Private Making Things Right

After heading to a water fountain to fill up a water bottle, Rem was heading back to his room. He was about to work on math homework, or at least he thought he was.

He heard his name called by a voice he didn’t recognize at first. When he turned his head to see who it was, he spotted Katie. Someone he wasn’t really in the mood to talk with at the moment. The last time he saw her, they had somewhat of a disagreement thanks to that demonic girlfriend of her’s. He felt bad about it, but at the same time he really didn’t feel like dealing with it now.

“Hey...” He floated over to her. “What can I help you with?”

The angel was a little surprised when Katie apologized. He felt he deserved it but based on their last meeting he really didn’t expect that from her. He wondered if perhaps that demon had done something to prove that he was right and now she was apologizing for failing to heed his warning.

“It’s fine... I forgive you.” He looked to the side. “Demons are exceptional at getting into people’s heads and in a world like this I really can’t blame you for being so confused. What matters now is that you’ve seen their true nature and can go on living safely from now on.” He looked back to her with a warm and hopeful expression.

Rem looked a little confused for a moment before explaining. “It isn’t your place to apologize for the demon’s wrongdoings. Demons are demons, evil is just what’s natural for them and so that’s what they do. There’s no sense in being sorry when it wasn’t your fault.”

It was clear to him that Katie was pretty uneducated when it came to the monsters. That was expected though, in this world it seemed everyone was like that. Hopefully one day he could fix that on a larger scale but for now he had to focus on the little picture.

Oh no. Rem was beginning to realize how poorly he’d read the situation. Perhaps he was hearing what he wanted to hear rather than what was actually being said.

He didn’t respond to what Katie said about Vespa. He didn’t believe it, not one bit, but he’d already stated that. There was no point in repeating himself.

The question about demons, on the other hand... “Yes, I do.” He knew the answer to that and he kept it blunt. “Demons work on a basis of achieving their sinful goals. Sometimes to meet that agenda they will do good things, gaining the trust of specific people to help hide their true nature and get closer to targets. But in the end they are all evil. They are created broken Katie. There’s nothing you can do to fix them.”

“The good in demons is false and those are very good reasons not to try. Vespa is only going to hurt you. If you continue down this path.” He sighed. “If you want something bad enough and you squint hard then you’ll think you’ve found it eventually but I assure you there is no good in Vespa or any other demon on the island for that matter.”

He narrowed his eyes. “The reason you get it is because deep down your mind and soul are telling you it is the truth. This way that you and the rest of this island carry on is completely unnatural.”
