Sela just smiled at Neon. They weren't sure if they actually saw their "family" as family. Not in the way people used the term.

Symlink's invitation to play was happily taken up by Sela, who no longer wanted to think about what a family was. Their hand was soft but hard to explain. Condensed gas didn't have skin. It was a numb feeling.

"What do you want to play? I'm still learning games played here. I know hide-and-seek, tag, telling stories, and drawing with chalk.

Symlink thought a little on what to play. Playing tag sounded good, but telling stories sounded fun too... Except for the fact it was likely done at night. But Hide 'n Seek and drawing witch chalk seemed fun. "Hm... Back when I was a child...", Neon was trying to push into his own memories, to see if anything could come up... Eventually, perhaps from peering into Sela too much, he remembered something: "We used to play with tops! We also had this one game where we made a massive target on the sand and we tossed rocks in an arc by taking turns, trying to have it land closer to the center. Among my friends I was the best at that."

Upon listening to that and seeing the pleasant nostalgia on Neon's face, Symlink turned to Sela, as if asking them if they wanted to play that.

The concept of the game wasn't bad. It was something they would play in their dream world. Not something they would play in the awake world.

They looked down for a second, then raised their head up to look at Symlink. "Um... I don't think that'll work. The rock may go through me if I throw with too much force. I don't want to hurt anyone if that happens..." Admitting their concerns made them feel like such an inconvenience. They were ruining the fun idea Neon had simply because of how they existed.

"Just goes through you?" Neon sounded genuinely surprised, and Symlink confirmed with a nod. "I felt my hand could have slipped through her... Or his?", Symlink sounded a bit uncertain about how to address Sela. "Normally the pronouns used is they/them/their, unless they prefer otherwise.", Neon explained, "So, rock won't sit in your hand... ... I could use some illusions to set up a large board game here...".

Sela didn't comment on the pronouns discussion. It wasn't something they cared about. Genders and pronouns seemed like things people used to individualize themselves. Sela acknowledged themself as an individual didn't see the need to use gender identities. It was making them something more than they were.

"A board game sounds fun! I wish I could make illusions. Connecting with the awake world is hard... It feels like I'm not... there..."

"I can't begin to imagine your struggle...", Neon's closest experience to that was while he was still a "ghost in the machine", people telling him he was dead and that he could not be there... It no longer bothered him, however. "But you are here. Me and dad are talking to you after all, aren't we?", Symlink's assertion was followed by Neon nodded, something seeping out of the large fox's mouth and large chess pieces appearing out of nowhere, as he started to form the illusion of a large chess board.

Sela smile said, Are you sure about that? Were they themself sure about that? Symlink and Neon were speaking to them, but only the current version of them. At any time, this version could be replaced with another.

"You are, yes," they replied quietly as they focused intently on the illusion. Their voice returned to normal as they continued. "You want to play chess? I know some of the rules, but I've played and seen similar games. I want to try!"

"I don't... Know the rules much.", Symlink giggled nervously, ashamed at his lack of knowledge. "That I can help with, just don't expect me to play for you. After all, I... Normally don't go for complex illusions.", and while setting up the board illusion, Neon began using both illusions and words to simplify it to his son. However he unintentionally missed advanced techniques. After all, he only knew so much.

The giggle went right over Sela's head. They assumed Symlink made a joke they didn't catch onto, something that happened often enough for them to not bother asking questions about anymore.

Neon's visual explanation of chess helped a lot. The verbal explanation? Not so much. Sela understood most of it, but they weren't an auditory learner. They learned by seeing, then doing.

"I understand now." Or they thought they did. They weren't completely confident in their understanding. When it came to people, nothing was as simple as it seemed. "Can I make the first move?"

"Why not, I guess?", Symlink said, trying to comprehend what he heard. "We won't be playing entirely from the official rules, so if you want to pick white and go second, or black and go first, or have all the time to think, go ahead.", and Neon would sit beside the board, awaiting for their game to be played.
