The sun was just starting to creep up above the horizon as Adalwolf finished staking down the ropes that held the tent top over the last of the festival booths. This one was striped blue and gold, with the Academy logo emblazoned on each side. All around, the smell of festival food beginning to cook filled the air and conversations grew in volume in time.with the sun's ascent.

These were moments he appreciated, if not enjoyed, exactly. The weather was looking to be fair for most of the Festival, if not just the entire thing. And it was pleasant, seeing the community rally together for such a cheerful event. Not like the nonsense that had permeated so many public events recently.

He still wasn't sure what the booth set up for the academy actually was. It almost looked like a game. With tickets and prizes all around. But there were no typical games to be played. Instead there were recycling bins for all the usual materials: metal, plastic and paper, as well as a trash can.
Hopefully, Dr. Sable, the one who had more of a hand in planning this, would be able to explain it to him.

Speaking of, where had she gone off to?

Dr. Marina Sable
For such a happy occasion, Marina was decidedly serious. In other words, she was a bit grumpy. For that reason, she had left her booth momentarily for a coffee run. She didn't expect to make it through the day without her little caffeine burst. She had hoped that she could get her nectar and return before her absence was noticed but once she arrived at the coffee stand, she realized that was not going to happen. It seemed like everyone had the same idea so there was a line about eight people long that she would have to suffer through. He would be fine without her, she rationalized. After all, most of it was already done. She just had some minor things to accomplish before the booth would officially be up and running. There was still some time before the festival officially opened as well so she figured she could get away with a bit of a break. To compensate, she decided she'd bring him a coffee as well. She had no idea what Adalwolf would want in his coffee or if he even liked it in the first place, however.

If he didn't like it, then she would just drink his.

It took about ten minutes for the line to clear out and for it to finally be her turn. For someone waiting for a caffeine fix, that felt like an eternity. When she could finally make her order, she decided on a monstrosity of a coffee that probably contained twice her daily value of sugar and then a black coffee with cream and sugar on the side for her booth-mate. She figured, as long as he didn't vehemently hate coffee, he would appreciate it.... hopefully. If not, his loss, she supposed.

After a few more minutes, the spindly female made her way back over to the booth. Balanced in one hand was Adalwolf's coffee, with little packets of cream and sugar arranged on the lid, and her own coffee in the other hand. She didn't believe in cup carriers.

Once Mari finally returned (at this point, absent for 20 minutes), she would offer the precarious sculpture to the scout. Her bright lips were twisted into a small smile that somehow looked unnatural paired with her features. Vampires weren't meant to grin, she supposed.
"Here, I brought you some coffee. I had no clue what you'd want so go wild. If you hate it, just dump it into a plant or something when I'm not looking," the raven-haired female would explain, chuckling a bit at the end of her own joke.

This whole festival was a cute idea. She was hoping that the school's booth was going to take off. She couldn't wait to award the grand prize to someone. Community development-wise, it was going to be great.

Like the soldier he was, Ada didn't leave the booth. He would have manned the whole thing himself, making it up as he went along despite not knowing even what he was supposed to be doing. Fortunately, his partner was arriving from upwind.

Ada turned when he smelled Mari approaching. He had learned her scent, working with her since she arrived on the island. She was also accompanied by the distinct smell of coffee, which made him perk up more.

"Ah! Dr. Sable. There you are. I was beginning to think I may have to go hunt you down."

He took the offered coffee and gave a short, polite nod. "Danke sehr, Ärztin. I appreciate the gesture. And I enjoy coffee as much as anyone." He took the precariously balanced creamers off of the lid and set them down on the booth table before bringing the cup to his lips. He didn't like things that were too sweet, and he had long ago learned to appreciate the taste of plain black coffee.

Ada pulled off his coat, leaving his long sleeved undershirt on underneath. It was going to get warm, and he didn't need any extra layers making it worse. He draped the coat over the back of a chair before returning his attention to Marina and his drink.

"So what exactly are we doing with all of this? I must admit I have been preoccupied of late and have not had the opportunity to read the related literature to our booth."
Again. It looked like the prizes display of a game booth, only without the game. Unless the recycling bins somehow were the game. He had still come out to help, regardless. It was a good cause, and got him out of the rut he had been in of late. It seemed like lately, all Adalwolf did was work and spend time with his Beute.

