Flying aimlessly

Srydon flew over the mountains, not really paying attention. He was daydreamimg, as he often did, of the day he would be called into battle, like his ancestors before him, and die fighting. He did a small dive, then came level again above the ground, skimming the rocks and low shrubs with his talons. It was a beautiful day, it was a little warm, but the sky was clear blue.
But all Srydon could do was dream about his death in battle, with a small smile on his face.

Elinor's sword clashed against the rocks as she practiced. She knew the Headmistress had said not to go up to the mountains alone because dragons were there.... but really. How many dragons were in the world? One? Two? Three, at most? And what were the odds of all of them being here?

There was nothing to worry about, nothing at all.

But as she looked up, she saw a dragon dive, then become level with the ground. She started shaking in fear... apparently, there were dragons there, and she did have something to worry about.

Elinor hid herself behind a bunch of rocks, poking her head out only so she could see. When she saw it smile, she only became more afraid, and gripped her sword even tighter than she had been doing so a moment before.

This was NOT a good idea...

Srydon continued to fly in broad circles above the mountains. Suddenly he sensed another mind nearby. He reached out and determined it was a human, a girl human, and she was afraid. He went deeper into her mind untill he determined that she could be trusted. He flew over to the place where he sensed her mind and landed. He didn't see her. 'Do not be afraid little one.' He said in a deep, rumbling voice.

Elinor whimpered in fear.

This wasn't a good idea...

Don't trust it...

Stay hidden it will go away...

A million thoughts ran through her head, mostly thoughts of fear. But what other choice did she have other than to show herself? It was probably going to find her anyway...

She stood up slowly, leaving her sword on the ground. She was still shaking, but she couldn't help it.

Elinor tried to speak, but nothing came out. She tried to speak again, yet all that came out was a squeak.

Srydon watched her try to speak. Finally he said, 'You have done nothing to hurt me, so I shall do you nothing to hurt you.' He hoped this would help her calm down.

He smiled. Good, she's starting to calm down.
'Hello Elinor.' He said kindly. 'So what brings to the mountains on this lovely day?'

"Er... well..." Elinor took a quick glance at her sword, then looked back at the dragon. There was no way she could say she was practicing her swordsmanship, no way at all!

"Um... I'm just practicing..." She was able to manage a smile. "Um... since I told you my name, what's yours?"

Srydon smiled kindly at her again. 'My name is Srydon. We don't get many students up here', he said with a sly smile. 'You'd think something here scared them away.'
