Colten laughed. "Limited effort necessary or not, you did put in some effort. But if you dont like compliments I could refrain from giving them so freely."

He slid the package Jackal offered to him over and noted the way he seemed to be guiding things to give Colten his 'turn' first. Which ultimately didn't really bother him, he supposed.

Once more the knife from the table was taken in hand to begin opening the second gift from Jackal. "I am indeed a demon, and quite proud of my heritage," he replied and smiled at his double meaning. "In fact I would imagine you found some information about Grovefire and the advocacy and support for demonic citizens here that we provide. Unless you only read about my bestselling novels. I assure you I am quite more than just an author pandering to a select market."

At that point he had finished carefully unwrapping the gift and slowly scanned the contents with his eyes. And he nose. Because the food smelled delicious. Once more his tail began to flick lightly with veiled enthusiasm.

"I trust that these taste as delicious as they smell?"

JACKAL

"Mostly the novels," Jackal admitted. He'd seen Grovefire, but only in passing. In truth, he wasn't really as up to date on demon things as he probably should have been. A part of Jackal didn't really consider himself a demon at all, even if the average person would have inevitably considered him one. He felt like something else, something distinct and unique, and he simply couldn't comisserate with the experience of the average demon.

For one, holy items held no power over him.

"Place I work at does real Russian food. The kind cooked by an old Russian grandmother from old family recipes. They did a whole thing of treats for the holidays, thought it'd be a nice little addition to the book. Everyone likes snacks, right?"

Well, not everyone, and Jackal hesitated after a second, squinting in his direction. "...Assuming you're not purely carnivorous or anything like that." Or a soul eater. Or an energy sucker. There were a lot of weird diets on Manta Carlos, and Jackal was perpetually exhausted from trying to keep track of them all. Maybe food wasn't-

And then, of course, Jackal realized they had met at a restaurant, and he was totally going to be fine.

Colten smiled graciously. "What a wonderful gift. I will have to share some of these treats with my staff. You don't have to worry too much about my diet, I assure you I can eat a variety of things. But that said, I think I will avoid spoiling my appetite for dinner if you don't mind." Not to mention his assistant would surely want to check just to make sure these treats weren't some old-world trick to harm him. Russians were known for shrewd, and dangerous, 'business'.

Jackal didn't have the reputation for underhanded maneuvering so much. But it didn't hurt to be careful. And he was truthfully looking forward to dinner too.

He looked the collection over carefully and then slid them to the side so they would be out of the way. "But I see you have yet to reveal the other gift I gave you. I assure you it's much more interesting without the paper around it," he laughed and nodded for him to go ahead. Better to finish with the formal reason for the meeting before they relaxed for the rest of it.

JACKAL

Considering that the restaurant Jackal worked at was, in fact, a front for the Russian mob... well, Colten's worries weren't exactly unwarranted. Of course they were completely innocent treats, but the idea was there just the same: that there was danger that should be investigated if at all possible.

Jackal wasn't at all bothered that Colten wasn't snacking on it right then, because they were supposed to be eating dinner. Instead, he turned his attention to the last of the gifts, carefully working to unwrap the paper. The whole thing seemed like it was very precise: like if he tore into it, it was liable to fall apart, and as he removed bit by bit of the paper his theory was proven more and more right.

His first impression was that it was a weapon rack, but the more he revealed the more obvious it was that it was anything but.

"A..." Jackal paused, taking in the creation and trying to put a word to it. "Statue?" He couldn't tell if the daggers could be removed or not, and he felt immediately wary of touching it at all, lest the whole thing collapse at the first touch.

The dangerous, carefully arranged sculpture was extremely amusing to Colten. Perfectly safe to handle unless you drew a blade out of it. Then unless you were careful about which knife you drew you could get cut. "I'm afraid just giving you a weapon outright would be frown edupon in public. But an artistic puzzle from which you could choose to retrieve a knife is perfectly fine. I figured it might bring you a little bit of amusement and I assure you the knives are all quite sharp and of excellent quality."

