Hugs aside, the more Will spoke, the more excited Ryuk became. He also liked making people happy? They could make people happy together! A little squeak came from him as he bounced once or twice. "I'm glad! I agree.. people deserve it, and friends are a wonderful thing. Sometimes friends even become family, over time..." A giggle came from him as he offered a half shrug, "We could even try it together, some time. Spreading love, making people feel loved.. I'd like that."

Such excitement was pushed aside as he noted the glowing hands, which he looked at with a sense of curiosity, more than anything. And of course, he also reached to touch them as he offered a curious smile. "You have very pretty markings! If it's okay to ask- what are you?"

William stared at Ryuk in awe. There was no way such a pure person could exist, especially on a place like Earth. He had read up on the many wars that occurred on this planet, and it almost seemed impossible that one could speak with such good intentions. However, there was a boy standing right in front of him and doing just that.

Will felt a strange sense of pride welling up inside him, as if he had watched Ryuk actually grow into the person his was.

When Ryuk spotted the marks on Will's hands, Will knew that he would ask about them. He almost wanted him to. "I'm glad you asked," he said. "I am what you would call a demigod. Simply put, the spawn of two other gods." He explained his background proudly, glad that someone had asked him about it.

"You can touch the marks if you like." He offered both hands to Ryuk.

Ryuk at this moment could tell the other boy was pleased- he just didn't understand what it was. He was happy that William was happy, though, and soon it was Ryuk's turn to look at the other as if he were something amazing, as he listened.

"A demigod? Wow! I've never met a demigod before... you must be super amazing and powerful," He thought to him, before giggling. "It's no wonder your wings were so pretty. I hope those gods are good to you." He then paused, turning a bit sheepish. "I'm.. just a merman. I'm sorry if that's, um, lowly in comparison to you, but.. I still really like you and hope we can be really good friends!"

A squeal, followed by some excited clapping erupted from him as he was granted permission to touch the marks before he began tracing them with his fingers. A delighted smile came to him, as he looked back up at William. "They're beautiful."

William was pleased at Ryuk's amazement. Even though it was easy to impress this boy, it still felt good to do so.

However, as Ryuk admired and complimented the marks on Will's hands, Will eventually registered his previous statement. He ran it through his head a few more times, and the more he thought about what was just said, the more it upset him.

"Hey, don't say that about yourself," he said sternly. "The fact that you're a merman means you can do so many things that I can't." He thought back to what he had read about mermaids and mermen. "Obviously, you can communicate through the mind, which is already something I can't do. You swim fast, and even breath under water. I've even heard that some can control water, and all that's only what I know about mermaids and mermen in general. I can't even stay in water for longer than a few minutes!"

Will's smile returned. "You have your own strengths, and I have some of my own, but in no way does that make me superior, or you lowly. Don't ever think that I feel I'm better than you."

Ryuk, in the midst of tracing William's hands had not expected such a firm expression- it caught him off guard, and immediately got his attention. What was said also threw him off, mainly due to how.. kind it was. He found himself at a loss for words as he stood there, eyes lowering to try and find anything of interest on the sand as he shuffled his feet.

"Sorry... you're right. We all have our weaknesses and strengths. It's a shame you can't be in the water, though.. I'd play a lot of games with you in it." He offered a weak smile as his gaze returned to his newfound friend, shrugging. "I can think like the others, but we should also be able to speak, outright. I cannot. So I am not as strong as the others with that."

He paused, biting his lip thoughtfully before moving closer to the water, making a couple of bubbles come out of it and float around, giggling. "But at the very least, I can do this, and I can make people happy. And that's enough for me." It was partly to show off, but also partly to keep things uplifting. He didn't want to ruin the mood of an otherwise pleasant conversation.

William nodded softly. Although he was glad that Ryuk was trying to abandon that other thought process, he wasn't sure that Ryuk was fully convinced. However, his concern quickly fled when Ryuk giggled again. Will didn't dwell on the fact that he was actually unable to speak instead of choosing not to.

