Selkiris nodded softly. “Yes that is correct. Through much practice Bether discovered that a physical conduit to channel magic was unnecessary. The human mind is capable of channeling the flow of the magic itself if it is trained, though there is a few other factors that are discussed in later chapters. Your magic is a part of you, just like your arms and legs are. If you focus enough your mind can use the magic just like any limb of your body.”

When bringing up willpower Selkiris gave a soft chuckle and dug through his bag, pulling out a small hay doll. “Willpower is one of those factors I was talking about before. Willpower determines the strength of a spell if you use your mind to channel it. Your determination to use a spell affects how much magic is used as it is cast. For example, say you wanted to pierce this small doll, if you didn’t really care if it actually pierced the doll or not....” A small portal opened next to Selkiris and a tiny needle like mass shot out of the portal, barely scratching the doll’s surface. “Now say you wanted to pierce through the doll more than anything, like it was your life goal to do it.” Selkiris changed how he held the doll as the needle like mass retracted back into the portal. Suddenly a large spear shot out instead, cleaving the doll in two, and nicking a bit of Selkiris’s finger in the process. “Oops....well you get the idea.” Selkiris dug out a bandage from his back and placed it over his finger. After that he would get to work cleaning up and blood droplets or stray hay fibers on the desk.

Selkiris was rather busy cleaning so he didn’t quite hear Lottie at first, just luckily heard her once she asked a follow up question for him. “Willpower certainly can be seen as an extension to focus. They certainly both entwine with one another in many cases but aren’t completely one in the same. There a few cases where willpower can cause immensely powerful spells and the user isn’t actually focused on it and vice versa. Though those examples are few and far between. Typically they are very closely paired with one another, and the caster of the spell needs to focus even more than usual to compensate for the lack of a conduit assisting them. Does that make any sense?”

Selkiris had only recently remembered they had no formal training in teaching before this. Even when he was with the Arch-mages he wasn’t one of those that taught. He acted more as a supervisor for practices and the like.
