Haskell B. McGuillan
19 / 7th November / Male / Human / Student, College, First year / Necromancy & Dark Arts

Appearance Description:
Standing at 5'9, Haskell is a relatively tanned figure with a relatively bulky man with dark, relatively long curls that are tied into a man bun. Although he has a mix of Asian and European ancestry, his features leans towards a more Asian look with dark brown eyes and hair. His only defining Caucasian aspects are facial complexions, where his nose is a bit rounded but protruded and longer jawline, though he remains predominantly Asian, appearance-wise.

Always fond of the darker shades of colour, Haskell enjoys wearing black outfits that fits his more introverted and quiet personality. When outdoors, he will don a hooded cloak.

Personality Description:
Although Haskell is more of the quiet introvert type, he enjoys exploring the world on his own, gradually increasing his knowledge on all things around him. His time studying necromancy has given him an appreciation for those who have died, and how they remain in service to the living even in death. With that being said, Haskell's indulgence in necromancy warped his sense of humanity, and no longer saw the bounds between life and death; even if people die, they can be brought back to life, and therefore are not truly dead. Such is the beauty of the Dark Arts. What is good or evil in the world where moral dilemmas are judged by those with power? The only thing that has any meaning at all is what people as individuals give to them, he thinks.

As a bookworm, he likes to spend a lot of his time shuffling through scrolls and tomes in his own quarters or in the library, but as a result he does not interact much with his peers and finds it hard to make friends due to his socially awkward nature. Wielding a sharp tongue, he does not hesitate to express his own opinion on anything, and is largely biased towards his own thoughts on any matter. A bit too straightforward for many people, and a tad arrogant for his own good. Compounding all of this together, he finds it hard to open himself up to strangers and to trust anyone other than himself.

Despite these personality flaws that plagues Haskell, he means well to those he cares about, and although he is the epitome of a shut-in that is consumed by books and readings, the experience of the social life beyond the walls of books are something he has yet to understand fully. However, past experiences have not bode well for him, and while he certainly would be considered a more eccentric person by normal standards, Haskell is good-natured, upstanding and somewhat naive; only logic prevails!

Powers:
Spirit Manipulation
Haskell is able to summon and manipulate spirits of the dead to his bidding. Before he can summon a particular spirit however, he must obtain a personal object that belongs to that person who has already passed away, and must have a deep connection with its former owner. This could also be a person that the spirit is haunting, be it family or friend. Haskell must then exorcise the spirit haunting these objects to drive their spirits out into the open, before entrapping them within a magical gemstone known as "Deus Lapis", or Godstones. Demons are much harder to handle, and therefore Haskell is only able to exorcise them, but not control. Spirits bound to the will of Haskell no longer have the will of their own, and draw their power from the energy and essence of Haskell himself.

Once bound to his will, these spirits can be used in combat to the living and the dead alike. In combat, the spirits can be used to make physical attacks against foes, act as a form of protection against magic and to possess lesser creatures (primitive animals). Summoned spirits are able to channel elemental essence from the world around them due to and based on the Godstones they are contained in. The ruby Godstone, the only type currently within possession of Haskell, allows his spirits to conjure fireballs and flame-type attacks. Magic used by the spirits usually do not cause too much distress to Haskell, but more powerful ones can knock him out for a day or more, depending on how much physical strain was placed on his body (consecutive large-scale fire attacks, for example).

They are able to act autonomously upon being given orders by Haskell, and therefore he does not have to actively participate in combat himself. More direct control requires him to read from a grimoire that allows him to choose what kind of attacks that the spirit will produce.

These spirits are vulnerable to weapons of religious origin and incantations; the Godstones crack when the spirit is hurt, and crumble when it dissipates, thus renders the spirit no longer bound to Haskell and expelled to the realm of the dead. He can only summon two spirits to his aid at a time, any more will drain his psyche and cause fatigue to his body due to the mental power needed to keep the spirits within his direct control.

To make use of this power, he must hold the Godstone in his hand and chant incantations that brings out the spirit into the realm of the living. To protect himself from the spirits, he wears a variety of religious and holy items that keeps spirits at bay, as well as an array of holy books that he uses to fight off more dangerous spirits. Without these items, the risks of summoning a spirit is simply too high, and therefore cannot make use of this power.

Partial Divination
Partial Divination is a power that Haskell uses to obtain memories of a dead person, through a ritual which requires a number of items related to the memory which Haskell seeks to gain. Straightforward in its use, Haskell must obtain objects of strong relevance with connection to the person he seeks to gain memories from, but will require at least a strand of hair or bones of said person.

To carry out Partial Divination, Haskell must draw a ritual circle with a special crimson crafted from the bones of dead animals infused with his own blood. Once the ritual circle is draw, the respective objects are placed around the circle and Haskell must sit dead center in a praying posture. Reading incantations from the book called "Memorias Mortuorum", relevant memories are transferred into his own. Because this power requires immense mental power, it can only be used at least twice a week, with a break of 24 hours in between.

Biography:
Haskell was born and raised as Jarrick Averell in the aristocratic House of Averell, which had deep roots in magecraft. However, after a massive witch hunt by local villagers and townspeople had resulted in the mansion of the family burning down and killing his parents and other family members in the process. Evacuated by his father so that the people would not find him, he was told to never ever mention the name Averell ever again, and instructed to call himself Haskell McGuillan from then on. The surname of his father's close friend and partner. This happened when he was 7 years of age, and had been taken in by his father's friend, McGuillan, soon after he was found hiding in the family barn when McGuillan came to investigate the remains of the mansion.

While now-caretaker McGuillan himself did not know any magic, he kept a library of tomes underneath his cottage house, and had allowed Haskell to indulge himself. Because of his childhood events, Haskell became obsessed with the concept of life and death, as well as the manipulation of life through the use of magic. Thus Haskell invested his time heavily into researching necromancy until he was finally sent to Starlight Academy to realise his passion. Along the way, he had also invested a lot of time into black magic and deadly spells, but was forbidden to make any employ of such knowledge, which was extremely dangerous to both himself and the people around him.

Additional Information:
  • He keeps a ring with a magically-infused ruby given to him by his father. Its actual use isn't really known to him yet, but it glows a lot.
  • He can speak fluent English and Russian, but is slow to study other languages. He has limited knowledge of Mandarin and Japanese, and knows how to read Latin (due to most of his magic tomes being written in Latin).
