School, another area of life John had largely drifted away from. Sure he got good grades, but things like it seemed to mean less anymore, they just didn't seem to matter as much. Overall being the immortal personification of death had taken its toll on him, on his emotions and mind. But, it was legally required, so he'd float through it all.

So the Horseman of Death walked through the halls looking like any other student in any other school. Classes were over, so he was gonna head out, fly to the city and try to find a bit of madness to distract himself. Unfortunately for the young Death, that was not to be, no he was going to encounter something else.

As he rounded the corner he was faced with an middle aged man, with a glow about him. The glow was off putting and borderline painful, the opposite of what he saw when dying. John squinted as his head ached at its sight, life magic perhaps, a weakness to him. "Uh...fuck..," he raised his hand a bit, "you're uh......a bit bright," he wasn't angry, or afraid, more curious than anything else. @Romi

Valli knew he was a demigod of course. It would have been hard to miss that. But for the most part, he'd assumed that his powers had remained like they always had. That he'd looked presentable and put together even when he didn't try and very little else.

The idea that life itself had taken a special interest in him was not something he'd noticed. He was not the sort of person who engaged in risky behavior regularly, and most of his accidents had been very minor and carefully averted.

So when someone stopped in front of him, squinting in his direction and telling him he was bright, Valli had absolutely no idea what he was talking about.

His eyebrows knit together in confusion as Valli tilted his head, trying to get a feel for the man. Student, most likely. High school? He seemed tall for that, but there were plenty of non-humans, so it was a bad habit to judge by that standard.

"Ah... thank you?" Valli said, trying to puzzle it out. "Are you on any substances, perhaps?" People seeing halos while taking drugs wasn't uncommon, and the man did seem taken aback in a way that someone who normally saw halos probably would not be.

The light was painful, not overwhelmingly so, but he definitely felt pain going through his head. "No....you're just damn bright," he didn't take drugs, he did occasionally drink, but nothing else really. He grunted and shook his head, "listen, I'm pretty sure it's life magic or something like that," he squinted more, trying to ignore it, "my powers sorta..clash with life stuff." He was Death, so his powers being affected by life or healing magic made sense.

He rubbed the aide of his head, trying to keep his eyes on the guy. "I'm gonna assume the glow is new...or you're just fucking with me," it had to be new, with reapers and other death beings being relatively common here. "You some sorta angel, or life god," lots of things could have life or healing magic.

John had had a few run ins with life and healing magic, all accidental incidents. "Yeah, better get the glow checked out, don't want some little kid reaper seeing that."

Valli's eyebrows remained pressed tightly together as the student described it as life magic. As far as Valli knew, he had absolutely nothing of the sort, so it was all news to him, but thankfully the student continued, giving him at least... some idea.

Some very general idea.

"I am a demigod," Valli said carefully. "Although as far as I am aware, I have no abilities that would qualify as life magic." It was unusual but not unheard of for someone to develop powers late in their life, but life magic? Wouldn't he have noticed something? "In fact, I barely have any abilities at all." He qualified as a demigod more by virtue of Manta Carlos not having any restrictions on how much godly blood qualified. He was only an eighth god, if that.

"Would it be bad if a child reaper did...?" He didn't really understand the consequences of it.

"Maybe, it would depend on how vulnerable they are to life magic, or whatever that is," he sighed a bit, realizing he's been rather rude. "Sorry, I'm being an ass," it was becoming more and more common, he didn't want to be like that. "I'm John," he offered his hand to shake.

"I'm a personification of Death, a Horseman," there was a time when he'd have hesitated telling someone that. "As a death being things like life magic tends to be painful, you're glow or whatever it is reminds me of it," he could handle it, but he was genuinely worried about the younger students.

"Are you a teacher?" he'd ask, the aura would definitely make things difficult if any student he worked with had a vulnerability to it.

Valli accepted the offered hand, giving it a firm shake as he did. Obviously skin contact wasn't bothering him, which was good.

"My name is Valli Bryndisarson, I work as a therapist here," Valli said, doing his best to sound calm and not at all like he was mentally twisting himself in knots at the idea of potentially injuring someone with his newfound... glow.

"I don't suppose there's a way to... to check? To know if there's life magic or not?" Why was it just coming up right then, anyway? Couldn't things on the island just stay calm for one moment? Apparently not.

John returned the handshake with one just as firm, "yeah, the school has ways of identifying different kinds of magic." He'd known what he was before he came here, but the school had confirmed that he was a death being, "probably have some tests for it."

He tilted his head a bit, "I haven't really felt anything quite like this a while." The cult had used life magic a few times, luckily said things didn't really do anything to his weapons. "It's almost like you're just radiating life," he chuckled a little.

Valli had never felt the need to check, because he'd never had anything odd about him. His mother had fairly mundane powers, and he'd had fairly mundane powers after her, so why go looking for something that apparently wasn't there?

Valli had to wonder if it had always been there, or if not, when had it popped up?

"Hm," Valli said, considering it. "I think that might actually be possible."

His grandfather had a strong association with life, after all. "Have you been around gods before? Do they... do that? Like, would a life god?" Baldr wasn't really a life god, but... well, he was very stubbornly alive.

"Not a lot of life gods no," at least none he knew about, he didn't really ask people their species or domains, seemed like an odd thing to ask. "I've uh....met mages who use life magic," fought and killed would be a more accurate description, but that wasn't something he was willing to talk to about to a stranger. "Your uh..thing isn't nearly as strong though," a good thing considering what it would do to him otherwise.

"It's sorta like...a light that got turned up to bright," it was a little bit of a pain in the ass, not dangerous to him, but that didn't necessarily mean it wouldn't be a danger to others, "can't say what it'll be like for others though."

Well, at least there was that much. It wasn't as strong as a life mage. Maybe it was connected to something else though. Was he getting some kind of life magic power? He wasn't even sure how to check, and while people might pick up on his new life-powers or what have you, they might not get more detail then that.

"Well, hopefully it doesn't bother anyone else," Valli said, his face slightly pinched. "I'll have to look into it immediately, in case it starts effecting my work. But thank you very much for telling me, at least. I'm not sure what kind of trouble I might have gotten in if you didn't."
