A date? Oh. Oh god no. Maybe it was kind of speciest of him or something, but the idea of dating someone like Minnie was... no. He probably went a shade paler at the idea, furiously shaking his head.

"No," Jude said. "Not like that. It..." He frowned for a moment, considering how to word it. It was kind of a delicate subject for a lot of people.

"She was eating something, but it was something I knew would make her sick. She has a non-human diet, so I pointed her to a place that would be able to feed her. At the time I thought it was just a matter of not knowing where to get her food, but it turns out she... well, she's in denial about what she is."

Zora pondered Jude's words as he spoke, not quite sure she completely understood or not. "You knew she had a non-human diet?" Zora queried.

"Then you two are friends?" she asked, a little confused still, because the way Minnie acted towards Jude was not friendly, and if a friend warns you about something like that, it's not a reason to get mad, was it?

"Denial? Denial about what exactly?" Zora said giving Jude a strange sideways glance look now. What did he know about this girl?

There was, realistically speaking, no way to get around it, and Jude was definitely squirming.

"Well," Jude said, weighing his words carefully. "It's more like my power. I... instinctively know the powers of other people. So even though we hadn't really met, I knew what she needed to eat, but she was one of those... you know when someone's new and they're like this is all just a dream, magic isn't real, demons don't exist? She's like that."

Okay, maybe he'd glossed over the big thing a little bit too quickly.

Zora frowned even deeper, "You know what other people's powers are?" she stated quite surprised by this admission. "So you know what I can do right?" not that it was a secret, but she'd be interested in knowing.

"So... Minnie is a demon, but she refuses to believe that?" Zora asked very curious now about
the pretty young girl. She didn't look like a demon, but then again, what did demons really look like?

She'd never spoke to him about her powers, but that didn't stop him from knowing anyway.

"You're a mage. You can teleport, manipulate water, you can tell if things are cursed or evil, you're unable to be cursed or bound by necromancers, and you're immortal."

Jude paused, giving her another look over.

"Only the first two are kind of wonky. Like someone pulled a tarp over them, and they're hard to see. Do they not work properly?"

He was betting on no, but it was a bit harder to tell than just reading her powers.

"I'd rather not say about Minnie," Jude said. "That's kind of why I didn't mention this power to you, or put it on my resume. There's a lot of things you can do with it, but I try and not use it much at all. It tends to make a lot of people uncomfortable. The only stuff I really do with it..."

He trailed off for a moment, thinking about it as they entered the office.

"Oh, Shale is a good example. You know his thing with vampires? If one comes around while he's hanging out with me, I just give him a quick nod and he knows to be careful."

"That's quite correct..." Zora said her voice trailing off as she looked at Jude slightly awed by his description of her abilities - he even knew that her powers weren't quite working correctly. "All of it, I'm afraid."

"And now you know why I have Broen," she said very simply, looking sideways at Jude and smiling.

"I cannot defend myself properly at the moment, my magic is too erratic... and if I am truthful, I may have hired him even if they were working perfectly. I am not a fighter - or I wasn't before all of this... " she said, realising how much it had forced her to change, and find other ways to defend herself.

Zora nodded and just accepted his decision not to tell her about Minnie. It was another display of how he could be discrete, and one that proved she was right to hire him - and well, trust in him too.

"Shale is going to get in trouble if he's not careful," she said, she had heard about his scuffle with Broen and some other when Celeste had gone looking for him. Heck, she had seen it for herself when she was there.

"Thanks, by the way for looking out for Shale. He is a good kid, but too easily provoked and probably lead into things unknowingly," she said to Jude.

"Shale is..." Jude frowned. He liked him. He really did. But he was going to get hurt. Not by Broen--Broen had himself too much in control to throw down with a kid--but with someone like him. Someone with less scruples.

"He's going to get in trouble," Jude agreed. "He's a nice kid, but he's... too protective. I mean, I'm not going to say your aunt is hot, but she's attractive enough she's going to draw attention, and if he flies off the handle every time someone tells her she looks nice, he's going to get in trouble."

It felt like a mercy that only Rory had done that for him. And only in private. What if she'd done it in front of him? God, that would have been awful.

"At this point there should be just a straight up support group for 'my mom is really hot and everyone wants to sleep with them'. There's like a dozen on the island."

"You can say it, I know, my aunt catches men's eyes - maybe a little too much at times..." Zora said smiling at Jude, at his wanting to be tactful.

"And yeah, Celeste is going to have to sit him down and talk about that." she agreed. "I know Broen won't thump him, but someone his own age might, or someone who's just being an asshole."

Hearing Jude say there should be a support group for kids with hot mothers made her burst out laughing, "Well, I am lucky not to have that problem," she said laughing, "If I had a child, he'd be probably scandalised, no traumatised, at my flirting." she told Jude quite honestly.

Jude actually, honestly, didn't consider Celeste to be hot. Not in the same way he'd consider someone like Rory or Broen to be hot. There was a line there, a mental line between someone who was in his general range and someone who was very much not. If he'd had to pick, he'd have said it was mostly because of the temptress--because making a mental line between the drop dead gorgeous femme fatale and people more his age had helped keep him from staring. He just sort of mentally placed all the super hot adults in a category of their own, the 'don't touch, don't even look' section.

Celeste wasn't quite like the temptress, but the whole idea of separation applied anyway.

He nodded along anyway, not wanting to correct her, and then let out a little sigh.

"I'm not sure how much I'm going to be able to help with him. I'm a lot of things, but able to handle something like this is... uh, not my strong suit. When people I like get mad, I tend to mostly slide to the side and let them tire themselves out, and with how Shale's going that'll mean visiting him on Juvie island because he jumped someone for saying the wrong thing."

"That's fine. I don't expect you to run interference between Shale and everyone who upsets him. He really needs to talk to somebody about his issues... " Zora said frowning. She understood that he was probably insecure and out of his depth on Manta Carlos. The island was definitely not like where he came from. He also was probably afraid to lose Celeste, and that she could understand.

"So, you are Angelo, the police officer? How does that even work?" Zora asked curiously, remembering their conversation from before.
