Kal sighed as she stared at her reflection in the bathroom. Today was the day. She was going to try to play nice and make friends with a few of her clubmates.

Most of them shirked away from her due to her sheer professionalism. They used to ask if she wanted to spend time with the group, after many many nos, they'd given up. Kal didn't blame them. Her loneliness was her fault.

After splashing some water on her face and calming herself down, Kal left the powder room and called to Tomomi, one of the clubs dancing members. She caught up with the other women.

"Hey," she said with an awkward sort of smile. "What are you up to tonight? I mean, uh, er, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind spending time together. Not like a date! Just.... a friendly thing."

Tomomi had enjoyed the first club meeting quite a lot. All the club members seemed cool and the activities fun. And Tomomi would get to play her violin as much as she wanted!
Tomomi was on her way out when someone called put to her. It was Kal, the arachne who was the club leader. She seemed so proper and professional it was kinda stiff for Tomomi. But she stopped and grinned at her.
"Wassup?"
Apparently Kal wanted to hang out. And was being real awkward about it. Tomomi laughed and pat Kal's shoulder, grinning.
"I got a girlfriend so I would've said no to a date. But a friendly thing? Count me the hell in! Did ya have somethin' in mind boss?"

Wassup sounded like something her brother, Koda, would have said. That didn't put Kal at ease any, but it did make her smile a little less awkward. But that smile warped right back into awkwardness when Tomomi mentioned a girlfriend.

Had Kal chosen the right person to attempt this with? Tomomi was so open and Kal was not. But maybe that was a good thing. A little ying and yang never hurt anybody.

Now, what did Kal have in mind? To Kal fun was practicing her instrument. Fun was playing a game of chess or sitting down for a good book. None of those things sounded like group activities, though.

She tried to remember the things Koda or Remi had taught her about making friends. "I was thinking..." she began slowly, trying to read Tomomi so she could pick the right activity for them, "maybe something active? You seem like the active type."

Tomomi could feel the awkwardness basically radiating from Kal and it almost made her laugh. Had she been forced to talk to Tomomi or something? Had she looked so lonely that she needed a babysitter, a fwiend? Tomomi grinned when Kal passed the activity choosing to her. Active type? Well obviously, since Tomomi was wearing bright pink yoga pants and a t-shirt that read "Let's hustle!". It was actually her lazy day wear.
"Active, huh? Well, I dunno. Wanna run the marathon? Or go to the gym, maybe? Boy, I do love a good torture to my body, yes indeedio!"
Tomomi said with friendly sarcasm and laughed. She wanted to shake Kal a bit, make her lighten up.
"But in all seriousness, nah. I don't feel like bein' active. Don' let my outside fool ya, inside I'm a lazy fatass cat. Oh, I know!"
Tomomi patted the violin case that was strapped on her back.
"Wanna jam? I know ya play the violin too."

The idea of running a marathon made Kal physically ill, and it probably showed on her face even if she was willing to nod and put up with the torture. She visibly relaxed when Tomomi admitted she was just a lazy cat.

Kal was pleasantly surprised when Tomomi suggested the two of them try 'jamming' together with their violins. Kealani had never actually played an instrument with someone in the name of fun, that was to say, outside of practice.

The thought was exciting... and a little nervewracking. She could play without being uptight, right?

"Sure!" Kal reigned in her excitement and lofted her violin case some. "You just want to stay here, then, or go to the park?"

Tomomi actually laughed when Kal obviously looked like she'd puke at the thought of running a marathon and nodded anyway. Man, how determined was she to spend time with Tomo?
"Don't worry, we're not seriously runnin' a marathon, although I could pretty easily."

Kal relaxed right up when Tomo suggested they jammed and Tomomi was glad she had hit the jackpot. I mean, if someone didn't love playing their instrument they wouldn't be in this kinda club for long, right? Much less be the boss of it.
"Let's start here, I wanna know if ya can keep up with me."
Tomo winked teasingly at Kal and pulled her violin case into her hands.

Kal grinned competitively at Tomomi's little jest. Kal's entire life revolved around her violin. It was practically unhealthy, and while her family was proud of her, she knew they worried about her lack of a social life that didn't revolve around her club.

She set up her violin and plugged it into the amp they had there, testing a few of the strings. Jamming, right. Kal didn't know exactly what that meant. Making things up on the spot, she supposed. Different than straight up practicing. It was about creativity and feeling.

Kealani was a planner everywhere in life but with her music. When she played, she was a different person. There was no stiffness in the way she moved or danced. Her eyes closed and she took to her instrument like a fish to water.

The melody she began was somewhat soft, but the tempo picked up quickly enough. It was an electric type of music. Fast and chaotic, with a pattern that was hard to discern, although it was very present.

Tomomi grinned back at Kal and took out her own violin as Kal set up her own. Tomo's violin was a traditional one, no electronics, and she set it under her chin. After some tuning and testing Tomo was just waiting for Kal to start playing. Tomo was a casual kind of player, she didn't plan much when it came to violin. She went with her gut, and when Kal started playing Her gut began churning.

Kal was an excellent violinist, and Tomo's head began to spin. The melody was a chaos, so very different from Kal herself, and Tomo really loved that. There were many places where she could've jumped in but Tomo wanted to listen to Kal's playing for a second. But when she did start playing Tomo didn't just follow along to Kal's playing.

Tomo liked to rebel, to go against what people normally thought was best. So she set a contrast for Kal's music. Tomo played slowly, with a determined and overwhelming tempo that normally would've buried other sounds. But Tomo blended it into Kal's playing, sneakily like a cat sneaking towards a prey. Even the smile on her face was an almost predatory smirk as she concentrated on playing.

If Kal hadn't been so focused on playing she might have worried that she'd done something wrong and that was why Tomomi hadn't jumped in sooner. But Kealani was lost to the music.

When Tomomi did sneak into the song, Kal didn't realize at first. She heard the lower, slower tempo and it fit well with what she was doing. Without realizing it, Kal was grinning.

Kal made a concentrated effort to ensure their melody stayed well put together. The music they created inspired chaos, dread, and terror. Kal had never made a song like that before.

When they'd both finally slowed to a stop, Kal felt exhilarated. She beamed at Tomomi trying to find the words to express the fluttering in her heart.

"Holy shit!" She wasn't big on cursing, but it didn't feel like there was anything else to say that could encompass what they'd just created together.

The music they created almost stole Tomo's breath away and she was so concentrated on keeping up and playing like her life depended on it Tomo didn't notice that both she and Kal were grinning like madmen. It fit the melody they were weaving very well, and if an outsider would've seen them now they would've probably been scared out of their wits.

Finally, after felt like an eternity, they came to a stop and Tomo slowly lowered her violin. She looked at Kal and beamed right back at her. Kal looked so much more natural after a jam session, and Tomo wanted to poke at her for it. But she didn't want to scare this rare creature away so she didn't.

When Kal cursed at Tomo she started cackling like crazy. It felt so weird yet so right to hear those words right now. Because holy shit, that had been awesome.
"Holy shit is right! That felt just so...like...holy shit!"
Tomo laughed and grinned at Kal.
"I think I really like ya boss. Now lemme start the next one, wouldya?"
Tomo lifted the violin back under her chin and drew one long, slow note from the strings. But right after a break that felt like forever she started playing a chipper, bouncy melody that jumped from place to place like a grasshopper and dove down in surprising places only to rise again like a bird. Tomo grinned at Kal, challenging her to keep up.
