TIME JUMP!

A few nights later, Nikki was visited by insomnia once more. This time because she had had another nightmare. But this one had been different. Somehow, Donovan had managed to show up in her dream. She woke up before she knew what he was going to do, but it gave her something to do besides watch a movie.

'Donovan,' she wrote on the pad of paper she had rested against her knee. She shifted her position on the lounge couch so that it would be more comfortable to write, 'I just wanted to let you know, that you didn't hurt me. I don't know whether this'll make you feel better or not, but I didn't let you close enough for you to hurt me. If you were talking about my arm, it was my fault, and totally preventable on my part, so forget it.

I was having a weak moment. Memories from my past had resurfaced, and it made me too vulnerable for my own liking, which made me lash out at you. So I'm sorry,'
she paused, forcing herself to write the last few words, 'and I think I'd like to try and be your friend.
-Nikki'

"Now how the heck am I supposed to get this to him?" she muttered aloud, glancing around, as though she'd see something that would give her insight.

Donovan walked down the hallway awakened once again. This time not because of his roomate, but because he'd been dreaming, no. Not dreaming. It was a nightmare. Nikki was there and it was a sea of men cloaked in black. She was being attacked by them. He reached out to her, called to let him help her but she just smiled at him and walked back into the sea of darkness as he was forced to watch as she was torn to pieces. He'd woken in a sweat and had quickly pulled on a pair of jeans and walked down the hallway. So now he was shirtless and shivering trying to find something to do that would wipe the terrifying nightmares from his mind.
He reached the door to the lounge and realized that there was a light on. He leaned against the door frame and put a hand over his eyes trying to block out the light. He didn't want to walk into the darkness but he wasn't prepared for light yet, either.
When he finally looked up he saw Nikki and all he could see was that terrifying grin.
He was at a loss for words.
Uh...hi...?
Wonderful. A novelist is born.

Nikki glanced up, and blinked at the sight, unable to keep the surprise from her face. "Donovan. Hi." she said quietly, using his name as though to remind herself that he was real, and it wasn't a dream. Then she blushed, moving her eyes from his face to the little note she'd just written for him. 'now would be a really good time to give this to him.. but now I'm not so sure I want to. Why do you have to be so stupid Nikki?' she thought to herself, and then resolved not to give him the note.

She tore the page from the note pad, and crumpled it in her hand, as a distraction of sorts, she glanced at him again, "Why aren't you wearing a shirt?"

She knew that if he thought about it, it wouldn't make sense, since she hadn't thrown the large hoody over herself this time, and was rather regretting it, since the lounge was cold tonight. A camisole and a pair of silk pj pants aren't going to do much to keep you warm. But she hoped he wouldn't think about that, nor about the piece of paper she was trying to nonchalantly hide in her hand.

Donovan looked down at his shirtless state and shrugged. He walked over and sat in the couch opposite Nikki and watched her crumple the paper. It had only been a few days but it felt like a long time since they had argued and he barely remembered what she looked like. He noticed she wasn't wearing that much and refrained from making his usual semi-crude comment.
So...um...how've you been? he asked and fidgeted completely uncomfortable...a first for him. He could be confortable as the only human at an "Aliens that Hate Humans" convention.

Nikki cocked her head to the side. He was uncomfortable. "I've been," she caught herself, and decided to tell him the truth, "I've definately been better." Well, not the whole truth. Not the nightmare thing or anything like that. She looked at the crumpled piece of paper in her hand, and resolve set into her face. "Look, this is kinda awkward for me, 'cause I wasn't planning on having you read it with me around, but, well," she uncrumpled the paper, "this is for you." She held the paper out of him, and once he took it, she retracted her hand. "There's one thing I forgot to write in there. Thank-you, for what you tried to do the other night."

Then she shifted her eyes away from him, and began to doodle.

Donovan took the note and started to read it. He smiled when he got to the part about wanting to his friend but then crumpled it up again and threw it over his shoulder.
He sat there for a few moment just looking at her doodle. He could make a total jerk of himself right now...or he couldn't. He never made these decisions well...he always joked about things but maybe he should be more serious around Nikki.
He got up and walked over to the couch sitting down next to her.
I was sleeping. he said answering her question about his shirtless state.
He took the notepad out of her hands and looked at the doodles. He let out a chuckle and handed it back to her.
Cute. So. What makes you want to be my friend? he asked, throwing it in there rather nonchalantly.

Nikki glanced up at him, almost opening her mouth to protest when he took the doodles from her hands, but bit her tongue, chosing not to speak.

She took the pad of paper back from him, flipping the cover back over the front deftly. Then she glanced up, and smiled. "Well, to be honest, I have no idea. But I do think we got off on the wrong foot the other night, I mean, I was thinking you were pretty cool right up until you kissed me." she smirked lightly, cocking her head while still looking at him, "But like I said, I was having a lot of trouble that night. That, is a side of me that you won't lightly see."

She looked down at her cast and chuckled. Tons of people had signed it. The friends who only saw the bright, bubbly, cheerful Nikki. She pulled her legs up onto the couch, shifting herself into a perched position. "To be honest, I feel like I might be able to trust you." she added seriously, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, smiling lightly.

Donovan sighed and stood up, he walked away from her. He paced near the doorway his face very serious.
I know this would happen...my charms were just too much for you... he said and sighed again stopping and facing her.
Nikki. he said his eyes looking sad his voice stony.
I understand that deep down inside you love me, but really we must remain friends. he said and then cracked a smile at her.

When she said it was a side that he wouldn't see lightly, she wasn't kidding. As a matter of fact, now that she knew that he was a joker, she didn't take it to heart. Instead, she nodded. "Yes, I'm afraid it's true. But we must," tears filled her eyes on que, "Yes we must hold out. And remain friends," with a very theatrical flop backwards, back of her hand against her forehead, words over exaggerated, like those from a soap opera, "forever."

Then she sat up and grinned at him, the tears miraculously disappearing from her eyes. Her eyes sparkled with her grin, and she moved her position so that she was sitting crosslegged. She looked up at him with a childish look on her face, "There is one," she held up her finger to enunciate, "condition to this friendship. If I look sad, don't kiss me, or I swear, I will try to kill you." her words would have packed more of a punch, has she not looked very much like a seven-year-old on a sugar high.

Donovan walked over and sat down on the couch his face was still stony but also there was a grin on his face. He sat down and grabbed her hands in a comforting manner. He stopped smiling and sighed then he said.
Okay, no more sad kisses. he said and leaned forward and kissed her forehead.
He quickly dropped her hands and put his in front of his face.
That doesn't count, that was a happy kiss! he said and by the sound of his voice you could tell his had a smile on his face.