It was also a good chance to really get to know his coworker. She had been with the school for a handful of years now, bit their different jobs led to neither of them interacting in any meaningful capacity. He could tell she was very community minded, or at least took her job quite seriously. Either way, it was a demeanor he could appreciate and respect.

If Ada had really needed to hunt her down, she got the feeling that he would've had no trouble at all. Once he had taken his cup from her hand, she would take the opportunity to raise her own drink to her mouth and take a sip. Sweet with an end-note of bitter, that was what she enjoyed. However, she could appreciate the allure of black coffee - coffee itself could have a lot of different distinct flavors. Unfortunately, she just couldn't down it.

For a moment, Mari checked over her shoulder to see the status of the other booths. At this point, it looked like most of everything else was already set up. Many of the little tents had two or more people sitting in them or people discussing things. As soon as the sun fully rose, she imagined she would see an influx of early-risers come over the hill and enter the park. It was a good day to start this off and, personally, she was fairly excited.

Her attention was jerked back to her own sphere when she heard Ada speak once more. She hadn't realized she had spaced out while perusing her own thoughts.

"Oh, yes. I should have mentioned that earlier," she immediately replied, chuckling a bit once more. Even if he had read the pamphlet, he probably still would've had questions. It was rude of her to forget to mention. Ah well, he didn't seem to mind. Taking a seat on her designated chair, she would begin her, perhaps unnecessarily long, explanation of the booth's function.

"Alright, well. I've taken to calling this the 'Trash Dash' booth. If you like that, we'll keep it. The goal is, essentially, to minimize the amount of work the cleanup crew has to do at the end of the festival once we're all out of here as well as teach the students and the community how to do their part in keeping places like this park clean. We want people to be running around the festival, grabbing as much trash as possible, and bringing it back here to deposit. There's no value added to whether something is big or small, all that matters is quantity."

"We have trash cans and recycling for glass, metal, plastic, and paper. We also have plastic gloves and little handheld brushes and dustpans to hand out to people who choose to participate. People who want to compete will sign up with their name and phone number but anyone can use our trashcans, of course. You and I will have clipboards and keep track of what contestants drop off what types of trash. About halfway through the last day of the festival, we'll compare sheets and tally up the winner. The winner will earn the title of 'King/Queen Litterfree' and receive our trophy. Let me show you."

She tapered off her explanation to stand up from her seat and rustle around in one corner of the tent. She had it mixed in with the other items for the game for the moment. She was planning to place it on a tall pedestal in the back of the tent so people could see the potential prize and let it motivate them. After a few seconds, she grabbed hold of the base and pulled it out. "Lo and behold, the golden trashcan!" she exclaimed as she held up the figurine. It was, literally, a gold-colored, everyday dumpster. The trashcan was about the size of a roll of toilet paper and the base was roughly a half a foot long and white with gold accents.
"I have an inscription to mount on it as well once we have the winner's name. Anyways, they'll win this, the title of a lifetime, and a Visa gift card, $35 I think. That's pretty much all there is to it. Any questions?" Once Marina finished her tirade, she would place the trophy back in the bag at the back of the tent and return to her seat. She hoped that he would like her game plan. If all went well, they'd be putting on the cleanest festival in the history of festivals.

Ada stared at Marina with his one good eye as she spoke, keeping the other one shut tightly. He nodded with mild enthusiasm as she explained what their booth was about. A clever way to get people involved with cleaning up the park by appealing to their own competitive natures.

"Wunderbar! I like this idea. It is fun, especially for the children, and it promotes the cleanliness of the park."

Taking his own seat next to Marina's, he took his own clipboard and looked it over. Nice, clean, and efficient. He could definitely appreciate this. The Scout nodded and put the clipboard back down on the table. Things were starting to pick up as the sun continued to rise, and no doubt they would be getting their first batch of curious visitors soon.

"No questions, really. Your explanation was more than satisfactory, Doctor. I will need to know when I am afforded a small break however. My human form is not my natural one, and it becomes stifling if I remain in it for too long."

He was sure there would be some vendor at the festival that sold human meat that he could eat. It was just a matter of sniffing it out.

Soon enough though, people were coming to the booth. Ada gave explanations of what they were doing with a smile, handing out the bags and dust pans to those who wished to participate. He also reminded people to be careful with broken glass and sharp metal.
