Jude hadn't been planning to get in another match so soon, but he wasn't going to turn one down either. Alexis was nice, the match would be friendly, and Galen seemed to be... well, maybe not helping Alexis out, but definitely encouraging him. Alexis had always struck Jude as being a bit sad or closed off. He hadn't gotten to really sit down or talk to him or anything, but he'd always seemed on the verge of cracking.

But he seemed more calm with Galen lurking nearby, and by the time they'd made it to the bench where Summer waited, Jude was in good spirits. Summer was a fairly plain, mousy girl, who looked equal parts nervous and sad. She gave only a slight nod to Alexis, but seemed to offer Galen a bit of a smile, apparently aware he was a Regalia, even if Jude wasn't quite sure how. Maybe she'd met him before.

"Alright, so, the rules go like this. One of us picks a word, and then you draw out lines, one for each letter, like this." He drew out six lines to demonstrate. "Then, you'd guess a letter. If that letter is in the word, I mark everywhere that letter appears, and then you guess again. If it's not in the word, I draw a part of the hangman and you go again. You lose if the hangman is fully drawn, which is after you have ten misses. At any point you can guess the word, but you only get..." Jude paused to consider a moment. "Two chances to guess the word. We'll say the hangman is ten parts, so ten incorrect guesses."

He drew the hangman out, just to demonstrate.

"Winner is whoever had less of the hangman drawn when they managed to guess the word, or whoever had most of the word filled in when they failed. Do you want to guess, or pick a word first?"

Alexis was annoyed how grateful he was feeling for having Galen around. The summer break had been a real low point in his life and apparently karma had saw fit to give him a pact with this spirit who spent most of his time being encouraging and friendly. He had also stepped in a few times when Alexis was getting pissed off or emotional and helped him calm down.

Between Galen himself and the tournament he had been focused on the tournament enough that he wasn't really thinking about having been disowned.

Alexis nodded back at the girl. She seemed to be real quiet and nervous so he just left it at that. He listened to the rules and nodded. Galen stood off behind him and patted him on the shoulder. Alexis was torn between wanting to shrug his hand off and wanting it to stay there. He decided to just leave it be. "I think I get how to do it. Are these just any random english words?"

He wasn't the most intelligent person but even he could figure out that using other languages would make it really, really hard to guess the word. Especially if he didn't speak the language used. "I'll guess first."

"Oh right," Jude said. "English only, no names or proper nouns. Things you could find in the dictionary."

He wasn't going to be one of those people and come up with a ridiculous word or anything like that.

He paused a moment to think, and then drew six quick lines on the paper.

"Take a guess."

Alexis put on a determined face even though games that required intelligence were definitely not his strong suit. Galen was well aware of that too, which meant that he could tell Alexis was doing this despite the fact that he knew he probably wouldn't win.

Alexis started off by guessing a bunch of vowels but only got the letters "o" and "i". After that he continued to get more and more agitated as each letter he guessed added another body part to the hangman's gallows. In desperation at his final guess he balled his fists and guessed "z" but still had no luck. With nothing else to go on Alexis stared at the stupid blanks for a minute before letting out a frustrated noise. "Fuck, I don't know. I don't even have any guesses for that."

At the outburst Galen moved in closer and patted Alexis on the shoulder and the boy stopped to take a breath. "Fine, fine. My turn to think of a word."

Jude felt kind of bad. Okay, definitely bad. He'd beaten Malara, and now he'd almost definitely beaten Alexis, and he felt... okay, a bit guilty.

Well, technically he hadn't won yet.

"If I can't guess your word, we can just play again until someone gets it, basically," Jude said. "I kind of picked a tricky word."

Then he leaned forward slightly, waiting to see what Alexis would pick.

Alexis probably wasn't going to win this but at least he could try to stump Jude. Not that he really knew how to do that. He wracked his brain for the hardest words he could think of... and still spell correctly. Nothing seemed to fit and before long he felt like he couldn't even think of any words at all. He was too frustrated.

His mind bounced around for a bit until he remembered Galen's hand on his shoulder and he took another breath. With that he finally had some inspiration and picked his word. A six-letter word just like Jude's had been.

After setting it up he let Jude make his guesses. The guy was really good. He seemed to have some sort of method for this that totally escaped Alexis. In the end though he was only able to reveal 3 letters before his drawn body was also hanging form the noose.

Jude just had two guesses for the word. "_ U N _ E R"

Jude had a perfect memory. If he'd read a word, he knew it. But that didn't mean he was a supercomputer. He couldn't calculate actually the ideal letter to pick was E, but Giltenn could, and Jude had to mentally swat Giltenn away a few times to keep them from correcting.

"Okay," Jude said. "It's not bunker or hunker. So, uh... Junker? Or... Lunker?" Did Lunker even count? It was kind of informal.

Alexis' inspiration had come because of the comforting touch he had felt from Galen. It reminded him of being really little and helping his father out in the yard with the old beat up trucks they seemed to collect and repair until they finally couldn't run anymore. He hadn't actually been doing much to help but he had held the flashlight and his dad had patted him on the shoulder and said he had done a good job.

Not all of his memories with his parents were bad. Just the more recent ones. Ever since he had started going on raids with the family and going to school with the humans. It had been downhill since then. Alexis blinked a few extra times at the memory but figured he probably covered that up enough that maybe Jude didn't notice. Or maybe he did, Alexis wasn't exactly great at hiding how he was feeling apparently.

At any rate, yes the word had been "Junker"

Alexis sighed heavily. "Nope, you got it with that first guess. It was junker. I guess you win the challenge Jude." He swallowed and brushed his now-unclenched hands against his pants to dry them before offering a hand to shake. Something he really didn't do often.

Jude had sort of noticed. More like... suspected. But he hadn't seen for sure, and he sure as hell wasn't going to bring it up. Not when Alexis was so... well, he was a little bit beaten down.

He definitely needed to stop picking such hard words.

"I picked Joking, for the record," Jude said, taking Alexis's hand and giving it a firm shake of his own. "The J and the K are kind of hard to get, honestly. It's a bit of a mean word." So really, it wasn't his fault per say. It was just that Jude had picked a hard word, right?

He was definitely trying to make it less of a loss.

"You did well," Summer said, speaking up for the first time. She scooted over a bit, leaning over to check over the page. "Even if he won, it's nice to see someone willing to keep going. You were gracious, even in defeat."

Alexis shook Jude's hand with a firm grip right back. Maybe a little more firm than was necessary. Not enough to hurt of course, but maybe using a little more of his strength than he meant to. "Don't think it really matters how hard it was to get those letters. I'm not... great at being smart," he admitted. Though it was kind of a downer thing to say Alexis was forcing himself to hold his head up and look Jude in the eye. "I'm better at doing things than thinking about them anyway."

Why the hell was he telling Jude that? It wasn't a secret, but there was no need to get all whiny. He had lost to someone better at the challenge than him. It was no different than losing a fight to someone stronger, faster or better than him.

He glanced at Summer and paused, as if he didn't know what to say. Finally he simply replied by saying "Thank you." It was simple and he really meant it, even if it seemed like he wasn't used to saying those words. "But you don't need to try to make me feel better. This isn't the first time i've lost something. At least this one won't leave me healing bruises or broken bones for weeks," he added and pulled himself back into a visage of quiet determination, more or less. There were plenty more challenges to take part in. As he had said to Destra days ago, losing a fight didn't matter anymore. He wasn't proving himself to his family. He was learning things for himself. Even if his emotions were all over the place.
