Colten let his tail relax and uncoil from the chair leg, deciding that Jackal wan't going to be difficult about demons needing to revel in sin. He took another sip of his wine and smiled.

"Is it arrogance to be proud of managing to find a way to establish yourself in a new place? I don't know about the last of your listed... accomplishments, but the other two I know well. Colten Morey the Author is only one of many coats I wear- i'm not a hat kind of fellow," he smirked slightly and tapped a single finger against one of his horns. "Grovefire is more than just a home to me, you see. My true legacy should be the work I do helping push for the needs of demonkind to be met here. We tend to have our special interests and complications that not everyone is willing to entertain. Many demons here struggle to adjust and I, and my staff of course, provide resources and a refuge."

He might have been one-upping Jackal by moving the focus from one person's struggles to a whole subset of people's struggles. But what he said wasn't untrue. And he smiled openly with great pride as he spoke of Grovefire and his work with demonkind on the island.

JACKAL

Jackal snorted, raising an eyebrow at that. "No bangin' girlfriend in your life?" It wasn't like it was even possible for Colten to be with someone as attractive as Malara (Jackal had set a particularly high bar in that case), but that didn't stop him from having someone he found attractive.

He listened to the discussion of Grovefire, nodding along at the explanation. He could get that. He could understand that. But he did feel the need to point out a small clarification, in part because so many people made the assumption.

"For the record, I'm not. I can't quite relate to... special interests and complications in that way. Holy stuff doesn't bother me, and I don't have a special feeding method or anything like that."

Jackal was very aware of the fact that he looked like a demon. No one would look at him and assume anything else. But he wasn't, and for him, that mattered.

Colten fixed his shirt collar and then nodded. "I am naturally quite discerning with whom I lay- not that I mean to place my tastes above yours of course. Companionship is a fulfilling goal for sure." And that was probably all he was willing to share on that subject. His tail flicked as their conversation progressed onto the more interesting topics, from his perspective, of demons and special requirements.

He smiled softly and then chuckled. "Everyone has their own special interests and complications. But am I to assume you are really intending to point out that you are not part of demonkind at all? That is of course for you and you alone to decide." It was an interesting thing, determining if someone actually should be considered a demon or not. The variety in demons already present on the island was vast and more arrived all the time.

Ultimately though it mattered very little. Colten would still continue the nice meal and interesting conversation regardless of Jackal's species. Associating only with demons would have been taking things a bit too far.

JACKAL

"Don't consider myself one, no," he said. "More like demon-like. But my particular brand of theology doesn't come with demons at all." The truth was that Jackal was a bit of a cheat about it. If it served his needs, he'd identify as a demon, but the majority of the time he did no such thing.

"I'm a Zabanniya," Jackal explained. He didn't talk about it much, but he wasn't against conversing about it, and Colten seemed like the sort of person who'd be interesting. "We fulfill a similar role as the whole idea of a Christian demon who tortures sinners in hell, only we function differently. There's not as many of us, for one, and we're all considered holy and doing our sacred duty. We're kind of like angels, I guess. Like... sub-angels who have a specific purpose."

So he was from hell, but on the opposite side.

"Feels weird to identify as a demon when I'm not just unbothered by holy stuff, but can actively use it, you know?"

Colten listened to the explanation as he finished his appetizer and slid the plate off to the side. Opting not to interrupt until prompted for his opinion. The end of his tail coiled around one leg of his chair for safekeeping. "Some people to tend to think of demons and angels as two sides of the same coin. In most cases having one without the other as a foil would not work. But with the infinite number of different viewpoints i'm not overly surprised there is a type of holy demon equivalent. Unfortunately Grovefire is more well equipped for those of the more traditional demonic ilk, though we expand our capabilities by the day."

He shrugged. If Jackal wished to not be defined as a demon that was up to him. "Tell me though, is your purpose here something you can share or is a secret most divine that would cause my horns to burn off?" He joked with a smile, fully knowing that perhaps such a thing really did exist. But naturally this wasn't the man or the moment likely to reveal such things so recklessly.

JACKAL

Jackal snorted at both Colten's joke and the mental image of his horns simply catching on fire. The question was easy enough to answer, so Jackal simply did.

"Don't have one," he admitted. "Or not right now, really. I became... disenchanted, I suppose, with how things were in hell. Bored. I'd been there since the dawn of humanity, and I wanted a chance, so I asked and was given leave, on the condition I do good with it. My powers let me... punish those who were wicked, but since coming here they've changed a bit, as has my mission statement. Now, my job is to protect people, if I can. Simple enough, right? And inoffensive. Less likely to kill a stray demon who wanders too close."

Colten nodded at the waiter who then immediately stepped over to refill their drinks, followed shortly by their meals as well arriving at the table. Well, the next of several courses anyway. Fancy dinners and all.

"Yes, I would very much appreciate you not killing stray demons by accident. That would make my own work much more difficult," Colten chuckled as he began to eat slowly and politely. "It would seem we are not too dissimilar in our tasks. Your holy connection and the specifics-aside, of course. If I wasn't concerned that your presence might prove to be a problem for some of my less resilient guests I might have made you an offer to come work for me. Sadly though I suppose that won't be possible. I have heard you are quite capable."
