When Jackal had asked it, it had been an actual, genuine question. He wasn't sure how things were set up. He didn't know what rules there were. He imagined there were rules to some effect. Things like when you introduced your lovers. How serious you got with others. If you could have them over. Shit like that.

Except Malara looked like she'd been kicked in the side. He winced at her expression, at the woosh of air as she exhaled, and at the small, pained laugh.

"Communication's key in any relationship," Jackal said. "Someone smart taught me that. Makes sense you wouldn't really feel the same way to start. Communication between gods and followers tends to be pretty... uh, one way."

Not that Mal was like that right then, but she almost certainly had been.

He waved his hand briefly. "I'm not expecting you to go solo and dump Chloe or anything like that, but I'm not sure I'll be going out to sow my wild oats, either."

"I'd thought about it before for sure. But I hadn't really. Ya know. Thought about it. It's different hearing it out loud."

She huffed and looked over at Jackal. He was doing much better with this than she was. And here she thought she'd been doing so well. It certainly did feel like she'd been kicked in the side. And not in the fun, definitely a turn on kind of way.

"Yeah I gotta talk to Chloe now. Fuck, I don't even know where to begin. Honestly I've been... certainly not less horny all the time, but random lovers has gotten. Boring? Hard to explain."

"So... ground rules. I don't think I want to sleep around. Or for my lovers to sleep around anymore." She added the anymore because realistically she knew that Chloe was. "I mean, it doesn't bother me? But there needs to be consistency." What else? Was that selfish? It seemed like it in her mind. She was a lust god, and here she was talking about not wanting people to fuck. How crazy was that?

"It's like eating food, I figure," said Jackal, who definitely did not have nearly enough experience to be speaking from it. "If you go to fancy restaurants every single day, you get bored of it. You want some home cooking. There's something to be said for dedicated lovers. People who know what you like."

And then it was Jackal's turn to get kicked in the side.

Malara Tor. Malara Tor wasn't going to sleep around. Jackal looked like he'd been kicked, squinting at her.

"There doesn't have to be consistency, you know. I'm not going to get bothered if you're sleeping with a bunch of people and you're not."

"There does though, Jackal." Malara said, leaning back and looking at him matter of fact. "If we're equals, it's not fair for me to ask you to not fuck whoever you want and then do it yourself."

His metaphor made sense too. It was why she liked dive bars and fast food as much as she liked fine dining and high society shit. "I mean, we can always change the rules as we go. But for now, I'm gonna hold myself to the same standard."

In Jackal's (extremely unbiased) opinion, it was on him to change his behavior to meet hers if it bothered him. But the way she was talking about it...

It almost sounded like she wanted it.

Like she wanted to try something new. Like she blamed her sleeping around for the failure of her relationships or something. Maybe he was reading too much into it, or maybe he wasn't, but...

Jackal paused, then leaned forward, going in for a kiss.

Malara didn't back away from the kiss, but she definitely let Jackal take the lead on it. Her fingers tangled in the back of his hair, sighing into his lips as she did. They had hugged and gotten really casually physical in their time as friends, but they obviously hadn't kissed yet. There wasn't anything that was new or special in the kiss. She had kissed plenty of people, even people with sharp teeth like his. But something about knowing it was him. About knowing that not long ago Jackal would have possibly vomited blood until he died at the idea of kissing Malara. It was like winning a prize.

She couldn't help it. Malara snorted, holding back the worst of a laugh as the two of them pulled back. "Sorry, sorry. You're fine, I promise. I was just thinking about having like a tiny trophy of you on my shelf, like an Oscar. Cause damn I feel like... wow, this is some kind of prize I've been working for."

Jackal was not much of a kisser. It was the teeth, mostly. Like, you had to be careful when kissing someone normally, but with Jackal you had to be really careful, because if your tongue moved the wrong way you were going to lose a chunk of it. So he mostly kept things small and chaste.

Malara, obviously, didn't have that restriction. Malara would probably enjoy his teeth cutting her up. But he didn't even get a chance to find out, because she snorted, making both of them pull back. His eyebrows went up, the confusion on his face--what had been funny about that?--before she finally explained.

"I'm a prize now, am I?" He put on his very best mock-offended tone. "I'm hardly a prize to be won, my dear."

"Life is a competition and everyone and everything is a prize, Jackal," Mal said all matter of fact as she leaned back against the arm on her side of the couch. Lounging, she reached a leg across his lap, pointing her toes forward and leaning her head back to look up at the ceiling.

"So that's that, huh? What else you got for me? Any other revelations? Concerns?"

He had a lot of other things. Questions. But almost all of them weren't going to get touched until Malara had already gone ahead and talked to the other people involved. He wanted to know what was going on with Chloe, after all.

But maybe that wasn't the best plan for their first date.

"I was thinking we could go for dinner." He said after a moment. "Like an actual date."

"Dinner sounds great, actually." Mal said, stretching out and standing up as she did. "Nothing expensive. What was that thing you said about eating at fancy restaurants every day?"

She started moving towards the door that led to her bedroom, smirking at him over her shoulder as she paused at the door frame. "I won't be long. Mind corking the wine bottle in the kitchen for me?"
