Jacob only needed to hear the sounds of wet footsteps behind him to know that one or more fishmen had managed to get around behind him, blocking off their route up the stairs. He could feel Lenn at his back, facing down those new attackers, while he stared down the ones encroaching from his direction. It was a dire situation. They were outnumbered and surrounded. Jacob was a sub-par fighter without his sword and Lenn, for all of her own abilities, was still injured. While Jacob was not about to just give up, he did feel his heart sink when faced with the odds before him.
One fishman screeched from behind him, and heard the sounds of combat behind him. Lenn was engaged in something, but he was unable to turn around and see it. He had his own attackers to deal with. One lunged forward, swiping at Jacob. He dodged to the side, still suffering a slice across his shoulder. The adrenaline pumped hard and he felt himself dip momentarily into his Zone. Time slowed and he countered with a swipe with his own trident, catching the fish man in the throat. But just as fast as his abilities kicked in, they faded back out and he was nearly stumbling up the stairs as Lenn cleared the way.
Retreating was a better option than continuing to fight. He hurried up the stairs behind Lenn, clutching his bleeding shoulder. A part of his mind, for some reason, chose to note that now his OTHER shoulder might have a scar of its own to match the bullet scar on the other.
They managed to get up the stairs with the fish men chasing them. Once on the proper floor, several teachers were calling out for the two of them. They were peeking out from behind a pair of metal security doors.
"There! Just get in there!"
Jacob pushed Lenn to get into the section of the school behind the security doors instead of fighting. The teachers held the doors open long enough only to get them inside, and they slammed it shut in the face of the fish men. Teachers and students piled on the door to try and hold it close.
"Here! I got this!"
He slipped the trident through the handles, creating a makeshift locking bar for the door. It looked like it might hold for the time being. Everyone backed away from the thudding doors and the sounds on the other side.
"Get the kids back! Get ready in case they get through!"
