I hate the way I feel inside...

Mery paid the cab driver and got out. She hurried into the school, tripping over her shoes again. She vowed never to wear high heels. EVER AGAIN. She went to her dorm room and changed into sweats and a baggy sweatshirt.

What was he thinking? Why did he have to be so utterly PIG HEADED? She picked Pooka up and carried him into the lounge, not really wanting to stay in the dorm room. She figured that if anyone came looking for her, they'd look in the dorm first. She sat down on one of the couches and stroked the dogs furry head.

She was so angry with Nicolas. Why did he have to punch her uncle? He hadn't done anything wrong. She put her hand on her stomach and continued brooding silently.

Pooka licked her hand. Mery pushed his nose away and wiped her hand off. She wasn't in the mood for being comforted.

He couldn't just let them keep fighting like this. It was torture. Even so, he still didn't think he was wrong. He didn't want to be the first to apologize — she didn't understand, and he shouldn't have to apologize until she understood!

But she probably wouldn't.

And he couldn't really stay angry at her for not understanding. That wasn't fair.

Nicolas stood up from his place outside and walked into the school building. He had gotten a bouquet of flowers and chocolates to apologize to her, since he knew that he would end up losing in the end anyway. The seventeen-year-old entered the academy, looking around. He went to her dorm room and knocked on the door as best as he could since his arms were full, but there was no answer. "Mery?" No answer, obviously. After a while more of hearing absolutely nothing at all and receiving no answer, he sighed, shoulders slumping. Either she was making a great deal of effort to ignore her husband, or she just wasn't there. He actually hoped it wasn't the latter... since he wanted her to be somewhere and he wanted her to be safe.

Stepping into the lounge, shoulders still slumped and sad, golden eyes cast downward, Nicolas walked toward one of the couches. Of course he had to come where he and the love of his life had first met.

He looked up briefly, and in doing so, spotted her. He smiled, glad she was safe and sound, and walked over to her.

"I'm sorry..." he said, knowing that wouldn't be enough, but at least it was a start.

Mery groaned inaudibly. She wasn't ready to talk to him yet. How could she be? Uncle George hadn't done anything wrong. If anyone were to blame it should have been her mother. Even so, Nicolas didn't need to get violent. Or yell at her. THAT was totally uncalled for.

She folded her arms and looked away, clenching her jaw so that she wouldn't start yelling at him again. She didn't want to speak to him, and she definitely didn't want to fight again.

Pooka just yipped happily at Nicolas.

Silence.... she had said nothing to him, absolutely nothing. Nicolas face became even sadder as he began to think that what he had done was wrong. He shouldn't have used violence, but that psychiatrist had just been ticking him off and he couldn't restrain himself. It was enough that he had gone against his morals and had ruined his brother's wedding, but now this? It was their first fight... it couldn't go on this long, it was tearing him up inside.

The young man looked at Pooka as he yipped, but didn't offer a change of expression or say anything. Nicolas looked down again, remaining silent. He wasn't going to talk and talk only to wind up wasting his breath. He had to give her her space, too, and speaking may only infuriate her more.

Mery sighed. She had at least expected him to say something. She didn't want to be angry with him, but he was so darn exasperating, it was hard not to be. She glanced over. She hated the sad expression on his face. And those stupid puppy dog eyes. She cleared her throat.

"...So...um...is...Sabriel...doing okay?" She said slowly, not wanting it to sound like she was trying to apologize or anything. She just couldn't stand not talking to him any more.

"...So...um...is...Sabriel...doing okay?"

Yay, she had spoken! She didn't entirely hate him! Nicolas hesitantly returned his gaze to her, shrugging his shoulders gently. "I guess he is," the young man said softly. His arms were getting tired from holding her gifts for so long, even if they were small. He could truly be a little weakling sometimes. "How's your uncle?"

He had sounded apologetic on that last statement, but he didn't care. He had already apologized, after all.

Mery brushed away the remainder of her tears. She sniffed. "I really wouldn't know. I haven't seen any of them yet." She said, adding thank goodness silently in her head. Now that she'd finished yelling at Nicolas, her mother was in for it. Big time.

She looked down at her hands, not knowing what else to say. She chewed on her lower lip. "Um..." She paused. Well, he had already apologized, so she supposed it was her turn. "I'm sorry, Nic." She said softly.

"I'm sorry, Nic."

He smiled softly and took a seat next to her, though still giving her some space... just in case. "It's ok," Nicolas told her, having accepted her apology. He held out the flowers and the box of chocolates for her. "I was the one that was wrong, though. So it's alright."

Mery smiled back and took the chocolate and flowers. "Thank you. They're lovely." She opened the box of chocolate and held it out to him. "Want one?" She asked. She suddenly felt very naseaus. "Um. I'll be right back." She said.

Nicolas was about to deny the chocolates when she suddenly mentioned that she would be right back. "You alright, hon?" he asked, wondering if she was sick or something. She wouldn't avoid him now that they had made up... right? The young man blinked, looking at her and hoping she was fine.
