Dropping the letter on her desk slightly stunned, Zora sat back in her office chair not quite sure she actually believed what it said. She knew Broen had not quite been himself lately and was even slightly more withdrawn than normally. But she had not expected him to up and leave like he had. Not in a million years. And not without saying goodbye.

Staring at the letter on her desk, Zora heard her phone go off. It was a text message. And somehow, she knew, even without looking at it, who it was from. Instinct told her that Broen had done the exact same thing to the only other person of importance in his life - Jude,

Glancing at her phone screen then, Zora swiped to the side and saw the message was indeed from Jude, and this made her even sadder for some reason. Part of her had hoped that Broen had at least confided in one of them. Obviously, that had not been the case.

Texting Jude back then, Zora started cancelling appointments for the day as she asked him to name a time and place that was best for him to meet up, and she would see him there.

@Romi

(Zora will show up where ever Jude wants. I actually wasn't too sure where they should meet. XD )

Angelo had picked a small cafe he'd been to a few times. It was not, mercifully, the same cafe he'd seen Broen get beaten to a paste at. No, he'd made a point of avoiding that particular cafe, because... well, it made him feel weird.

The whole situation sort of did, but he wasn't terribly surprised, either. Broen had always been a wild card. He'd always gone his own way. And even if he'd played it off as having won, the confrontation with his father had absolutely fucked him up.

Angelo didn't doubt that for a moment.

He was already settled in at the cafe, snacking on lunch, as he waited for Zora to arrive.

Upon entering the cafe, Zora spotted Jude's blond head among those already sitting in the cafe. Deciding to get something to eat first, she finally made her way over to the table with a cup of coffee and a toasted bagel with cream cheese on it.

Sitting down across from Jude, Zora gave him a little smile, "Hey there, Angelo. I am guessing this was somewhat a surprise for you as well?" she asked as she placed her food in front of her.

"Unexpected," Angelo admitted almost immediately, taking a bite of his sandwich. "I got a text, for the record, as did everyone from my little group. And then a letter after the fact. Letter was a bit more formal. Text was about the least formal thing I've ever recieved. I guess he didn't talk to you, just left a letter?"

He'd have been genuinely surprised if he'd sat down to talk about it. Broen was not the kind of person who did that sort of thing, and he'd have been even more surprised to learn Broen had actually once gone to therapy.

"Yes, I only got a letter," Zora admitted as she slowly sipped her coffee, not too surprised to hear Broen sent his group of friends a very informal text. She could easily imagine what it said too.

"And if I'm honest, I had no idea he was this...unhappy. Absolutely, none," she said, trying to think back, and yes, there were times he had seemed quieter, a little less interested in things, but not enough that she would have expected him to do something like this.

"Broen's always been unhappy," Angelo pointed out. "Ever since he got to the island. But even before that. He just didn't have the emotional capacity to express it until he got his emotions back. But even then..."

He frowned a bit.

"Honestly, I guess I'm just surprised by the timing. As far as I can tell, nothing set him off - I'd expect there to be a confrontation or something. Something that set him off and pushed him over the edge."

That was, in Angelo's opinion, how Broen was.

"Always?" Zora said raising her eyebrow at Jude's affirmation, pausing then, trying to see her boyfriend objectively, and finally sighing. "You might be right, at least to some extent," she relented. It wasn't a pleasant thought to have to admit that somebody you loved was unhappy on a deeper level.

At the timing comment, Zora frowned. Something was niggling at her ... Could it be? Could the confrontation with Kakeru have been the reason he left? The idea made Zora sick to her stomach to think she might be the reason Broen left.

"Uh, there was an incident a few weeks ago..." Zora admitted uncomfortably."I had a client, well, one of Tomas's old business partners actually, threaten me, and Broen went to talk to him. To lay off me," she told Jude with a very worried look now.

(Sorry took so long, had to work out details regarding the fight and stuff.)

To Angelo, it was obviously an always. How could he not be, with everything he'd been through? He'd been homeless. He'd been taken apart mentally. He'd been abused. His world had died, and he'd ended up on an island without true freedom.

A part of Angelo suspected that was why he'd made the decision to go off island. To remind himself he wasn't confined.

Angelo looked genuinely surprised--and confused--by Zora's explanation of events. One of Tomas's old business partners? And he threatened him? And Broen...

Ugh.

"If he was threatening you, you should have just gone straight to the police." Had Broen insisted?

"The police can't do much here. It's a loan shark from Japan, and it was a veiled threat, nothing tangible. Nothing I can even prove, even people at the restaurant can only confirm they saw him talking to me, but nobody, but his men heard the conversation."

It's a "his word against mine" situation and the debt technically is legal, just the interest accrued isn't," Zora explained. It gave her a headache to even think about it.

"I offered to pay the amount, up until Tomas expired, but they still want the full amount which is somewhere over a billion dollars," she explained with a grimace.

"Broen just wanted them to lay off, and accept my first offer, but ..." here she shook her head. "Now, I don't know. He never really said how it all went down, I just assumed everything was okay...and they'd agreed to accept the initial offer."

Angelo had an increasingly focused look on his face as Zora explained the situation. It was... a mess. The fact that she didn't know how it went down made it seem increasingly likely the situation was the straw that had broken the camel's back in that scenario, and if he hadn't gotten the letter from Broen, he might have genuinely wondered if he'd been kidnapped.

"It's not a legal debt," Angelo pointed out. "The debt would go onto his estate. But you don't inherit his debt. And..."

He paused for a moment, chewing over things in his head. A billion dollars? As she that rich? He'd known she was well off, but a billionaire? And that wasn't even her stuff, just her brothers.

"You shouldn't have touched his stuff at all," Angelo said after a moment. "Wasn't he - you know, a criminal? The money's probably all dirty."
