As an envy demon, Madeline had needs that most people didn't. Or - maybe she didn't even need it, but she benefitted from it so much that she might as well have. Either way - she needed to make people jealous of her.

Now that Shir was her boyfriend, and now that she'd had about a day to think about it, she realized she had an excellent opportunity to stoke some jealousy. That opportunity had two to four legs and a name:

Ava Drakenhardt.

The dragon girl clearly had a thing for Shir. She was sure of it. The Drakenhardt family must have picked up on it too, with how they were talking about Ava and Shir. So this was a sure thing. Madeline had what felt like a perfect plan for bringing it up, too. It was after power classes, but before Madeline had practice with Mystique. She found Ava outside and approached her.

"Hey, Ava! Can I talk to you for a little bit?"

Ava was a bit cranky. Everywhere hurt and she had small burns here and there since some genius had thought that "Hey, she can turn into lava so she doesn't burn, right?". Think fucking again genius! The guy had made a simple excercise into fireball dodging practise and Ava would've beaten the shit out of him if Titus hadn't stopped her. She would've shown them what her lava could do, goddamnit.

Now Ava was just chilling outside, sitting on the grass by the doors. Titus had given her his usual burn cream and Ava was applying it to her face at the moment. She was thinking of asking Titus for some extra lessons if the old man had time. Ava felt like spending some pent up feelings still. Or maybe she could catch Shir and get him to spar a bit.

Ava could smell Maddie before she even looked up. And when she did her face was blank, void of the usual smirk she had. Right now Ava didn't have the energy for it. And she wasn't close enough with Maddie for the demon girl to automatically bring a smile to her face.
"Huh? To me? Well yeah, sure, I got time."
Ava was a bit confused as to what business Maddie had with her. She stood up and crossed her arms loosely, waiting for Maddie to state her business.

Ava looked like she was having a rough day. Maddie almost felt bad about doing this - but she was already committed to doing this. Plus, the way she was going to tell Ava about it, she wanted to make it sound like she was helping Ava out. Maybe she actually was doing kind of a good thing? She wasn't sure.

"So... I know you kinda like Shir," Maddie began. "And I didn't want you to find out about this by asking him out or something, because that'd suck. But... I'm dating him now."

She watched Ava closely.

Ava was too stunned to even react for a moment. She had wondered what Maddie might've wanted and then she blurted out that she knew Ava liked Shir. Not think, or wonder. Knew. Normally that would've annoyed and amused Ava at the same time. But right now it just annoyed her. Because she had absolutely no feelings towards Shir. Not Shir, or Cardinal, or anyone. This whole island had a thing with romantic feelings, or at least that's how it felt.
Ava sighed a bit and shook her head.
"Lemme just make one thing clear. I don't have a thing for anyone, and that includes Shir. He's a friend and that's it, done. Not gonna ask him out now or never. 'Sides, any of that shit ain't real in this age anyway so why bother?"

Now it was Madeline's turn to be surprised and annoyed. She was so sure Ava had a thing for Shir. She would have bet good money on it. Plus, now she wasn't getting her fix of jealousy.

She gave Ava a tight-lipped smile. "Well bless your heart, I guess I shouldn't have been worried about you. Now what do you mean it 'ain't real in this age?'"

That was the part that bothered Madeline the most, actually. The idea that she was just being young and dumb for dating Shir. Wasn't Ava the same age as her or something?

Ava thought they were done, she had almost already turned around and left because this didn't make her annoyance go down. Well, it didn't escalate it either. It was just meh. Any other time Ava would've stuck around to maybe vhat but now she was tired and irritated. And Ava had no idea about feelings or any of that shit, nor was she interested. She had never had a crush of any kind and if she was honest she couldn't care less.

But apparently Maddie still had something to ask her and Ava wanted to groan. The girl had grabbed onto Ava's words about her views on dating. Oh boy, how should she say this nicely? Man, being nice was a pain. Fuck it.
"Well, you know, it's not like it's gonna last. Being a teenager is all about things being temporary, about trying things and letting them go. Okay, saying it's not real was a bit harsh, but it's ultimately a phase, right? Thing that'll pass. And before you give me shit, you asked."
Ava sighed a bit and pulled a scrunchie from her pocket to tie her hair up. There was a one last burn on her neck she needed to get and the hair was on the way.

Madeline looked confused and irritated. "You're the one who said it ain't real in the first place. And you're like, ten years too young to be telling me things like that." Wasn't Ava younger than her, too? And here she was condescending about this. Ugh.

She hadn't even thought about how or whether her relationship with Shir would end. Nor did she want to.

But it was at this point Madeline realized, she was so caught up in her own thing that she didn't entirely notice the burns on Ava's skin. "But, whatever. Forget I even said anything. What happened to you? That looks like it hurts." She rubbed her own neck in the same spot where Ava was burned.

Ava knew when she was pissing someone off and she was obviously doing that to Maddie. Well, at the moment Ava was too tired to care.
"I shouldn't have said anything, my tongue slipped. I shoulda known it'd piss you off. And if I'm 10 years too young to tell you that then aren't you 9 years too early to be doing dating and things like that? Although dating itself as a teen ain't bad, I guess. Good practice and all that."
Ava sighed a bit and spread the burn cream on the last burn on her neck. It stung and Ava almost grimaced.
"Some fucking genius thought that lava dragon wouldn't get burns and started throwing fucking balls of flame at me."
Ava said and growled a bit just from remembering it.

Madeline wished her own illusions could work on her. She tired to mute her own hearing when Ava started going on about how she was "9 years too early..."and it didn't work. She could hear through her own illusions. But ugh, it would have made Madeline feel a lot better if she could just mute life through the dumb parts like this.

At least the conversation moved on from there.

"Well, I hope he got in trouble or something, at least. Jeez. I'm not even allowed to throw fireballs in power classes anymore, and my fireballs can't even injure people."

She hesitated for a moment. She felt like she needed another thing to have needed to talk to Ava about, because this was kinda stupid.

"So, you know how I challenged you to a fight or a sparring match or something?"

The corners of Ava's mouth did twitch upwards slightly when she remembered Titus' fury towards the guy. Oh man, that had been priceless. And kinda frustrating because Ava hadn't been able to direct that same fury towards the guy herself.
"Oh he got in trouble alright. I think Titus would've decked the guy if he hadn't been a student. And who knows, maybe next time I can test some of my new moves on him."
Ava smirked, she was clearly joking. She knew that as a dragon she had the potential to seriously hurt people, so she more often than not held back.

Ava looked at Maddie kinda surprised when she spoke her next words. Ava sighed a bit.
"Yeah, I remember. Something about defending Shir's honour or something. I'm not gonna fight you though. Or what, did you want to seriously challenge me?"
Ava was kinda amused by that thought and there was a small smile on her face. Because even though Maddie's illusions seemed like a tough thing to beat in a normal fight Ava would just need to turn into a dragon and sniff her out, or just turn the ground into lava. Hell, she could sniff her out as a human just as well.
