Adrastia was lost. That was why she was looking like a friggin superhero in a cafe sitting across from Jude, almost as if it were old times. Except, Jude was wearing a tank top and not his usual suit. And everyone they loved and knew was gone and dead. Eaten or worse, Adrastia didn't know.
She smiled tersely at him, drumming her fingers on the table. He wanted to tell her something. Explain to her his living situation. She doubted her coming to this new world was as interesting as what happened to him.
"So," Jude started with a little huff as he wondered where the hell he was supposed to start. "Guess today was the day I should have brought a hoodie?"
Maybe humor wasn't the best option.
"So, uh," Jude said, "I ended up here with me. Like, the me from this world. Wound up in his hallway and all that. And he's uh..."
He had to pause, figuring out how he wanted to drop that bomb. "An adult, for one."
"Probably," Adrastia agreed, giving his bare arms something of a heated look, if not teasingly so.
When Jude explained that the Angelo he'd been sacked with was an adult, she groaned. "Great, all the people I dig are adults? Do I have a problem?" She smiled a little, drummed her fingers along the table they sat at. She hadn't expected this to be so awkward.
"You're still sacked with Gilly... I kind of expected them to leave after... well this."
"And a cop," Jude added. "Officer Genovese. And there's no equivalent of my dad here, not really. Officer Genovese doesn't even know who his dad is."
That wasn't addressing the giant sphinx in the room, was it?
"No, they didn't. They went with me, but like..." Jude paused for a moment, trying to figure out how to explain it. "They're separate. Like they've been cut off from the other Gultha. They're no longer a part of the whole. So I think the Gultha are gone?"
Adrastia shrugged. "Guess it doesn't really matter, with Gilten, eh? I still probably can't touch you. Our world is still gone." And she had to pause there because if Adrastia didn't stop talking she was going to cry and she really didn't want to cry in front of Jude.
"But a cop? Well, that's a long shot from your dad."
"It's an adjustment," Jude said. He knew there was... something there. Something bad. But he really didn't want to dig. He really didn't.
"So it's Angelo, who's a cop and an adult, and then he adopted a bunch of kids from this crime lord who ran off and left them. One of them is Shay--she doesn't live with us and she's really really weird and she's pregnant--and the other is Roa. He's, uh... the son of Satan. He's really nice, but he's mad basically all the time."
"Sounds like Hell," Adrastia said before really giving it any thought. Then she rubbed her eyes under her glasses, pushing them over her forehead and laughing without humor behind it.
"So, should I not meet them? I guess what I'm asking is... am I going to be a dirty secret again, Ang?" She smiled, held her hand off her face so she could see him and flash him a wink to let him know she was only playing with him, as she was prone to doing.
Jude snorted at the comment, amused. "I mean, there's a bunch of demons, so yep... kind of hellish. I mean, Roa's actually half-angel, but the demon stuff is... uh, a lot more obvious. By a lot."
A lot a lot.
"You can come over after this if you want. Officer Genovese'll probably have you over for dinner. Especially since..." Jude paused, considering. "Do you have anyone? Like, uh, original you."
Adrastia shrugged, clearly not intent on talking about it. But they'd promised not to keep any more secrets, not that it mattered now. They weren't even heroes anymore.
"A version of my mom back in Brooklyn, but it's really not the same. I'm living at the school now. I don't suppose you'd want my dorm number? Why that would be more scandalous than my taking you to dinner."
"It's not really here. No one cares. That's the one thing I learned more than anything. Everyone is very... uh... open. Like, people just... do stuff like that. And it's not a big deal. People are... people are weird here."
They still couldn't touch. It wasn't like it mattered. Not really.
