It's A Winter Wonderland

Faeyt had been living in the hospital for going on three months. Sometime in October she had been found by her father, early in the morning — and she was not breathing. Her lips and skin were starting to turn blue, and she was breathing very shallowly. The man had rushed her to the emergency room, only for her to be taken away without a word.

Faeyt Chord was admitted two hours after being brought in — they diagnosed with a pulmonary edema — which meant that she had caused her lungs to fill with fluid. They informed her father of the diagnosis and as they had prior dealings with young Miss Chord, they informed him that the symptoms had probably been showing for quite a while — up to as far back as a month before the edema became an issue. They were swift to reassure him that he was not at fault — for their diagnosis also led to the belief that her seizures had caused the edema.

Within four to five hours later, Faeyt was on an oxygen machine in a medically induced coma. They had warned that there could be brain damage — and as a precaution they had placed her in a coma in hopes of being able to re-oxygenate her body without harming her, as 100% oxygen could hard the person in question rather than help them.

She was in that coma from October until November, when her doctor attempted to medically bring her out of the coma — only for her not to wake. Then, sometime in early December, the little girl woke from her coma, and struggled against her breathing tube. A nurse had quickly removed the tube — because if she was struggling, she was trying to breathe on her own — and helped her sit up.

The little girl had stared silently upward, and reached for the woman to cling to her — she would have begun crying if the nurse had not been the usual nurse who treated her, or screaming — if her mouth was not so parched. The little girl was thin, her muscles weakened but not useless, from disuse.

Her father was summoned upon her wakening. The child was swaddled and sitting in a wheelchair with one of the various stuffed toys her father had brought for her, in her lap. The small girl had been scooped up and promptly coddled by her father that night — well into the next morning when the man summoned the woman that Faeyt called 'mommy'.

She was to stay in the hospital for a week after waking, but that changed when she had a grand-mal seizure during physical therapy. She was then to stay until they figured out medication to control her seizures, as the seizures had caused her to stop breathing in the first place.

But today, December 30th, 2015... Today was the day. Faeyt still had to attend physical therapy, but they had figured a cocktail of medications out that would help control her seizures — even if it were to lessen them and not stop them completely.

She was being wheeled by a nurse to say goodbye to all of the other long-term patients, giggling as she was hugged and kissed and given keep-sakes by each person. Eventually they wheeled to the nurses' station, where Faeyt was sat up on the desk and left to chat with the receptionist while they awaited her father.

"Are you excited to go back to school, Fae?" The nurse inquired, as she checked the child's blanket — "Excited! Excited! School be fun." She bobbed her head happily as she signed. She was still dressed in her hospital gown — hopefully her father remembered to bring her some warm clothes. "Did you get to talk to him on the phone last night?" The child twisted around to stare at the nurse and began to sign: "Daddy cannot talk." The woman chuckled. "Well, did you at least Skype him?" They had set up a laptop for the child to Skype her family on, seeing as 'talk' was not the right word to use for the rag-tag family — as far as the nurses knew, both of her parents signed and so did she; though it had been a recent development; Faeyt's signing, so they still forgot she preferred it over talking.

Faeyt nodded to that, "Daddy said he has to work today. What if he forgot?" She inquired, staring up at the nurse with wide eyes. The nurse simply shook her head and moved Faeyt slightly — "How about you help me work on my paperwork, hm?" She offered the child some crayons and a coloring page. She was lucky, because the little girl took the idea.

Whenever Sai arrived, he would find his little daughter sprawled out on top of the receptionists' rather large desk, with a blanket over her, dressed in a hospital gown with a diaper (for as much as she hated wearing diapers, they had put her in one for her stay in the hospital — especially until she could walk without the crutches they had given her) on.

Sai would never forget his daughter. Throughout her time at the hospital, he held concerns over the well-being of his little girl. He adored her, so to see her become so ill and to realize just how serious her condition was killed him. Even so, he had to move on with his life while keeping an eye on her. While she was at the hospital, he made frequent visits and purchased gifts to keep her happy. He would often spend long hours with her whenever he could and even slept over at the hospital occasionally. He longed for the day that she could go back home.

