"Ahem."
The woman looked very strange, really. Twintails? On a teacher? Sure, she kinda looked like a teacher - her blazer was definitely in the right place, and so was the rest of her attire. Sure, she had a teacher's briefcase... bag... thingie..., which looked professional. But really - the teacher in front of the tired students looked more like a strange, twisted version of a childish girl.
Nevertheless, she commanded attention, glancing around the room with those large, eerily unsettling cat's eyes. Placing her hands on the podium in front of her, she sighed. Her booming voice sounded again, echoing through the room.
"Hey, everyone. Your regular teacher's out for the day, so I'm here to sub for them. For those of you who've graduated my high school Magic course, you might remember me as- "
Here, she walked over to the board and scrawled her name in loopy cursive.
"Ms. Deaux. Feel free to call me Dee, or Ms. D, or D-zaster, I don't care."
There was a certain way she spoke to the class - a smooth but casual tone that lilted a little bit, hints of an unplaceable accent. Maybe it was Japanese? Or maybe she was making it up.
Yeah, she was definitely making it up. The hints vanished, as she turned back to the class, and clapped her hands.
"Your teacher seems to have left some work for you guys, so you could probably do it now. Page 329 should have some helpful info for you, seeing as this is a healing/defense course..."
This, she also scrawled on the board.
"Anyone have any questions?"

Shit shit shit shit.

Okay so they were used to him being a little late. There was always an unspoken understanding that there was a 10 minute grace period at the beginning of Soren's classes. He was still finding his way around the island- this area even- and sometimes it all just got a little confusing. He was normally very spacially aware, but that only counted to his immediate vicinity.

No one really minded, then again. At least no one complained. He doubted that a few extra minutes to consult on homwork or play on phones bothered anyone, so he wasn't expecting anything weird to be going on as he popped through the doors of the classroom.

They'd all given permission at the beginning of the semester for him to speak to them with his powers- not all at once, some had to be convinced and took a week or so- but it happened eventually. "Sorry I'm a bit more behind than usual-" he started mentally as he walked in, bag already floating itself off his shoulder from his telekinesis, he himself shrugging off his jacket at the same time. He paused midway through the actions, though, and looked towards the front of the room in a bit of confusion. The pause, his pose halfway taking off his coat, bag floating in midair, and the weird silence made him seem a bit more awkward than usual. Just a bit.

Soren paused and waved his fingers slightly, a worn index card elegantly flipping itself from the back document panel of his laptop bag and floating over to Falina as he hung up his jacket and approached the front. It was printed and dog eared, with "PEER 1X1" scribbled on the bottom right corner. He pointed to it a little frantically, like he had an urgent question but couldn't say it.

"Hi, I'm Soren MacLeod. I teach healing and defensive magic. I'm Deaf and glossophobic, which means I can't hear and I don't speak. We can communicate through my telepathy, though. Just give any positive indication if you give me permission. Thanks."

Oh.
The minute she had finished asking the class if they had any questions, someone else burst in. At first, Falina thought it was another student - but no. As she looked him up and down, she realized that, hey doofus, this was the teacher she'd been covering for. Who knew he lived? Or that he'd be around so early? Judging from the more-than-obvious floating bag and the floating index card, she could deduce that the guy who had just came in was indeed the Magic teacher. Telekinesis... huh. That wasn't exactly new, but it was still interesting to her catlike curiosity. He looked like he needed a little bit of help... because he sure as Hell looked awkward just standing there, coat half-off and staring at her.
The class didn't seem at ALL fazed by this. Of course they wouldn't, she reasoned, they're probably used to it by now. Eyes flitting over the clearly-worn card, she nodded at him.
And then, holding up a finger to the class, she strode over to the guy's side, making sure her hands were free.
"Well, hello there, Mr. MacLeod. Good to see you showed up to class." Even before she'd had time to process what the guy had said to her, she'd crossed into her knowledge of ASL (however broken it might have been - she maaay have said "hi there is mr. mac cloud see you classy"). Even though it may have been a bit broken, she quickly pocketed her hands once she fully understood his sentence.
"Oh - well then, is this enough?" she asked, giving him an almost comically big thumbs-up.
He looked a little... flustered?

