You okay?"

Before Kueria could fully comprehend the situation around her, she felt the smooth shifting of water beneath her feet. It was peculiar; something she'd never in her wildest dreams think she'd experience. The water was alive, moving and shifting like it had a soul of its own as it carried her weight. Peering upwards, she noticed the male conform his body into all sorts of stances, swiftly switching between each one with the fluidity of water itself. The bird simply stared dumbfoundedly as she was lifted off out of the lake as her mind did its best to piece two and two together.

Plopping on the ground, she remained silent for a few beats as she sat, legs outstretched as her bum contacted the forest floor. Kueria was suddenly hyperaware of the good 30 centimeters she had on the very adult looking male. For lack of better words, a salient pink cloud encapsulated her as she poofed into a girl slender of stature, petite of frame. With a quick flap of her wings, she rose to her feet and dashed toward the stranger.

You okay?

The girl barely sparred a second to hear what he had to say before rapidly firing her exclamations at him "Mister can control water?! That's so cool! Was Mister the one who brought the water in the sky?" Calming down, Kueria gave her wings a small flap as she folded them behind the arch of her back. Gazing up the now much taller male, she then continued in a much more relaxed pace yet still withholding the same enthusiasm.

"Thank you so much for saving Kueria!"

And the bird was a girl. Why wasn't he surprised?

With a wave of his hand, Qing dispelled the water from the small thing's frame. She'd find herself perfectly dry, everything restored to its normal state. Her clothes would be as if she'd never fallen into the lake, and her hair was perfect.

"Woah, woah, kid. Calm down. Yes, I did it. Yes, it's fine. Kueria, was it?"

Accustomed to literal centuries' worth of weird names, Qing pronounced Keuria's without hesitation. She looked tiny, and young, too. He wondered if she was a student at the Academy — he wouldn't know; Qing usually kept to his dorm kids, and his classrooms.

"Sit. It's evening — what are you doing here?"

Concerned for this small, petite little girl, Qing gestured towards the grass beside him.

"Kueria is... dry." She mumbled under her breath, more to herself than anyone else. Once she had thoroughly examined herself, she glanced back up, she said a quick "Thanks Mister! Kueria really appreciates it!"

She tilted her head ever so slightly as her cheeks naturally puffed out. "Yes! Kueria is Kueria! What is Mister's name?" she inquired as she scooted a little closer to the male, just enough to cover any awkward distance between them.

It's evening --what are you doing here

Sure enough, the girl glanced up to catch the setting sun slowly making it's decent on the faraway horizon. Not exactly sure how to explain herself, she remained silent for a few moments as she slowly took her seat. Crossing her legs, she idly rested her arms in front of her, her palms lightly gripping her calves. "Kueria was flying! She likes flying around here." Gaze shifting back to the Qing, her amethyst pupils gleamed with intent as she then enquired: "Why is mister here?"

Kid sounded like a toddler — most of the students were kids to Qing, but Kueria took the cake. Wasn't she also supposed to be one of his kids? How had he not seen her before? Qing would have to find some other time to catch the bird for an official chat — some other time that wasn't now, not when he was dealing with a potentially concussed girl, from the sound of it. So she was a student, unless there were somehow two Kuerias in the Academy, and he had met exactly zero of them.

Qing waved his hand good-naturedly, brushing away the thanks. "Zheng Qing," he returned, seeing no need to give his full name out. If she was one of his class's student, she'd know exactly who he was supposed to be — Jiang Lao Shi. If she wasn't, then she'd call him Zheng Qing. And if she was one of his kids, or part of the general student populace, then she'd likely be calling him Zheng Qing or Mr Jiang, too.

Kueria bridged the gap between them, but Qing didn't extend a hand. In fact, he didn't do anything at all, except to sit gracefully on the floor, legs crossed, watching the sunset. He took a while to be quiet, simply listening to the rush of river water, the burbling as it passed by and over pebbles, and the whistling of a thin breeze as it filtered through the trees.

