Extensive experimentation is the key to true knowledge. In the age of philosophers, wise men spoke and spoke, but without action, their words could only ever serve as a foundation upon which greater things were realized. In the modern era, well-structured tests and replicable results were what mattered. Both participants and testers needed to be unaware of the circumstances, and the participants should be selected as randomly as possible. That being said, Rei did not have the reach nor assets of a large pharmaceutical or the government, at least one of these restrictions would have to be thrown out the window.

She had posted a brief advertisement for volunteers in various places around campus requesting that people of all aptitude's take part in her magical research. The premise was simple; the experiment would test whether or not an individual's personal ability aptitude altered their ability to use her spell books. She had prepared a wide variety of spells to ensure that each candidate could be paired off with some imagined magic that did not relate to them at all. Still, given the lack of response she had received, it seemed dubious that she would get to use most of them. After all, a student with no financial backing had very little to offer in the way of incentive. Rei was essentially relying on the curiosity of those who possessed particularly specific abilities.

In any case, she had at least thought to pick a time late enough that many people would be out of classes. However, the occasional chilly breeze was beginning to persuade her that it wasn't such a great idea. Waiting around is pretty bothersome... Maybe I should just make a new spell in the meantime. Something silly to keep myself distracted. "Hm..." At least the lake was quite nice to gaze at. Maybe a super high resolution photo spell was called for. That would certainly sell, even if it was a bit specific. After all, the goal here was to get rich, because instant food was starting to get old.

Sighing longingly, she skipped through the forest happily as she wanted to make her way to the lake. She always had a thing for bodies of water, but she could never figure out what exactly it was. Maybe t was the act that everything needed it to live, or that fact that it took on so many different sizes. There may have just been too many reasons why she liked it for her to choose just one. Blinking a bit, she stopped skipping as the lake was now in her view. It was huge, and beautiful, even though she still wasn't that close to it. Looking around cautiously, she scanned to see if there were any unwanted guests around her, to watch her go to the lake. Sighing, she started to once again move forward to the direction of the lake. A few seconds passed before she was now only a few meters away from it. Taking a deep breath in, she decided that she wanted some complain. Clearing her throat with a few loud coughs, she started. "I Orlena, beckon Gia to my side!" A few seconds passed, before she raised her hands to the sky in a cup form, as a white figure dropped down from the sky. Now in her hands, was her spirit Gia. Setting her down on the ground, she sighed lightly and smiled at another successful summon.

There doesn't seem to be anyone coming... Rei sighed to herself lightly as twiddled her fingers atop her suitcase. Even if it was a waste of time, she had resigned herself to staying at the lake for the duration of the study. After all, if by some chance a willing participant showed up, she wouldn't want to disappoint with her absence. Contemplating the pond, the young lady soon noticed the arrival of another, standing near the edge of the water on the other side. There wasn't really anyone else around at this time, especially since it was getting to be on the nippy side, so perhaps this person had seen her flier? Maybe?

All of a sudden, Rei noticed that a smaller figure had appeared beside the figure on the other side. She squinted her eyes, but to no avail. "Blast, I hadn't thought to pack a binocular spell because those are so uninteresting." Picking up her suitcase, Rei began to walk briskly along the perimeter of the pond, but a safe distance away from the water. As she approached not-quite-having-to-shout distance, she shouted, "Excuse me, miss, but are you here for the study?" While waving towards what was now visibly a younger girl, Rei's briefcase popped open, spilling the small pocket journals within onto the grass and dirt before her. Embarrassed, the young researcher wannabe began to scramble and pick them up.

Looking around, she sighed as she slowly looked down at Gia. She was her favorite spirit, as most of the time, she help her to make big decisions. There is someone else here, lady Orlena." Gia said as she walked over to her left, to indicate that the person was in that direction. "Thanks Gia." She said to her quietly. Looking over in that direction, there was someone coming towards her, and it seemed that it was important, or that she was excited, she wasn't sure which. Deciding to pretend that she hadn't seen her, to see what the person wanted, she looked into the water. A few seconds later, the person had talked to her. "The study?" She said as she turned to face the person. "I am only out here for-" she started before she saw the person's papers and files scatter around. "Oh! Let me help!" She said as she helped pick up the loose things.

With a face that would have been flushed red if not for her lack of ability to blush, Rei scrambled to retrieve the journals. Luckily, they weren't quite close enough to the water that the ground was muddy, but still! The other girl didn't seem to mind helping out, and within a short amount of time, all of the small journals were once again locked up inside Rei's soon-to-be-replaced suitcase. She brushed herself off slightly, although considering the ragged hoodie she was wearing it was mainly a symbolic gesture.

"Ah, thanks for helping out." She scratched the back of her head sheepishly. "I was so ecstatic because I thought someone had finally showed up to help out with my study, I suppose I got a bit too worked up..." Rei gave the other girl a quick appraisal. Somehow...it doesn't seem like she's here to help. I think I'll avoid asking about that fox for now too...

In any case, she had troubled the young girl enough. Feeling kind of awkward about just running up to someone like that, Rei cleared her throat somewhat nervously. "Sorry to have bothered you, in any case. Since it doesn't seem like anyone else is showing up, why don't I offer you something from my stock, since you helped me out?" She gingerly opened up the suitcase and retrieved one of the small journals. "It seems I've got a few of these to spare."

