"Oh my lords, no, no, no, nooo..." Bel cried out, panicking now as she threw back the blankets on her bed, ran her hands along the sheets, top of the mattress, under her pillow.

She had already rifled through her drawers, her purse, bookbag, checked her closet, shoes, opened books and shook them hard, tossing them back on the shelf irritated, letting them fall in a thump to the floor if she had missed.

"I cannot, cannot have lost it... Not again!" she wailed as she lifted up the mattress, held it high, and then balanced it on her head as she scanned the mattress base frantically.

"Bloody amulet, Hades and Hell," she swore under her breath as she dropped the mattress down with a loud thud, and then got down on her hands and knees and looked under the bed, reaching underneath as far as her arm would go, patting the floor to see if it was there.

"Why me? Why?" she groaned out in frustration as she picked up some clothes that she had thrown on the floor, checking pockets once again, feeling seams, fingers moving along the fabric.

"Do you hate me that much, Goddess?!" she asked the room loudly, then listened quietly for a moment, waiting for a reply she knew would never come.

"Honestly, lady, this is not funny..." she sighed, knowing that she was overreacting, but at the same time she couldn't help it. She was almost at her lowest divinity-wise and her abilities were waning daily. This just added to Bel's sour mood.

"That bloody amulet, I swear it has a life of its own," she muttered angrily as she threw the clothes back on the floor in frustration and looked around the room trying to think where an amulet might disappear to or be hiding. Where her amulet, the pale bluish silver moonstone amulet, the Goddess Beltaine had given her, might be? Where she could have placed it?

The stone was connected to her powers and every year as Samhain slowly approached, the amulet started disappearing mysteriously from where she had originally placed it and it annoyed to no end and left her feeling panicked.

Jeremiah practically floated down the hallway, for all intents and purposes without a care in the world. He was falling into this new routine, this new way of living. It was so far removed from either of the lives he had lived before: back on the farm with his das or in the halls of the Dark Elves with his father. But it had its own charm, its own softness and edge that made it enjoyable.

His head turned to a sound that he was fairly familiar with. One that made his heart stop briefly. Someone cursing. Angry, or maybe upset? And tossing things around. Despite his concerns, his wariness for helping strangers, he knew Da and Pa would want him to. Taking a breath to steel himself, he let a dreamy smile fall across his face as he knocked gently but loudly on the door.

He hoped that the other person was alright.

"What?!" Bel said sharply, irritated at everything still as she whirled around to see who it was. Seeing it was another student, a male student at that, and that he looked rather concerned, fuelled her frustration and made her defensive. She knew she had been acting like a mad woman, she just hadn't thought anyone would know, and it embarrassed her to know somebody had seen her like this.

"What?" she snapped at the boy again, "What do you want?" she asked, though this time not as harshly, realising her tone and cursing herself silently for snapping at him. It wasn't his fault she couldn't find her amulet she reminded herself.

Jeremiah flinched a bit when the girl snapped at him. He took a step back and looked around uncertainly. His accent became thicker and his voice was stilted as he had to actively think about translating his thoughts from German to English.

"I... heard you in distress. And my Das always told me I should try to help others... so I thought I would make sure that you are okay."

"In distress? I am not in distress, Why did you ever think that?" Bel said narrowing her eyes, slightly confused at his words, and not quite understanding what he meant. "I am fine, just bloody well ticked off," she admitted in a frustrated tone as she eyed the young man openly.

"You were... yelling... and making a lot of noise. I simply thought, you know. You might require assistance and..."

Jeremiah trailed off, looking sheepishly at the ground. He wasn't used to being yelled at like this. He wouldn't cry, there was no need. But he wasn't sure what to do.

"I was yelling because I am bloody angry... " Bel said advancing on the boy, kicking her clothes angrily out of the way. "It fucked off like it does every freaking year at this time of year." she informed him.

"Like clockwork too, I put it away safely, in a safe place, and poof!" Gone!" she said waving her hands for effect.

Jeremiah flinched again and frowned a bit harder than before. He would have gotten smacked on the hand for acting this way when he was a child. And this young woman was, well, not a child.

"Listen here," he said with more confidence than he actually had. "You are upset. I understand this. And I feel for your pain and loss. But you cannot act this way. I would like to help you, if I am able. But I cannot do that if you throw a tantrum like a small child."

"Did you just call me a child?" Bel asked coolly as she regarded the young man in front of her. He was about her same height, dark-haired and slender, probably about her same age too. He was also amazingly pure, something she hadn't noticed before when she first saw him, and this only added to her sense of frustration and embarrassment.

Months ago she'd have seen that right away, seen his true worth, but unfortunately, her abilities were slipping away quickly, and this caused an irrational sense of fear and panic that she took out on everyone around her.

"Fine..." she relented uneasily holding up her hands apologetically, "I am sorry by the way," she told him with a resigned sigh, adding a tired. "I hate Samhain."

"You hate Samhain?" Jeremiah said with a degree of incredulousness. He couldn't understand it. He was, in fact, looking forward to Samhain to honor his Das.

"Nevermind that," he continued with a shake of his head. "I will help you find the thing you have lost. I understand loss very well; it is not pleasant for anyone."

Another pause and a genuine, cheery smile. "May I come in?"
