Henghai got up from his seat and pulled out a small styrofoam cup. He filled it up with lukewarm water, then handed it over to Carmin. "Feel free to get more if you so desire," he said before returning to his seat.

He crossed one leg over the other and rested his hands on his lap. "So I guess we should figure out how much magic your body works off of. If magic isn't the reason you're experiencing these random growths, there may be a solution I can direct you towards. As of now, the mana in the air is something everyone has to deal with, so I have no solution there. With that said, you said none of your flowers grow like normal? How do they grow?"

“Right.” Carmin nodded, taking the water and having a sip.

“So, regular flowers take time to grow and bloom. Like a long time, I’m sure you’re aware. But these ones just pop up. You pull one off and a new ones grows back in just a minute.” He then looked up to the flower on his head which he could only see part of. “And I think this one speaks for itself. An ordinary pa- flower of this type would never get this big.” As for how that big flower grew or what happened when it was yanked off? Carmin didn’t actually know too much.

Henghai snickered at Carmin's last statement. "Ah, I didn't mean to be rude," he said while covering his mouth. "I'm not from the Narrow Reality. A flower like that is well within the realm of possibilities of my world."

That was one difficulty with Henghai's job: cultural differences. His world relied on magic and had flora and fauna very different from what most human societies had.

Henghai removed the hand from his mouth and laid it back on his lap. "Anyhow, that does sound magical. My son has a similar problem. He has an aura that can make plants grow at absurd speeds and to absurd heights. Back to the point, have you been taking any medication that could lead to speedier growth of your flowers? I'm trying to think through all possibilities that could cause a flower to grow on a person so quickly."

From his time working at the witch’s plant shop, Carmin actually had a decent idea of what the flowers Henghai was referring to could be like. “It’s fine.”

An aura that made plants grow. Carmin had run into a few people now with abilities like that. It was just unfortunate that they never seemed to make him grow. Well aside from making more of those dumb flowers pop up.

“I don’t know if I even can take medication. And even if I could I haven’t taken anything in a long while.”

"Why can't you take medication?" Henghai leaned forward. He had his suspicions, but guessing immediately could lead to offense and hurt his credibility.

"At least where I come from, medication usually needs a blood stream of some sort. That or you eat it. I don't have a stomach or veins so I'm guessing it's not something I can do." That really had him wondering what medication was like on the island. There were a lot of different types of species and probably tons of different diseases as well. They probably had all sorts of methods for curing people too. Perhaps there was even medication meant for him.

No blood, stomach, or veins. Henghai was certain of what was happening.

"You were questioning if you were magic, yes? To be alive and sapient without all that you have listed certainly sounds magical to me. Would it be correct to assume that you're a sapient plant? I think the mana in the air that's effecting everyone is also effecting your magical qualities keeping you alive and functioning."

A sapient plant. He didn't like to think of it like that, but it was completely accurate. "I suppose that's right." He kept listening to Henghai's assumption after that.

The way he put it, with the mana in the air likely being the culprit made sense, but that left Carmin with one concern. "Okay, I don't know much about the mana thing, how long does something like that usually last?" As usual he was completely out of the loop on the whole state of the island.

"I don't have an answer for that," Henghai said flatly. He kept his tone cool and even, not wanting to worry the child. "Everyone is wondering the same thing. After the Dark Crystal students and staff have unfrozen, magic becoming stronger is unnervingly suspicious. Nothing bad has happened, however. People's magic has had a mild boost. That's it."

Well that was no good. Hopefully it wasn't going to be long. "So I just put up with this until it goes back to normal?" There was so much uncertainty on the island. With some of the people he'd met so far, Carmin was honestly a little shocked at how often something inexplicable happened on the island. Surely one of these folks could tell what was going on. Or perhaps that was just the issue, too many different crazy things going on to pinpoint which one was the cause of craziness at any given time.