The chick's voice broke through the silence. Qing fiddled idly with the grass as he listened to her explain herself, still staring straight ahead.

"Mister is here to..." he paused, the atmosphere making him slightly pensive. "Kid, I'm just here to watch the sunset."

Not exactly, but Qing wasn't lying. He leant back on his palms, watching as a flock of birds cut across the setting sun.

Zheng Qing

That name sounded oddly familiar, almost like she'd seen it written on some paper before... hold on a second... Kueria visibly froze for a few beats as she rummaged her mind to find out how she seemed to know that name. Tilting her head ever so slightly, she furrowed her eyebrows in a moment's contemplation. "Zheng Qing..." she whispered out, more for herself than anyone else. "Zheng... lao shi...?" Peering back up, she then repeated herself in a more audible volume "Zheng lao shi? Kueria's new dorm teacher... parent person?" The girl shifted in her seat as she continued. "Kueria was told she would have a dorm teacher in charge to take care of her! She was super excited to move in because living alone in the dorms was getting really lonely!"

Extending her legs, she leaned back and pressed her palms against the soft forest floor as she mimicked the teacher and gazed straight ahead to face the resplendent sunset. Usually, the girl couldn't seem to shut up. However, this time, she somehow couldn't find it within herself to break the delicate silence encapsulating them. Instead, she opted to remain just a little too quiet as she observed the other from the corner of her vision.

Kid, I'm just here to watch the sunset.

Perking up, she turned to face the male once again. "Teachers like to watch sunsets?" To be fair, this was the first teacher she had met up with after school hours and within the first few minutes, she had already drastically changed her impression of them. Perhaps they were not an entirely different species of emotionless responsible adults but were also individuals with their own personalities and depth to them.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Qing realised that a hundred years ago, he had sat in this exact location and it had looked exactly the same. He realised that in another hundred years, the sun would still rise above and set below these trees and this river, and it would outlive them all. Well -- not him, of course, but Kueria might be long dead, and almost all of his kids except for the immortal ones.

He refused to let the thought sober him. Not now, especially when one of his kids was seated right next to him, and the gentle motions of her breathing body still existed in this world. He cast a quick glance to his right; and true enough, there Kueria was, her frame shifting where she sat. "江老师," he reminded with a long-suffering, but kind, sigh.

Qing smiled, more for Kueria's sake than his own, but it didn't reach his eyes. He'd thought Kueria to be just another kid; now he knew that she was one of his. She was his to take care of. His to keep safe. "Yes," he said again, "Teachers like to watch sunsets."

"Teachers like to do a lot of things. What does Kueria like to do, kiddo?"

Now the girl was not used to such tranquil, almost serene silence. The very atmosphere itself was influencing her to feel more meditative than she'd been before. Perhaps this was the result of being in close contact with a mature adult. Her thoughts were oddly shrouded, as though fragments of her memory were scattered somewhere within the sea of mist. Slowly, she reminded herself. It'll all come back in due time.

Kueria was slightly caught off guard when the teacher replied her. Somehow, a part of her thought he would simply ignore her words as though they were a passing breeze but that wasn't the case. "江老师" she repeated, the words rolling off the tip of her tongue with some difficulty. She hoped she pronounced it right - language was never her forte and English itself was already hard enough. Kueria glanced at the sunset and back at the male before speaking. "sunsets are pretty! Kueria likes to watch them too!" A naive, blissful smile donned on her face as she continued in a slightly lower tone of voice. "The sunsets here are different from the ones at the seaside. All sunsets are so different." She paused as she wistfully gazed into the horizon once more. "Kueria can't remember much from when she wasn't a bird but she thinks the sunsets she used to see back in her own home were different too."

What does Kueria like to do, kiddo

Perking up, she eased herself back into her usual cheery demeanor as she chippered "Kueria likes singing! She heard her singing can make people happy! Kueria also recently discovered she loves ice cream and cooked food! Does Zheng lao shi like to do anything other than watch the sunset?"