Colten took another sip of his wine, assuming the spitting image of some evil mastermind having revealed their doomsday plan. Except it was just a gift before dinner, and he didn't fancy himself evil despite the demonic bias in his life.

"I would ask that you not draw blood at dinner though. I think that might disappoint some of the other patrons," he laughed and gestured for the waiter to approach with their appetizers.

JACKAL

Malara would definitely love the sculpture, to say the least. His current roommate? Probably not so much. He'd have to ask if she would store it for him, but he couldn't imagine she'd say no. Even if she did technically have kids around... well, there were plenty of places that Dalia wasn't supposed to go, for example.

So Jackal reached out and carefully set the statue to the side. He could think about it (and focus on it) later. Right then, the meal they were about to eat seemed a great deal more interesting. Jackal had found a hard time making new friends on the island, at least among adults, and this was as good a time as any to try.

"I'm curious what made you go into writing," Jackal said, because his work seemed like as good an example as any to start a conversation about. People liked talking about themselves in general terms, but a pride demon? Even more so.

The end of Colten's tail flicked as Jackal asked about his writing. True to his sin, Colten was most definitely quite proud of his accomplishments. He chuckled and paused for a moment to collect his thoughts into a proper answer.

Meanwhile the waiter approached with several plates of appetizers for them, carefully avoiding going near the freaky knife tower.

"How should I explain it? Hmm. Have you ever been so lost in a book you were reading that you felt like you were so fully submerged that real life no longer existed? An entire new world with countless lives and sights and smells, and all born of simple paper and ink. And the spark of creation buried into the work by a masterful author."

Colten took a sip of his wine and began to cut and eat, in a manner very polite and reserved, as he looked to Jackal for his reaction. "I can touch the very souls of thousands of people with the right words written upon a page."

JACKAL

"Well, when you put it that way it seems perfectly sensible." The spark of creation indeed. "You sound like a conductor for the orchestra of the human mind or something like that."

Jackal wasn't half as eloquent as Colten was, and he wasn't even particularly trying. He simply didn't see the point, considering he'd be beaten at all possible sides.

"For that matter, you make it sound like the perfect way to compel people to sin. Or--sorry, are you one of those kinds? I'm not really familiar with the different branches of demon at this point."

Probably a faux pas to talk about it at all, really.

Colten tapped his chin in thought. "I might have been a bit overly dramatic, but I found I had a talent in writing and that I could use it to cause quite the stir among people who read my work." There was nothing inherently wrong in that. And he was, naturally, very proud of each and every work of his. Going out of his way to perfect his craft even if he was most well know as an author of young adult books. A genre filled with... many mediocre options indeed.

He trained an appraising eye on Jackal at the not so subtle implication he was suggesting. His tail curled around the leg of his chair and he shook his head. "I'm not in the business of compelling people to anything. I simply offer and watch as people enjoy my work. Though, between you and me, a great number of people could do with taking a little bit more pride in their daily work." At that point he smiled and returned to politely eating his appetizer.

After a moment though he had a question of his own. "I am curious though, what it is that you are proud of in your life?"

JACKAL

Well, he didn't take too much offense, so that was nice. Jackal wasn't exactly the most polite of people, even if he didn't go out of his way to be rude. It came from a millennia of not having to think about what he was saying, and the relatively short time he'd spent on the island was trying to balance that.

"My work," Jackal said without even thinking, and then reconsidered his answer. "The changes I've made in my life. Being on the island at all meant changing almost everything about who I was, so everything I am here is... newly established. Experimental. Someone told me once that eighty percent of people never really leave their home town, and in that case I'm not even the twenty percent that do. I'm like... the zero point one percent who move to another dimension, start a new life, get a bangin' girlfriend..."

Oh yeah, he had a lot to be proud of. "Probably sounds arrogant when I say it that way, but it's not like it was an easy transition or anything."
