Oh crap. There they were. He could peptalk her to hell and back again, but that didn't make handling his own shit any easier.

It wasn't like he had a lot of experience with this or anything.

"Dating, I guess," he said. "Starting slow makes sense. Doing... date things. Human date things, I guess, since that's what I know. Going to the movies. Going to dinner. Shit like that. Adjusting. Trying to dodge Thanni when he tries to kill us for dating."

"Oh please," she said with a laugh, pushing Jackal gently with her hand. "I'll put Than I in a headlock and kick his ass at minigolf again. I tried to get with him for ages and it was always 'no. I can't let you win.'"

For the last bit, she pulled off a really bad impression of Thanni; a deep, self+important sounding voice. Letting her laugh trail off, Malara kind of smiled at the ceiling.

"Normal human dating stuff. I've tried that. It's fun in a mundane way." She snorted a bit and moved her eyes to look at him. "Like a couple of teenagers. Going to movies. Being home by eleven. Holding hands." She finished with a scandalized gasp. This was fine though. Slow was fine. She could handle slow, she hoped.

"Oh god, I take it back," Jackal said with an exaggerated sound of despair. "Not like teenagers. Like adults. If you try and make me wait for the third date before you'll kiss me I'm going to toss you off a bridge." Nope, that wasn't happening. He'd never been a teenager, and faced with the prospect he sure as hell wasn't eager to try it out, either.

"We can be dating like adults. Normal pace. Not slow. Just not super fast, either. Oh god, Saeta'll kill me, won't she?" She'd probably give him all kinds of dirty looks. That was how she was. Like a matron. Or some kind of mother hen.

Okay this was nice. Relaxing. Disarming, even. Mal could get behind this. "Okay okay. Dating like adults. Normal pace. You're so fickle, Jackie."

"But no. Saeta won't kill you. She knows you well enough. And much as she acts all in charge, I'm still her master. Gods with your job change you're really worried about people killing you, aren't you?"

"Well, it wasn't a concern before," Jackal said, lounging backwards on the couch like he'd been deboned. "I didn't have to worry. Now I do, because people can just kill me, and it's a huge pain in the ass having to go through hell every time. I have a job, and explaining why I was gone for a week is a huge mess. I already lost one job because I went gallivanting, last thing I want is to get picked off and miss a week of work with no notice."

Mal was getting antsy. She could feel it. The longer she sat here, the more nervous and needy she felt. He had said they were dating, so she figured she might as well take a chance. A small one.

Turning to face Jackal and simultaneously scooting closer so that her knees were tucked underneath her, Mal tested her head against his shoulder.

"I mean, that's all well and good. You know I have money though, right? Not saying like, that I'll just take care of you and you can sit on your ass all day. But if something happens I can help out if you lose your job."

God, she was like a teenager. Scooting close. Testing physical affection to see how he'd react. He was pretty sure they'd been way more physically affectionate than that as friends, and Jackal threw an arm around her shoulders just to attempt to ease some of the awkwardness.

"God, the last thing I want from you is your money. I spent my whole life with someone else taking care of things for me. I came here and now I'm independent. I have my own stuff. I have my own place. I have my own job. I could just get you to hire me, but then..."

He paused for a moment, just to consider and try and make it sound less insulting, and then winged it anyway.

"Same reason I won't become a disciple or worship you. Throws things off if I do. It's not even, and that's important." At least to him. And it should have been to them too.

"Yeah, yeah. I get it," Mal said as she leaned into him, enjoying the arm around her. She cracked a fanged grin and nuzzled her forehead against his shoulder, like a cat marking someone as their property. "It's just an open offer, you know? If you ever need it."

"What now?" she asked, her volume rising as her confidence did. It felt good being close to someone like this. Knowing that there was an intimacy beyond fucking. "Like, right now I mean. Do you want a drink? Do we talk more? What else do we talk about? There's the TV. We have a Switch, if Dalia didn't take it to school. We could go out, or.. whatever, you know? I told my secretary I was gonna be out of the office today, so I'm basically free."

Well, crap. That was pretty much the end of his outline. What else was he supposed to say? Uh.

Uh.

Crap.

"I'll tell the Drakenhardts about us at least," he said after a moment. "And I guess I'll tell Thanni." Who else? Work didn't need to know. He'd tell Tengu when he saw her in person. "Aside from that, not... all that much is going to change or anything."

They weren't blowing a hole in their existing dynamic or anything. That much wasn't changing.

"Talking, I guess. Not like I have any idea what to talk about. What did you talk about to Chloe when you brought on? You have to have like... house rules, don't you?"

"House rules..." Mal repeated almost mechanically. She gave kind of a nervous shrug and a grin to Jackal. "I mean, I guess not really? It was kind of understood when I got together with Chloe and Pandora that I didn't want any kind of expectation that I wouldn't sleep with anyone else. And of course they could kind of do as they pleased in that regard." Because saying that they couldn't while she could would have been hypocritical. And that was bad, from everything she had seen.

Her smile faltered just a bit as she thought about what she'd just said. Chloe and Pan had never complained about the arrangement that being with Malara had set forth. Cat certainly had, and now that she thought about it she wasn't sure how Jafar felt about the whole thing. Her eyes brightened with recognition and she exhaled sharply. A laugh, if a self-depreciating one. "Fuck."

"I think I see my problem..."
