it's been a "ruff" day

There were very few things in life that could annoy Kristen. Chewing with your mouth open? Didn't faze her. Talking on your phone on public transport? Could be worse. Pushy mall kiosk salespeople that won't take 'no' for an answer? They're just doing their jobs.

The point was, Kris was a laid-back person. But, you see, the whole point of volunteering at an animal hospital was to, y'know, work with animals. Not sit at the front desk and play Candy Crush on your phone for hours on end. She let out a long-winded sigh as her screen blew up with joyful music and colorful explosions. It was a quiet day, and the receptionist was out sick. She understood all too well why she had to man the front desk today, but it didn't mean she had to like it.

She was about to open another game when the bell over the door chimed, announcing a guest. She immediately sat up, perking right up in genuine interest. "Hello, how can I help you? Do you have an appointment?"

Simon had been on his way back from a particularly choppy surf session, wetsuit pulled around his waist and board still under his arm, when he'd seen the lil' guy whining near one of the trees near the parking lot. Upon getting closer he found it was a mutt puppy, seated in a half-crushed box that seemed to have been left there by some heartless motherfucking asshole-- Okay, dude. Chill out. Puppy doesn't need a Hulk-situation.

Anyway, Simon went to reach down and the dog was friendly enough, tail wagging but still crying and cautious (as s/he had every right to be). Her front right paw dangled gingerly above the ground, and when he reached out to touch it she cried in pain.

That's how he ended up at the animal shelter fifteen minutes later (back in street clothes), little dog whimpering and shaking in his careful hands. The girl at the front desk was evidently engrossed in a game of Candy Crush, but as soon as he approached her head snapped to attention.

"Hey, uh, I was at the beach near here and I found this little guy in a box near the parking lot. Looks sort of wounded..." Simon extended his cupped hands to show her, "I didn't see anyone around taking care of him (or her?) or anything, and I waited for a little while too, so I figured I'd bring 'im here and see if we could at least figure out what's wrong with that leg?"