Meanwhile he also took the time to figure out his relationship with Tamara. They seemed to be gravitating towards one another. He felt more comfortable having the woman in his home now. At first he wanted to object because it's not like he knew the strange blonde that worked in the school library. Her presence inspired rumors and also kept him from dating other women. He already had a limited date life because he had a kid; having the kid see another woman as her mommy made it impossible for him to date other women. He especially couldn't act in the way he did just a year or so ago.

Things were looking up now. He received news that his daughter was healthy enough to be taken out of the hospital. However, a seizure kept the young girl from leaving with her father. Disappointed but hopeful, the mute siren waited patiently for the day he could bring his little girl back home. If it wasn't for work and other responsibilities, then he would have stayed in the hospital with her. However, those obligations left him having to settle with checking in on her periodically and spent long stretches of time with her when he could.

On the day of her discharge, he decided to run back home and prepare a meal comprised of Faeyt's favorite foods for her. He wanted to give her a good welcome. Throughout the past few days, there were still holiday decorations sitting around with a pile of presents waiting for the little girl. Hey, he had to surprise her with something! The presents were in reality from multiple recipients, but he didn't leave any indication of that so it looked like Santa Claus flew it and plopped them there.

When he saw the time, he flipped out. He still had to do one additional task for work before he could run and pick up Faeyt. The moment he was done, he rushed out to the hospital and went blazing through the doors. When he arrived, he noticed his daughter at the reception desk. A huge grin graced his face as he used a nearby sound to create a welcoming chime for the little girl. The siren hurried over to her. He noticed she had paper and crayons. One of the staff members probably gave her that stuff to preoccupy her while she waited.

His first action was to give the little girl lying there under a blanket a big hug.

The child squealed loudly when she heard the chiming. The nurse had jumped a bit, but it was when the child threw her crayons and blanket down to cling to the man and laugh, that she realized the girl's father was here.

"Daddy!" She signed the word against the back of her father's neck, since he could not see her hands as she was hugging him. The little blonde girl held as tightly as she could to her father — and was soon tugging at his hair and doing a little dance on top of the receptionist's desk.

"Hey! Faeyt. Doll, your legs will give out if you aren't careful." The woman was already separating out new medications, with written instructions on how to take them, as well as the set of small leg braces and the crutches that went with them. "And... once you go get dressed, Miss Chord, you and your daddy can leave! I bet Santa left you all kinds of presents back home, huh?" The woman chuckled as she shook her head and signed the official release form for the toddler.

"Now you remember. Stay warm. No playing in the snow for too long. If you see auras, tell your daddy." She turned her gaze to Sai with a chuckle. "She's been a handful, all day asking when you were coming. There's some dis-solvable pills — if she is able to warn you about a seizure before it happens, these blue ones here — dissolve them into hot water and get as much of that into her as you can. These pink ones are chewable albuterol pills — for her breathing. She also has an inhaler now, as well as a fancy bracelet with a screen that states her medical information; such as her name, your name, your phone number — a note about her disorders." The woman glanced down to the rather large piles of medication and began to put them into small baggies, each baggie was marked with a day of the week — there was a week's worth of medication there and then three baggies labelled 'USE AS NEEDED'. Once that was done, the nurse grinned. "I put instructions for each medication in the particular baggie it resides in. But, if you need help, you can just text me —" She dropped a number into the large bag in which she had placed all of the smaller bags. "— I'm Faeyt's usual nurse, Nurse Maylee."

Now that the nurse was finished, and Faeyt was jumping about on the desk, already eager to get out of the hospital gown — as she was soon tugging the gown over her head, or trying too. It got caught on one of her ears, and she lost her footing and tumbled backwards with a whining squeal. The child huffed.

The little girl's braces were already on, her crutches were resting beside the bag of medicines. "Daddy I want new clothes!" She signed from beneath the hospital gown, as she tried to squirm her way out of it.

If the man had the ability to laugh, then he would in this moment of time. Instead he beamed and silently chuckled as his hair was pulled by the little girl. She was so happy to see him! Her reaction made his heart soar. He adored his little four-year-old; now she could come back home with him! This excited him quite a bit. He kept hugging the girl as the nurse approached him. He only let go when he noticed her presence and the many plastic bags. It was likely that those were new prescriptions Faeyt needed. She was admittedly a high maintenance child due to her illnesses, but he didn't mind one bit. Her medical history didn't deter him one bit.