Honestly the weirdest part was just seeing someone teaching his class. He had had subs before but he'd never actually been there for any of them. Also, this one didn't exactly look fully human so there was a little more intimidation factor here.

He mentally set his bag down across the chair by his desk and smiled a little at her attempt at sign. It was a slightly confused, dorky, "what's going on here" smile, but it was a smile. Soren had met some real asshole deaf people, he could tell you. The ones who berated hearing people for trying to sign, or made fun of new people- he had to learn it as a newly deafened 10 year old in a family full of hearing people. He wasn't exactly the "inclusive" demographic like a CODA, someone born deaf, or someone born to an interpreter. He signed back and was half way through "Did I ask for the wrong day" before she thumbs up'ed.

Once she gave the thumbs up it was like a dam opened. Before there was this restricted feeling- the one he'd always felt before having his power. It was like those dreams where you open your mouth to scream but nothing comes out and no one sees you. "Oh god did I mess up and ask for today? It's the 13th and I asked for the 14th, right?" he asked quickly in his head, in a little bit of a panic. If anything the panic made his accent more pronounced- a little more New York than normal.

So, yes, her signage was obviously outdated or broken somehow, because as soon as Soren spotted her hands, he smiled in this cute way that did something to Falina. She couldn't place what, but something had happened. It was a cute, dorky little smile. Kind of confused. Shooting him an apologetic smile, she tucked her hands into her (nonexistent) pockets (she just noticed - this pair didn't have any pockets, and so she coolly hid her hands behind her back in one, fluid motion.). No more signing - especially now that she had thumbs-up'ed him. A sudden, New-York accented voice sounded within her mind - it was no doubt Soren's. Fortunately, though she wasn't the best at signing, she could understand what Soren had been telling her before, and shook her head, her twintails bobbing along with her head and giving the man in front of her a peek at her ears.
"Probably," she thought at him. "Then again, I didn't look at a calendar today, so it might be that fact. What day is it?" Her eyes flitted from Soren's to the walls of the classroom and then back, probably asking herself in her mind where the date would be.
"By the way, I'm Falina Deaux." A polite but friendly nod.
Hopefully, the other teacher could still hear her thoughts as she walked back up to the board, erasing her name in another quick, fluid motion.

Aw that was cute in a way- the way she hid her hands when she realized there were no pockets as if she meant to do it. He kept smiling despite the fact that the time for that was over. By the time he caught himself being awkward he was sure that his students would make fun of him for having a crush by the next class period.

Soren took his phone out of his pocket and clicked the backlight on. "Yeah it's the 13th." he looked a little relieved that he hadn't been the one to mess up- and also that it wasn't the next day and he wasn't missing his doctor appointment because he himself forgot what day it was. The obvious anxiety of a new, undetermined situation left him a little. Soren seemed to calm down to his normal meeting-people-anxiety self.

"Oh. Nice to meet you Ms. Deaux." Was he blushing? Probably. From the anxiety or just from her no one could really tell. He'd blame it on the run here and that was believable enough.

Wait what ears? He knew there were animal people around here- he forgot what they were called- but Soren was too new and too very human to really understand all the differences yet. He just never said anything for fear of sounding... uh.. racist? There was probably a term he was looking for but he didn't quite know what it was yet. He made a note to ask Valli about it later.

"Yeah so I needed you tomorrow." he said with another apologetic look and awkward laugh.

With a smile, she turned back to him, nodding. "I wasn't wrong - I was just on a different day," she decided, ears twitching a bit. Sure, a minor slipup - but still, he had needed her - even if it was a day later. Curious, that it was the 14th. Looking Soren - or should she have addressed him as Mr. MacLeod? That seemed to be a bit more fitting, since they were colleagues - up and down once more, she concluded that yes, he was starting to relax a little bit. To let himself go a bit.
"Same here, S - um, Mr. MacLeod. Forgive me for the early appearance, then - you could say I was eager to teach." She knew a blush when she saw one - though, it could have been from his run here, or the nerve-wracking encounter with literally a demon. A Pride demon, at that.
His gaze flickered up to her twintails, and she gave off a short but friendly laugh. "Those are my ears. I'm... well, I'm not quite human, you know." She gave him a secretive grin. "Wanna feel? They're nice and soft."
Oh, right. There was a class here.
"In that case," she thought at him, striding over to the group of empty seats near the door and promptly plopping herself into one, "I'm going to sit in for a lesson, learn how you do things."