Normally Aurora did not take too much stock in rumors that went around the school, as there was usually not much in the way of verification. Her abilities for example were well known by the students in said rumors; but other than that, nobody could actually pin down what she did. This was the basis for a lot of information in Starlight; lots of stories, few facts.

In addition, Aurora also didn't take much stock in clubs or activities that students put on. Most were harmless enough, or occasionally involved some scrapes and scuffles.

However, a notice that had been posted up did catch Aurora by surprise.

"Must be willing to risk injury."

The time of this 'study' the student was putting on was also somewhat suspect. A four hour time frame to study one-off powers out near the lake; a location that had frankly been the site of various problems over the last year.

That wasn't to say that Rei was being malicious at all...but it was still something to check out. Both as a mage, and as a Chronologist. Aurora was wondering what these one-shot spells and what not actually were, and if some student was writing things they probably shouldn't be.

Every student did...but most were subtle with it at the very least.

Aurora was at the lake five, maybe ten minutes late after having finished a later dinner than usual. She was dressed in heavy robes, and every accessory that she normally wore while teaching class. With any luck, this student wouldn't recognize her as a professor, much less a director, but instead as a student...although in all honesty it didn't matter too much.

"I hear there was a study on one-shot abilities taking place here...or is that somewhere else?"

Smiling brightly at the girl as she helped her pick up her papers, it felt a bit weird that she hadn't heard of what she had been playing to do on this night. Had it been secretive? Or was it something that everyone had been welcome to check. As they finished with the papers, Orlena smiled again as the girl thanked her for the help. "My pleasure miss." Straightenig her legs to stand up straight, she listened to the girl once again as she talked. She wasn't sure exactly what to say to her, as she still wasn't sure as to whar her flyer had said, or what it had been okay. She nodded her head in a yes motion, to signify that she would be up to do whatever she needed. Looking behind the girl, it seemed that someone else had join them. She decided not to talk, as the girl asked about the flyer.

Awawawawa...there's suddenly some interest! It seemed that both women had at least a modicum of curiosity in her work. At least the late arrival had mentioned the fliers. But...even so, only two people showed up, and I've been waiting here a while. Maybe I should try some different form of advertisement next time...

Rei let those thoughts be banished from her head for the time being. Failures aside, there were some willing(?) samples here ripe for the plucking. She had been willing to just give up one of her books to the helpful girl, but now she may as well do things properly. Wait, I'm getting ahead of myself. Better explain things first.

"*ahem* Well, this is the place of the study alright, although as you can see, there's really no one around. I should've made better fliers...I digress!" It was oh so easy to get off topic sometimes. "As you both probably know, the people that come here exercise varying degrees of control over their abilities. My power," she said, flourishing her small journal, "is to write within books and make them mini-grimoires of sorts. Observe!"

Rei flipped open the journal and looked at the spell she had written in this one.

Finagle

This spell will allow the user to be able to insert USB connectors properly on the user's first attempt for a duration of 30 seconds.

She shut the book hurriedly. I must've been in some kinda mood when I wrote that one... "Uh, this one isn't really a good demonstration. Besides, the point is that I wanted to see whether a person's influence over their own ability determines their influence over an instance of mine, by having them try out a few books I've prepared." She rapped her suitcase. "It's a bit vain to conduct a study based on my own ability, but research like this could have interesting applications depending on the results." Applications in the field of revenue generation, that is.

Despite the clear start time of 7PM, it appears that the student that was lacking in subjects for their study; a whole two people had showed up, and it was entirely possible the other lady that was here wasn't even part of the study. Aurora had gotten lucky. If something was to go wrong with this study, at least the damage wouldn't be particularly severe.

Frankly, Aurora was actually a little bit curious at what the student had dreamed up.

The mage nodded at Rei's understanding of the school; it was indeed filled with people of varying skills and degrees of understanding of those skills. Aurora's own understanding was extremely advanced, but Rei's ability in particular was a bit different than everyone else's.

"Fascinating. Does that include any type of magic?"

If it did, it would pose a rather powerful danger to the school. Once again, not necessarily a malicious danger; Aurora herself would be lumped in with Rei to be honest.

"Is that so? Can I see one or two of your books? I'd like to try them out."

That was an understatement. If the grimoires actually worked, they would represent the presence of a new artifact that the Chronologists could take advantage of. Or at the very least, and more likely of the options; store away and display as something of a museum piece. First, these books had to not blow away either of the two subjects there.

"What sort of applications are you looking at?"

Batting her eyes, Orlena was a bit confused, as she seemed to be the only one that had no idea what was happening. She was only picking up bit and pieces of what the other girl wanted to have happen. crouching down, it seemed hat Gia wanted on her shoulder. Picking her up, she placed her on er left shoulder as she took a few more steps towards them, The other women that had joined them seemed to be quite interested in the subject, as where Orlena had only stumbled here by accident. Giving the two girls time to ramble on the subject, she looked back at the lake, smiling at it. She decided that she would stay, even though she had no knowledge, or at least not a whole lot, on what the younger looking girl was talking about. She would stay though, as she had mentioned something about experiments, which would be interesting to try or at least look at.
