Val wasn't usually the early bird of the Watanabe household, but today was a very special day! She had learned when her father's birthday was, and has since etched it into her mind, reminding herself every day not to forget because she had something really special planned. Something she knew her father would love! Over the last few days leading up to this day, she had been buying some ingredients behind her father's back. She didn't like doing it like that, but she didn't want to ruin the surprise either.

Her father usually woke up early, so she had to wake up even earlier, and make the least noise possible. With a perpetual smile on her face, she prepared the meat, the spices, the vegetables and the rest of the ingredients to make the best curry her father ever tasted. Val had always regarded her mother's cooking to be the best. She learned how to cook from her, although Val hadn't yet cooked something as special as her mother's curry for her father before, so she had to make this perfect! Extra perfect even!

As time ticked by, the aroma wafted from the kitchen. She had hoped that it wouldn't wake Tucker up before she was ready, or else everything she was planning would be all for nothing! It would have fallen apart. She kept her ears open, and was extra careful not to make too much noise. Once everything was ready, she put rice on a plate, and put a healthy helping of curry on the side. She took a big whiff of the aroma and was taken back to her home. It smelled just like how her mother cooked it.

Now it was time for tea. She noticed that Tucker preferred tea over coffee, and so she had bought a pack of premium tea. She had tasted a little of it and it was sweet. It was a green tea honey blend with lychee. She liked it, but she wasn't good at telling if this would be something Tucker liked. But as far as Valerie was concerned, the most important part was the curry. It took a few days of convincing herself of that since she was worried that her father would be disappointed with the tea.

Looking at the clock, it was just about time Tucker woke up, so she set everything on the bed tray and carried the food up to Tucker's room. "Dad?" she asked quietly, hoping that he wasn't out of bed yet. She opened the door and saw that he was still asleep. Barely managing to stifle a giggle, she walked to the side of the bed and called out quietly, "Dad? Dad! Dad, wake up,"

Once Tucker had woken up, she said, "Surprise! Happy Birthday, dad!" she greeted him with her cheeriest voice and biggest smile. She set the tray on the bed and clasped her hands behind her back, eagerly waiting for Tucker's reaction.

Tucker would have been lying if he said he didn't know what was going on the past few days but he didn't want to ruin whatever Valerie was planning, whatever it was. She let her concoct her plan; he was subtly curious if Valeria actually thought he wouldn't catch on to anything. Truth be told, he knew she was planing something but he decided if she was going to be secretive, he'll allow her that and decided not to try and investigate himself.

He went on the days just, looking over his shoulder every now and then, though not the same way as he would his erm... 'friends on the other side'. This was his daughter after all; she couldn't be plotting something so dark. And in any case she didn't, he should have known earlier on. Other than his scheming daughter, everything seemed to be in place.

Tucker was awake a little earlier than usual that particular morning; and he already realized there was someone missing on their floor. It didn't take him too long to figure out something was a little more different than her sneaking about compared to the last few days.

When Valerie entered his room, she found him asleep. Or well, she thought he was. With a look of the calendar over his desk, he already knew what she would have been planning so he decided to pretend he didn't wake up earlier than the usual. It took a little of him not to chuckle in his 'sleep' until she walked to his side, a tray in her hands. He could already guess what was in the tray... well, mostly. The aroma was easy to recognize; one all too familiar. This sin't surprise him all that much with all the facts.

He faked being stirred awake, humming curiously, "Val? You're up early," he greeted as he pushed himself to sit up. Her voice was as bright as the morning sun, he couldn't help but laugh.

Tucker turned to the tray, as he guessed it had been curry and she even put the effort of serving tea with it. The aroma was faint, but he could pick the scent of green tea and something sweet. "So this is what my scheming daughter's been up to?" he said, lightheartedness in the tone of his voice as he lightly tapped at her nose while she had this huge smile on her. He was touched, quite honestly, but these were always hard words to say when truly heartfelt.

There was no way of expressing how Val felt with all this. The anxiety when getting everything prepared without him knowing had caused her adrenaline to buzz, and now that she had presented the fruits of her labor, her anxiety moved on over to whether or not she got the taste of home just right.

She wanted Tucker to remember all the fond times he and Valencia had back then. Whether the taste of the food could do that, she didn't know, but she hoped it will. Birthdays were supposed to be happy times, and what would bring more joy than to remember all the good times, right?

The harpy giggled when her father tapped on her nose, being taken off guard. The emotions she had when she first saw Tucker in person came flooding back to her, making her smile even brighter if it were possible. "Sorry I was keeping this a secret from you, but I wanted it to be a surprise!" Even though he sounded like he had suspected something, Val was sure of herself that he didn't exactly know what she had planned, which was a success for her.

Tucker laughed at his daughter's antics. While she was old enough to be an adult, she was certainly childlike in a few aspects that amused him so. A few times he wondered how it would have been like if he got to be there for her younger years but the March incident gave him a little insight to that. He missed a lot, he was sure, regretting having left too soon then, but he justified that he wasn't left with much options. Then again, if he'd known 25 years later he'd be finally found by him of all people, it wouldn't have mattered if he left or not.

"Well, it worked: I'm surprised; even though I knew you were scheming behind my back," he told Valerie, a light chuckle in his tone as he marveled contents the tray. For most of the time, it had been him preparing meals for the both of them, a few times Valerie had pitched in to help in the kitchen when they had the time together. It wouldn't be too far off to say he felt proud of her.

