The little girl was roaming the library, attempting to forget that she couldn't go with her new daddy to work. She'd been with him for a little over a month now, she was even learning to sign - though slowly and sloppily - she was learning. She couldn't read yet, so she had to learn.

He'd bought a deck of picture-cards that most parents would use to teach their children to read; but he was using to teach her signs. She had a quick mind to learn, though. She was proud!

She had stopped talking after a while, though. She much preferred to be like her daddy and not talk, even though she could talk.

Faeyt was currently trying to climb a library shelf, she wanted a book and she wanted a book from a high shelf - so, she was trying to scale the shelf and tug one of the older, priceless books down - and if she got it, she would probably destroy it without meaning too.

Eventually this large tome, a first edition of something, and the little girl both hit the floor hard. She'd jerked the tome by the front cover when she'd lost her footing; and now lay on the ground, dazed.

After a moment she was tugging at pages and looking for pictures in this ancient text, completely unaware she was hurting the book.

> Tamara Nagi.

Tamara was working on shelving duty today and left the cataloging to one of her assistants. She found some books were starting to crumble from old age and poor use that she decided to look around to go with it. With each book she saw in disrepair, a soft sigh would escape her lips.

She couldn't really blame anyone. If books were kept in a less public area, it would be possible to preserve them. But this was the opposite of it. Older tomes required utmost care of those only expertly trained to handle them. That was one thing she'd learned from her father about old manuscripts. Ah, the books he personally owned were in mint condition thanks to him.

While she was carefully shelving the last of the books in the tray, she'd heard a loud thud from the shelf behind her. Alerted, she quickly ran to the shelf and found a little child, recklessly tugging at the book's pages. Panic first came over her after seeing the book being mishandled but the afterthought quickly followed that there was no one was nearby to look after the child.

Calmly, she walked to her, sitting next to the girl and placing a hand on the tome. Tamara was sure the child should have noticed her and gave her a soft smile.

Faeyt had just tugged a page free of the tome's binding, with a satisfying rip, when the lady sat down and touched it. She blinked upward, still absently tugging at the pages. She simply stared at the lady, trying to decide if it was okay to talk or not.

She still had no fear of strangers, much less other people around the school, but she liked to use her hands to talk - ever since her daddy had first started teaching her, she'd been really into it. Clearly it was intriguing or something, because she accepted it without question.

She offered a wide, toothy little grin as she reached to tug the book against her little form. Pictures! She wanted pictures. "Storytime?" She held the book out to the lady, blinking upward expectantly. The daycare worker always told stories, though Faeyt had not yet found out it would be hard to hear a story from a mute.

The dread almost completely showed in her eyes as soon as the page tore off the bindings. She only stood there in shock as she let the tragedy sink in and register in her thoughts. The tome was old, practically ancient, preserved, and taken with utmost care by only a select few in the academy. But now it was in the hands of a young child who, unaware of its value, had ripped off a page.

Tamara could faint.

Well, she could. But she could also have an asthma attack triggered by the shock. She could also have a little fit of anger towards the young one that had destroyed a treasure. Naturally, her reaction would have been the third but she had mustered enough of her sanity to stop her from doing such a thing to the child. And yet her reaction was immediate: she pried Faeyt off the book, gently holding her hand so she could have the child let go of the damaged material.

It didn't seem to hard but the next issue was trying to get the book repaired... assuming it was possible. Why shouldn't it, she thought, this was a school for the gifted. Someone was bound to be able to fix it. But then here was the issue of the child. It didn't look like someone was watching over her. Ah, why are the daycare workers so reckless to leave a child unattended.

The tome was heavy enough for her not to be able to carry it with one hand for too long so the first thing she had to do was put the child down and pick up the book. As she held it in her hands, she waved her finger at the girl telling her that "no, this is not a plaything". But when she walked she guided little Faeyt to walk with her, lightly patting her from her back. She cursed in her head for not being able to talk right now. Children were easy to talk to when you could actually talk. Alas, Tamara could not.

Faeyt peered upward as the book was taken, and the finger shaken in her face. That was what daddy did when she was bad, she knew it meant she was bad. And she quickly made the sloppy sign for 'I'm sorry'. She scrunched her nose.

Her daddy had been teaching her to sign for sometime now, and she only talked when other people talked to her - but this lady, this lady had shook her finger; so surely she talked like her daddy did!

She furrowed her brow. She was trying to remember how to sign her name. She clung to the librarian's hand, practically hanging off the woman as she stayed with her - and that priceless book that had become her toy.

It was normal for Faeyt to tear things up - she often ransacked her father's kitchen, or the living room - the girl did not understand how to be kind to inanimate objects.

Tamara was sure she'd heard the little girl talk but she was a little surprised to see the girl sign. Thinking nothing much of it for a moment, she went straight to the desk to one of her assistants. She left a message to find someone to repair the tome before turning to Faeyt, glad that she had understood enough to stay with her on their way to the front desk.

At that time, Tamara tried to remember how Faeyt tried to sign an apology to her. Thinking for a moment, she wondered if the little girl was hearing impaired. Not a lot of kids are taught to learn sign language at a very early age for no reason, after all. Tamara would have resolved to her usually communication procedure but she doubted a little girl like her could easily follow her written or encoded messages.

She knelt down in front of Faeyt and carefully signed, hoping the girl could understand. "Hello, what's your name?"

Faeyt lifted her hands to sign her name, each letter. She bobbed her head before signing, 'You do not talk either?' She peered at the lady. 'Can we play a game?' she asked, clapping her hands as she danced beside of Tamara.

'I like games.'

It was easy to say that Tamara was a little surprised that not only did she understand sign language, she could also sign herself. Tamara would have wanted to ask if she was hearing impaired but that question always seemed a bit rude and inappropriate. Either way, knowing that the girl, who'd introduced herself as "Faeyt", could sign makes things a little easier for her, Tamara thought.

'You do not talk either?' Faeyt signed.

Tamara simply shook her head before signing again. "I can't. No sounds come out. I'm Tamara." she signed, spelling out her name carefully enough.

Tamara hesitated a little when the fae child asked her to play; mostly because she was still on the clock, but neither could she leave this child without someone to look after her. The daycare should really watch over the kids better.

The parasite pondered a little. "Alright, we can play just a little. But later we need to take you back to day care, alright?" she signed.

Faeyt frowned slightly. She hadn't been at daycare - she had been with her daddy, out in the school gardens. Did not go to daycare. Gardens. It was true. She had not wanted to go to the daycare today, so she was with her daddy 'helping' him garden.

What are we playing? She peered upward, tilting her head to one side.

Tamara looked at Faeyt curiously. If the girl hand't been at the daycare then it could probably mean she was with her family, most likely her parents. My, how reckless of them to leave their child running around the school, she thought to herself. Tamara would have left the responsibility of looking for the child's parents to her assistants but then she thought she'd been waiting for an early break from archiving today so...

Tamara casually took out a notepad and wrote something to leave on her desk before turning to Faeyt, ushering her to the door. At least if she was going to skip work and "assist looking for a missing child's parent or guardian", she had better try and make an effort to not play around in the library.

On their way out, Tamara signed, "Games you like?"
