Ava's stomach and heart both ached, when she imagined that Isstar had been carrying and hiding this ever since he first woke up. How could Isstar still be, well, how he was despite the fact that the first thing he ever knew was that he was going to die? It kinda explained some things about his character but even still Isstar should've been lot gloomier.
Ava tended to try and live every day like it was her last, the shortness of life and dangers behind every corner had been pounded into her skull when she'd grown up in the wilderness. But for Isstar it was almost literal.
Fuck, Isstar was so fucking strong that Ava felt almost pathetic in comparison. Almost.

"Don't get smart with me, you know what I fucking mean!"
Ava retorted with a huff at Isstar's deadpan answer. Shit, she'd forgotten how this guy took things way too literally, even if he seemed to do it less now. But it was a really huge fucking relief that Isstar wasn't ready to kick the bucket yet, and it showed it how tension left Ava's shoulders as Isstar spoke.
"That's the dork I know!"
Ava said and grinned again, though it was still a rigid one and Ava was still feeling volatile.
"We're gonna fucking find a way, there's no way you're leaving this world before me on my watch!"

Isstar himself huffed as he crossed his arms. “I don’t need to get smart with you. I just am.” The smuggest grin appeared on his face along with a slight incline of his head. A brief surprise flitted in his mind at the realisation he felt relief at Ava calming down. With a sigh, Isstar scratched at his cheek. He really had started to care about other people more than purely himself...

Although he promised he would try to find a way to live, it was something that Isstar constantly thought about the logistics. There were some options, but held a high level of risk, not to mention costed. Although being a Rukt’In gave him the privilege of the family’s wealth, he had a stubbornness about using it for that. Isstar was barely a Rukt’In, and he would not use their riches for himself to survive.
Still, he was limited on known options...

He tried to smile casually though, to be more calm and cheerful. For his own sake if not for Ava’s. “I don’t understand what warranted me being called a dork by such a hothead...” Isstar grumbled while he looked away from Ava, the hint of a pout on his lips. He noticed the slight tension Ava had still, and motioned over to the fire. “Maybe we should sit back down? Would be a shame if we came out here and the meat became charcoal because you were busy destroying poor trees.” Isstar shook his head in a gesture of ‘what can you do’.

After a moment of silence, Isstar inhaled. “And, Ava... Thanks. I have every intention of finding a way around this, but, I never really thought someone would be... is concerned the term? I never thought someone would be concerned about it.” Aside from the brief frown that crossed his face, Isstar had a sincere expression upon his. It could even be passed as embarrassed as he avoided looking the redhead in the eye.

"I could always just call you grump, it suits you and is more accurate, too."
Ava said with a teasing smirk, her mood was lifting a bit though there was still a horrible feeling in her gut. Ava had a feeling it wasn't going away anytime soon, either. But of course it wouldn't, Ava's friend was going to die, even if it wasn't going to be permanently.
"That tree had it coming, it was close to me..."
Ava grumbled but walked back over to the fire anyway. She didn't sit down yet though, she felt way too antsy to sit down. Instead she took off her shoe and sock and used her foot to rearrange the fire again.

It was weird to see Isstar be so sincere and...emotional. Ava had though she and Isstar were similar with not being really good with emotional stuff. Yes, Ava was a lot more emotional than Isstar, but that didn't mean she was good at handling it. Hell, Ava got angry when most people got sad. But when she looked at Isstar's sincere expression and took in his words Ava's expression relaxed and she nodded a bit.
"If you thought that then you really are a dork. You're my friend, obviously I'd be concerned..."
Ava's voice got softer towards the end and so did her expression, and she blushed a bit and cleared her throat. Enough with the overly mushy stuff!
"Next time don't just assume and rely on me! And on all the other people that will obviously be concerned too. I'm not the only one here with a huge family, dork."
Because even if Isstar thought he wasn't a Rukt'In Ava knew that at least Liun and Eein considered him to be family.

With a blink then a pout, Isstar grumbled at Ava's suggestion. "Grump? How am I grump..." He looked away from her and inadvertently proved his friend's point. Isstar immediately realised this, making the dragon groan in despair. "That proves nothing." Isstar shot Ava a small glare as he walked back over to the fire.
"The tree had it coming? I thought you were all about nature." He tilted his head, but the smirk on his face implied he was teasing. Sometimes his nature as being a blunt and crass individual did shine through, but Isstar was a lot better at socialising than he used to be. Isstar stood next to Ava when he noted she wasn't sitting down, his hand slipped into his pocket while his other arm hung limp at his side.

"You see me as a friend, huh?" Isstar mumbled in an echo before he shook his head. "Thanks. I know was an ass, probably still am, so... it means a lot that someone resonates with that." He let out a light hearten laugh. With his eyes to the fire, Isstar hadn't seen her blush or soften up, assuming Ava had kept her usual expression.
But at her next words, Isstar looked at Ava with surprise, then confusion. "Hah?" Isstar tilted his head. "Like hell I'm gonna rely on people!" He growled under his breath. "This is my issue. Just like I wouldn't get involved with other people's, they ain't gonna get involved with mine." Isstar stubbornly stated, his arms crossed while his foot tapped against the ground, his eyes narrowed at Ava.

"It proves everything, grump."
Ava said with a smirk, unaffected by the glare. It felt nice to be proven right, especially by the person who was denying the truth. Isstar was totally a grump.
"Survival of the fittest is nature, and that tree was weaker than me."
Now it was Ava's turn to grumble and look away, she crossed her arms and huffed. She did feel kinda bad for destroying that tree, but she wouldn't show it. Ava might have been all about nature but she definitely wasn't, she refused to be, a tree hugger.

"We're both asses, grump. We've both just become better at hiding it."
Ava said with a laugh. Isstar had changed a bit since she last saw him, that much was obvious, and Ava had changed too. Isstar was obviously better at being social and not taking literally everything literally. That was a bit of a shame, it had been hilarious while it had lasted.

Ava narrowed her eyes right back at Isstar, this stubborn brat.
"You literally can't live without relying on others at some point. You're a kid, grump, whether you want it or not. And kids need help. I'm gonna help you, but I'm a kid too so there's a limit. I won't tell anyone about this 'cos I'm apparently a good friend, but your best bet to live is to talk to an adult that knows more shit than you."