The father listened to the nurse diligently while keeping a close eye on the cute girl. He had to make sure she didn't accidentally hurt herself while they were conversing. He nodded at each point and took a mental note of the drugs. To show that he was listening and to assist with memory, he repeated her instructions back with hand signs. Once all of the instructions were done, he thanked the nurse and grabbed the bag of medication. It was a lot, but he could keep track of this. The dad glanced at his flailing daughter and lightly frowned. He moved over to her side.

"I brought an outfit for you to wear. Come with me."

He was not about to let her change in public. He was taking her over to a nearby room so that she could put on her clothes. The outfit he had was warm and well-coordinated color wise. She would look like such a little cutie in it. He also made sure to get boots for her since it was definitely boot weather today. Winter arrived, and he had to make sure she didn't get sick again. The siren offered her the clothes and pointed into the room as he lightly cracked the door open for her.

Faeyt crinkled her nose at her father as she tugged the hospital gown down and held tightly to the crutches — they had a metal ring that kept them in place on her arms. The child hobbled after her daddy as fast as she could. She did not like the crutches — but she was even slower without the crutches.

Faeyt beamed upward as she once again began to strip as she entered the room her father had entered. The little girl dropped her crutches and stood with her arms above her head, gurgling thoughtfully toward her father.

The child absolutely adored her daddy — the man was a God, as far as this little child was concerned. She signed absently as she waited to be dressed, "Did the plants die? Did the roses?" The girl loved the roses in the garden at the school.

She scrunched her nose upward as she stamped her bare feet, the metal braces on her legs creaked for a moment or two at the violent movements before adjusting. "When we go home can I have real food?" As much as she liked the hospital staff, the food was just awful.

The little fae-child bounced up and down, up and down, careful of herself. "Can I have a baby hippogriff? Marcey said she saw someone selling baby animals." Marcey was one of her many friends in the children's ward — though Marcey had a terminal disease, but she had not told Faeyt that.

The child would huff as her father dressed her — or rather, helped her dress herself. When it came to the boots, she clung tightly to her daddy's arm, an attempt to stay upright. Once her boots were on she stamped about, and one could not even tell she had braces on her legs! This pleased her greatly.

Once she was all dressed, she was ready to just go - go - go!

If this was a normal campus, all of the plants would have been dead. However, this was not a normal campus. They had special measures to retain the beautiful flowers but have them in a pretty winter theme that fits the snowy atmosphere. He still had to shovel and plow though. The walkways wouldn't clear themselves. He realized that she didn't get to see the new campus yet. He would have to show her the new and beautiful winter wonderland that awaited her. He entered the room with her and shut the door behind him. They didn't need perverts looking at what they were doing.

The father began to gently remove the gown and help the girl get dressed. The clutches were a hindrance, but she would have to deal with them for now. He knew she probably wanted to rip them off and go crazy. She of course asked about the plants. He hand signed to her in between dressing her.

"The plants are alive but different now. They are magic plants that change with the season. The roses are still mostly the same but they changed color."

She now just needed her socks and shoes. He pulled out the socks and took a look at the braces as he unrolled them. Now to be careful....he didn't want to hurt her while helping her into her shoes and socks. He slipped on the socks first. Before grabbing the boots, he answered her additional questions.

"I cooked a special meal just for you. I have to talk to your mother about the hippogriff."

He really did not want to get a pet hippogriff, but he would propose the idea to Tamara anyway. It was odd to call the woman Faeyt's mother when she both wasn't related to Faeyt and also became her mother while being a total stranger to them both. Now he was dating that woman. It would be unfair not to call her mom though; she also did her part in caring for the little girl. They switched back and forth when it came to cooking and watched after her. They even scheduled their shifts specifically so that they could take turns in looking after her. Thankfully the school was more than accommodating and helped them out as well. What helped was that they were both employees.

Sai slipped both of Faeyt's boots on. He smiled and stood up to get the door.

Faeyt beamed upward as she clung to her father's hand, hugging her crutches to her form with the other. ''Is mommy at home?" The girl gazed upward as she began to pull her father out the door.