"You can just call me Soren I don't mind. I'm not all about that academia BS." He shrugged a little. He was sure his students were questioning what was going on, being that they could only hear him and not her. He was the one with the telepathy, so all communication had to run through him. Students could typically talk to themselves or ask questions out loud as long as they also thought the questions at him as well, that way the other students were in on the conversation.

"Wanna feel? They're nice and soft.

Oh shit. He went completely red for a second, managing to tone it down after a minute or so. He wasn't sure why he was red, maybe from being called out or maybe because he didn't realize he was staring. Soren was positive the class was wondering now. "Oh uhm, maybe later?" he replied awkwardly, adjusting his sleeves above his elbows where he had them rolled up.

"Uh- okay- yeah that's fine. Are you sure?"

"Alright, then, Soren," she thought at him, adding a little smirk at the end. "I'll sit here and listen in on the lecture, if that's okay." Like before, there was a casual yet mature tone to her voice, although it contrasted sharply with her pigtails and her swinging her legs under the table she was sitting on. The class must have known something was going on between them - probably communication - but that begged the question of whether or not they could hear them, or more accurately, if they could hear her. Some students snickered, and she turned her head to look at them, a quizzical expression ready. No one told her, but as she looked back around, Falina noticed that the teacher she'd offered her ears to go an amazing shade of red. He'd held this for a few seconds, she realized, and raised a hand to her mouth, giggling. It seemed as if she'd made Soren blush with her offer. That, or she'd called him out for looking at her ears. Which was fine, she guessed. It's not like he was looking at her tail, dutifully hidden.
The whole conversation, she had thought at him - she hadn't really spoken much. So, she turned to face the class.
"I'm going to be sitting in on the class, to learn for tomorrow. Don't mind me - Mr. MacLeod's back, so." Failna shrugged, then hopped off the desk to grab a chair.
Oh, this was going to be fun.

Soren took a deep breath an cleared his throat, trying to ignore her as he started his lecture. He'd prepared this before and had given it before, so it shouldn't be that difficult to space out.

"Okay, so today we're talking about telepathy and the types of telepath before we start practical defenses. Make sure to take notes. There are different ways to defend against each." he started, picking up a marker and making two large ovals on the top of the board. Left handed. Nice. "There are two main types of telepathy. Focused and unfocused." He wrote the two words in the bubbles, making a few exrta marks here and there to connect the bubbles. He looked over his shoulder and watched at least half the class doing the same in their notebooks.

He nodded to himself, looking at the board before looking at the class again. "Focused telepathy means the telepath only 'hears' things they're listening for. I typically just listen for things related to me. It's like a filter. So I don't have to listen to all the no doubtedly illegal things you all did over the weekend, I just answer when you call me." He made an arrow under 'focused' and wrote 'filtered', and 'selective hearing'.

"Unfocused telepathy means they telepath hears everything. I'm going to out myself and say that I use this when I'm facing away from the class, or when you all have a test going and I need to make sure no one's cheating. We hear everything whether we want to or not. Anything you think loudly enough, we hear. For instance I most definitely heard one of you comment on how good my butt looked in my new pants when I was pulling the projector screen down last class. Not naming names, but you know who you are, and thank you." A redhead in the back row went as red as her hair, and began furiously taking notes. "The telepaths who are exclusively unfocused are pretty much the TV tropes you hear about where the person is hearing so many voices they black out, or faint, or get a nosebleed or something. Movies. Trust me it does get overwhelming fast." He made an arrow under 'unfocused' and wrote 'unfiltered', 'crowded'.

"Focused telepathy and unfocused telepathy are both something that most experienced telepaths can do. They can switch between them. Those who can do both typically have their telepathy brought on by a traumatic event or necessity, while those who can only do one or the other were generally born with the ability." Most of them knew that his ability was definitely brought on by a traumatic event- getting hit by a drunk driver and going deaf would qualify as 'traumatic'. A few students looked between themselves awkwardly before looking back down. Soren didn't notice or maybe didn't care.