There weren't many people in the world that were content on simply making people happy. It was something that William admired.

Upon seeing Ryuk's power in action, William thought back to the times he had talked about Will's wings. "Um, hey, didn't you say you wanted to see my wings again?" he asked. Without waiting for an answer, he focused all of his energy into his back, and a pressure he didn't even know had been there disappeared. In a matter of seconds, flaming, golden wings began to materialize on his back. They took a few seconds to unfurl into their full wingspan, but when they did, Will made sure to flare them out as much as possible. A few golden feathers drifted to the ground.

Things seemed to shift back to as they had been before quickly- William's wings solidified this fact, as they unfolded and shone in their blazing glory. A gasp came from the merman in turn as he stared in awe, stepping closer. He almost wanted to touch them, but knew better, really. He'd burn. Just how the water was bad for William.

It caused Ryuk to laugh, really, as he shook his head. "They're beautiful- your entire existence is beautiful, actually. The gods that came together to make you knew what they were doing, and I thank them for it. But I find it so.. funny. We agree so much, but we're complete opposites. Water and fire." He didn't make the concern a priority, but certainly hoped it wouldn't cause issues for them later down the line of this friendship.

William listened intently to Ryuk as he admired his wings. However, as the words slowly registered, Will almost couldn't believe what he was hearing. Even though he immediately figured out that Ryuk was the kindest person he had ever met, these words weren't the ones you directed to a random stranger. No, these were on the level of words that a mother cooed while enveloping their newborn baby in a safe embrace. They caused a warmth in his heart that was much different than the one cause by his Sun-fueled soul.

"Wow, Ryuk," he mumbled. "That's... really nice of you. Thank you."

Upon seeing the hesitance of Ryuk to touch his wings, William's heart sunk. He didn't want to be the one to disappoint the boy.

"You know, I learned this neat little trick a while ago." He leaned over and scooped up a bunch of feathers, then ran over to the water. Reluctance briefly washed over him, but he pushed it aside. He then dumped the armful of feathers into the water and quickly brought them back up. Some of the feathers stayed intact for a few seconds, but ultimately fell apart.

"If you dump my feathers in the water for just the right amount of time, they should stay intact," he explained. "They won't be as bright as when they're blazing on my wings, but they're still quite golden. If you grab them by the quills, you shouldn't get burned, but please be careful."

Ryuk giggled, seemingly proud of himself for having pleased William in such a way. It was what he liked to do, after all- and William was an amazing person. If anyone truly deserved it, it was him. He would keep complimenting him, too, just as he did with everyone. If he was allowed to and William stuck around, that was. "Don't thank me for something you deserve."

His attention quickly snapped to the features, though, as William picked them up. He wondered at first if he was going to throw them into the air like confetti- which would be a beautiful display, if he were honest- but instead he was.. getting them wet? But water was bad for William, wasn't it? Why would be put his feathers in a thing that hurts them?

He ran over to him worriedly, clearly concerned for him. This turned into confusion as he noted the feathers.. stayed together. Well, some of them had. He then frowned curiously, before smiling just a little as he pieced things together. He was giving him a way to touch his wings- how sweet.

Touched by this, the merman smiled and gave him one more hug- very careful to avoid the wings- and looked up at him with a warm, welcoming kind of expression. "Thank you. I'll be sure to be careful. Only if you're careful, too... I was worried you were going to dump your wings in the water." A pout came to him, as if he were scolding him as a mother would. "I don't want you hurt just so we can play."

William noted the concern on Ryuk's face and couldn't suppress the grin. "I appreciate the concern, but there's no need to worry," he said. "It only stings a little, and it will start doing actual damage to me after a few minutes."

He shook his body a little bit and more feathers fell from his wings. He repeated the same process as before, and after a few more rounds of shaking his wings and dipping the feathers in the water, he had amassed a considerable amount of cooled down feathers. A pile of them sat at a spot on the sand.

Will admired his handiwork. "Well, it's not really the same as touching my wings, I guess," he stated. "But now you can at least touch the feathers."
