Angelo was giving him a long, hard look. He'd... sort of got it. Sort of. He'd missed the greater point, and completely missed the ideal solution, but he'd at least kinda understood.

"Again, we go back to the whole 'what do you want' out of this. Do you only care about how people will react to you? Because if so, just don't use ones that look human. Or do you actually care about how people feel? Because there's a bunch of easy solutions to this. You don't need an undead army."

Because, you know, the cops existed. Angelo was right there and all, and he was far from the most powerful person at Manta Carlos's disposal.

Get rid of the horde? The thought was unthinkable to Charlie. It would be like cutting off a hand. They were an extension of him and, after all, and its not like they did any harm. There were undead there that had been with him for over a thousand years, repair after repair, battle after battle. Like a child would collect and treasure pretty stones, Charlie treasured his horde.

"Outside of my personal life, I will only use them to protect this island, and it's people." Said Charlie, hoping this would not infuriate Angelo further, before, more softly saying "And, well, it's... its... my horde. It's like you giving up your badge, or well it is to me. It's a part of me. I've put hours and days and sometimes even years into each member. I know each of them like a parent would know their children. I'll minimise peoples exposure to them... but they're like my family."

"No, Charlie," Angelo said, his voice firm. "It's not like giving up my badge. My badge isn't the dead body of a living human being, who was killed, and whose body is now trapped with you forever in eternal slavery. The only thing that keeps me from being one of those is that I met you after you decided maybe humanity shouldn't be wiped out. And you can bet that every human or person who used to be human is thinking about that exact thing when you march out an army of dead bodies."

To say he was passionate about it was vastly understating it. "They're not your family, Charlie, and describing them like that is disgusting. You don't know them. They were people, and then you killed them and trapped their bodies in eternal slavery and marched them around."

Angelo was asking Charlie to give up his horde. And do what? The concept of giving up his horde was so alien to Charlie that it was like asking someone to cut off their own finger. Charlie had always thought of the horde as an extension of himself, and extension he would never give up. Each little group were memories, of the ottoman empire, of ancient rome, of wars won and wars lost, no matter what. They were concrete things Charlie could cling onto. Sure he treated them idly, but Charlie had spent days repairing the templars savaged by the chimera. Memories of constantinople.

"I'm sorry Angelo," said Charlie, still gripping the mug, as tiny black sparks flicked between his fingertips "but i'll never give up my horde. Them and my books are the most precious things I own. If it helps, if you take me out, the horde would deanimate. Can we try with something else i could change?"

At the very least, Angelo supposed, Charlie was being honest with him. He wasn't trying to claim they'd somehow agreed to becoming part of the horde, or that he hadn't killed any of them, or they he totally would get rid of them and then not.

So that was something.

"Try and be more understanding of others. Try and put yourself in their shoes. That's your biggest problem by a mile. You don't think about how people will react, so you just say things. Don't. Don't just say things. Stop and think and say to yourself 'how would a normal human react to this?'. Like when you confessed to the whole mass murder thing. You didn't just confess to me, you confessed to everyone. There's like a half dozen people who know that, which means it'll likely spread unless all of them choose to keep it to themselves."

"Yeah, that... has been mentioned as an issue, that I speak without thinking, so I will try to temper that. I tend to be a little... dismissive of other's feelings. Which is an issue i need to address."

Charlie thought back. The appearance of Jason Chang, and everything that surrounded that event had... not been his finest moment. Threatening Jason, admitting planning omnicide... well, it was another black mark on people's opinion of him.

"As far as I know, that piece of information hasn't cropped up much, which is lucky. But hopefully, with real behavioiral change, people will, well not forget about it, but put it to the back of their mind. But still, i need to think before I say things like that. The correct thing, in hindsight, would probably have kept quiet until i was calmer, and then made a decision about what to do."

Angelo wasn't quite sure what to say to that. Charlie did seem to be willing to think things through, but only time was going to tell if he was actually capable of following through. Angelo had mostly come down on the side of ignorance, rather than malice being Charlie's issue, for whatever that was worth.

Angelo still wasn't going to get rid of his gun.

"Right," Angelo said, confirming Charlie's theory. "Removing yourself from the situation while stressed is always going to be better than throwing your fears and worries in everyone's faces."

To say the least.

Maybe their tension had been obvious, because no one had stopped by to take a drink order, so Angelo took a moment to flag someone down, who hurried over right away.

"Just a water for me," Angelo said, making a mental note to leave a big tip.

"I'm fine, thank you" responded Charlie, as the waiter asked him. Charlie had already eaten and paid for his meal, a lovely grilled branzini, before Angelo had arrived. This restaurant was definitely going on his 'possible places to go for meals' list. Angelo definitely had a good taste in meeting places, if food was any factor to judge by.

"Thank you for your time Angelo. I know meeting me here wasn't... high on your priority list, but i think it's really helped. It's given me something concrete to focus on. Hopefully in the future, with some hard work, things can be better. Thank you."

Charlie extended his hand for a handshake, with a friendly smile on his face. Hopefully this would... improve things, both with his own attitude, and Angelo's perception of him, although that would only come with real behavioural change.

Maybe it had helped, but Angelo didn't quite believe it. He'd have to wait and see. When Charlie offered his hand, Angelo took it out of sheer instinct, but the feeling of skeletal fingers under the illusion of a hand was not a comforting one.

Things had improved though, however, even if they might not have improved as much as Charlie wanted. Angelo had mentally slid Charlie into the 'wait and see' category, rather than the 'shoot after only the most cursory of checks' category.

Angelo did stay and eat, but he had a hard time focusing on the food after Charlie left.
