Ken did find her smile a bit off putting, considering her ordeal. He wasn't expecting her to burst into tears and rush into his arms or anything, but maybe just a little less cheer. Then again maybe this was her strong face. Her clan's heritage spoke to that even more to him. She seemed to take pride in that heritage. She had some strong blood running through her veins. He was very much familiar with the story. And they were mineral dragons, and in comparison their history seemed more exciting. Perhaps it was just because he was so used to his own family stories.
"Well my family kind of came to power through financial smarts and then our grandfather, Xerxes outright conquered and went to war with various factions. We kind of expanded rather aggressively. But since then we've gone back to more peaceful methods. The old days of forcible conquest is over."
He wondered how she would take that bit of information. It was a major part of their history and their grandfather had since effectively retired to watch over his family's growth without taking a hold of the wheel. His cousin would probably be the better person to talk to in terms of any sort of alliances though since he was the boss here on the island.
His attention focused more on Xia as she mentioned a request. She seemed a bit embarrassed to spit it out. Then she finally asked him in Mandarin. He took a step back and sized her up. Then he laughed before responding to her in Mandarin.
"Sorry, you reminded me of how I was when I was a kid. I'm a lightning elemental with weak kinetic control over my powers. The most I can do is generate it close range and breathe it in my dragon form. And compared to other family members I'm kinda scrawny and short. So I learned how to channel my electricity through spell casting."
He smiled and looked away for a moment before actually answering her question in English, "You can learn to fight without a doubt. Most of my family could help you in that department. I guess this attack made you feel weak, but the way I see it you're strong and you just don't know it yet."