For Valerie, it probably felt like Tucker was dragging on giving a response after he'd taken the first bite; which wasn't far from the truth. Tucker certainly did make her wait, only to tease her just a bit, and a little of actually savoring the flavor. She did well if he could say anything; perhaps a little off from how Valencia had done it, but very close enough for anyone else to not tell the difference. Still, it brought back a few lingering memories when they'd been together all those years ago.

Tucker turned to Valerie after a moment, before his smile broke out into his expression. "You did a great job, sweetheart. Just like how your mom used to make it," he told her, lightly ruffling her hair as he said it.

So he knew that she was planning something, but not what exactly, which was still a triumph in her books. She was proud of what she managed to do, and it very clearly showed in the grin on her face. All that worrying about slipping up and having her plans uncovered, the trouble of making up and practicing excuses in case Tucker found her stash of ingredients, it was all worth it for this day. She may have overthought a few things, but she needed to have a plant still.

As Tucker took the first bite, Valerie was holding her breath. Will he like it? Did she do it right? Did she put too much salt? Was the meat tender enough? She needed to know, and it felt as if the whole scene was going on for much longer that it did.

She could see that Tucker was savoring it, maybe even remembering the first time he tasted her mother's cooking, but it was hard keeping herself from asking him how it was. She wanted to know so badly.

And then the verdict came. It filled her with pride and after having her haired ruffled, she sat on the side of his bed and gave him a big hug, careful not to knock over the food or have her feathers touch it. "You really mean it?!" To say she was happy would be an understatement. Valerie had always aspired to be as good as her mother when it came to cooking, and to hear Tucker say that it was just like how her mom made it, she was ready to burst from her success.

But, once she realized that she had her father's arms pinned to his sides and preventing him from enjoying the meal, she quickly let go, but stayed sitting on the edge of the bed. "Sorry," she chuckled nervously.

It was nice to see her happy, Tucker thought; the way her anxiety seemed to wear off once he'd finally said his piece gave him a sense of joy just by seeing it, like her happiness could just be as infectious. He welcomed the hug, just as proud of her as he could possibly. Part of him felt a sense of loss, thinking of the lost time they had, past birthdays they had to spend apart from each other -- then again, Valerie had her mother then. He on the other hand, had spend the last few years travelling as he always did in a self imposed exile he placed on himself.

Tucker had to keep a tired sigh from leaving him just from the thought, but worried she might take it badly. As the harpy pried herself away, he couldn't help the small chuckle that followed. "Of course I meant it, Val," he told her. "Your mom should be very proud of you."

Taking another bite or two, he turned his attention back to Valerie, nudging the plate to her direction for a moment, "You should eat too; you worked hard I'm sure."

All this happiness was overwhelming her, evident by the tears welling up in her eyes, but she wiped them away with her feathers. The approval of someone she was missing for the great majority of her life was unexpectedly effective on making her so happy just to be with.

Valerie had already been told that her mother was proud of her, or should be proud of her, but for some reason, her long-lost father saying it just felt a hundred times better. That's what almost made her cry right then. It was like a hole in her heart that she didn't even know was there was fixed.

"No, it's okay, dad. I'll just grab some food later downstairs." She smiled brightly. While she would love to share the food, she also didn't want to take away from what she prepared just for him. However, it would be clear that she was having a dilemma just by looking at her. On one hand, she wanted her father to have a full stomach when he finished, but on the other, it would have been such a sweet moment between father and daughter, although she knew that would be a selfish thing to do since she was thinking about herself in that scenario.

Tucker looked at his daughter for a moment. He had a sharp eye and while he could say her bright smile could convince anyone, he would have said otherwise. Well, he did think that Valerie didn't really make it hard for people to read what's on her mind. She'd always been a little too expressive to be remotely neutral.

The mage decided to keep his chuckles to himself, setting down the spoon on the plate for a moment, looking at Valerie with inquisitive eyes. And yet there was a slight mischief hidden under his expression, a rare sight for most people since he chooses to be more covert with his thoughts. "You're sure? You're not just gonna watch your dad eat, are you?"

Seeing the spoon being set down and seeing something in her dad's eyes, she took it as an invitation to join him. "Well, if you insist," she'd say before taking a spoonful and feeding herself. It was a relief on her stomach. She was definitely hungry, but that one spoonful should keep her stomach from groaning out.

She chuckled as she reached to get another spoonful, but instead she turned the spoon to her dad once she got a good amount. "Now open wide for the choo-choo train," she said playfully. If she could smile even wider than she had already been, she would have already done that.

It was a corny line, especially when a child said it to a parent, and she was truly blushing from embarrassment for even saying that, but she didn't care that much.

A quiet chuckle escaped the mage as he watched his daugther take a bite out of the meal. He felt a bit nostalgic; in the past few years he'd elected to be alone and focus on his original goals alone. He didn't let himself be distracted by anything, but once in a while, he did miss the company. Once in a while, he did miss living with a friend or a family.

Tucker laughed as his daughter turned her second spoonful towards him, raising a hand slightly in protest. "Really, now, Val? Really?" he spoke. While he'd said it rather sternly, there was a hint of laughter in his voice, as if he was trying to keep himself breaking down into chuckles. He looked at his daughter with a raised brow, almost as if he was waiting for either of them to break from the set-up. "Your father might be old but I'm still too eternally young and fit for you to be spoon feeding yet."