Faeyt released her father's hand to wave happily at the hospital staff — mainly nurses. She was 'quiet' the rest of the walk out of the hospital, hugging her crutches and holding onto her father, rather than using her crutches to walk. It meant she was slow and wobbly with just the leg-braces, but...

She stared around at the cold snow and gasped, tugging her father's hand and pointing — almost dropping the crutches. She huffed at this fact and released her father to properly use the crutches — which were still hooked to her arms. "Pretty! What is it?"

Faeyt peered upward toward her father in a suspicious manner. "Is it from Santa Claus?" The girl had heard from all of her friends in the children's ward about a mysterious man called Santa Claus! And she just... wanted to meet him.

And tell him thank you for delivering all the pretty presents to her friends. Yes, a lot of her new friends did not have a mommy AND a daddy, but they got presents from Santa — well, the hospital, really.

It did not bother her though, her daddy always had something new for her to snuggle and play with — or those days where her mommy and her daddy had both been able to come visit at the same time. She knew all her friends envied that — they'd told her as much.

"Not yet. She is still working."

He couldn't remember if it was one of the days she was part-timing in the nurse's office. If she was, then that might explain the time. A number of people fell ill at campus generally during the cold months. It only makes senses; colds, flu, and bazosneezles were common in the month of December. He just hoped that she wouldn't take long. He guided his daughter out of the hospital and nodded goodbye to the medical staff as they walked past. She would be back home just in time for the holidays. It was past Christmas, but there was still time for New Years. Maybe they could watch the fireworks display together.

When they arrived outside, Fae reacted excitedly. At first he was confused until she went diving for the snow. Oh, yeah, snow! It impressed him less since he performed landscape on the campus for years now, but he could remember his reaction when he was a teenager on land. His face was priceless; the snow bewildered him. Snow never happened in the ocean; the ocean remained relatively stable throughout the year. Now she was asking if this was a product from Santa. Yet another smile appeared on his face.

"This is snow."

He stepped over to create a snowball. He extended it to Faeyt and once again used the hand sign for snow.

"Maybe Santa has a magic snow machine."

The thought of it made him chuckle internally. Then again, Santa Claus could actually be a real entity. Elves were a real thing already; a fat man in a red suit delivering presents didn't seem that far fetched. After all, this was Manta Carlos island. Everything that people thought wasn't real was truly real on this island. Now he pondered the existence of the North Pole as he glanced further out beyond the hospital.

"You want to eat first?"

"No. I want presents first." She hobbled along with her father, studying the snowball he had given her, until it melted away in her little hand. When it melted, she wiped her hands off on the fuzzy part of her crutches.

The child beamed upward at her father, offering a wide grin to him as her braces clicked gently when she stepped up onto the sidewalk after crossing the street. Soon enough they were almost home.

The child frowned as she struggled with the stairs — her braces were very uncomfortable trying to go up the stairs — but eventually she made it! Once at the top of the stairs, she turned around to wave down at her daddy, before bouncing up and down!

"Come on, come on! Daddy you're so slow!"

The father and daughter pair walked home together. Faeyt wanted presents first? That was fine with him. He noticed how she struggled with the braces and crutches and glanced at her worriedly. The young man could have walked faster, but he opted to go a slower pace so that he could serve as backup. The last thing he wanted was for her to fall over or stumble. He wanted to be able to catch her at least. In a relatively short amount of time, they arrived back at the place. It was a modest home with some pretty holiday decorations he put up. Nothing extravagant; he wasn't rich after all, and putting lights up was a pain.

He silently chuckled as she reached the top of the stairs before him. He swiftly stepped onto the porch and whipped out his keys. He unlocked the door and opened it. He allowed Fae to go in first. Once she went in, he stepped in the house and closed the door behind him. He locked the door and took off his shoes. The front hallway had pretty Christmas lights adorning it. Going further into the house and out of the small hallway would lead straight to the living room and kitchen. The living room was first with the kitchen further back.

Considering Faeyt's choice of presents first, this was a perfect time for her to notice the Christmas tree sitting in the living room and the various wrapped presents underneath the tree. All the presents were for her; Tamara and Sai already received and opened their presents earlier. He smiled and dramatically gestured to the tree. It was as if he was presenting a stage show. Siren daddy was being silly as usual.

"All of them are for you."

What she would find would probably be lots of nice toys and games. All of them were labeled from Santa.
