'Left... And then here... Right? Is it right? Or is it... Well, it can't really be anything but right, but then... Does it say one or two corners?', she muttered, as she tried to decipher the hand drawn map somebody at the Administration Office gave her. 'Honestly, can this be more illegible!', she yells under her breath, raising her head towards the sky and rolling her eyes, before focusing on the lines once more. Getting to the book store should not be this hard!

She turned another corner, then another, barely watching where she was going as the squinted at the damn lines. Somewhere in the back of her mind she noticed that the noises around her were getting louder, and louder, people yelling, dogs barking, and something else making some strange strange noises. Was that a cow? Why was she hearing a cow of all things?! Wait, was that a sign for the River Street?!

Without really noticing, as she went further and further into the marketplace, Maria slowly raised her Field of Silence around her in order to concentrate better on her map, quieting everybody in the three meter radius around her.

As it had been for the past week; the fall weather sent a chill through
the streets as well as a light wind rustling through the treetops. However,
today, Brendon could spy the darker gray clouds beginning to form and
he could almost smell the condensation within the air gathering. His
mother had told him earlier this morning that it would rain within a few
hours from now, and Brendon could now see the evidence of that statement.

The sixteen year old boy often enjoyed the rain, and under most
circumstances didn’t mind being out within it. However, when it
came to the chilly temperatures of autumn and the icy rains of
the season, he preferred to remain dry.

As he and his mother walked through the streets of the city, through
the crowded marketplace, and near a certain bookstore… poor Brendon
could feel himself tensing and growing a little pink-cheeked. He
was quickly making a face, although trying his hardest to fight it
down, a-and glaring at the old looking store. His amber gaze flickered
from one glass window to another… and he could feel his heart beat
picking up.

Bad news…! He shouted within his mind, and he could envision the
blond haired, green eyed, man standing within. He wondered if he was at
the back of the store, standing behind his register. O-Or maybe he was
at one of the windows—Brendon quickly craned his neck, his eyes widening,
as he fought to stare at the windows while his mother continued forward.

N-No, he… he’s a bad man, He warned himself and jerked his gaze
away and forward once more. Bad, bad news! Don’t think about him…!

'Well, this can't be right.', she proclaimed, frowning at the map. If looks could kill, the poor paper would have turned to ash by now. 'Gh, damn, who the hall drew this?! Do they even know the city?! Or basics of drawing for starters!', she mussed under her breath, turning the map around to see if it made any sense that way. It didn't. 'Oh, I give up.', she sighed.

All of this happened while her field was still up, which meant that only she could hear herself, all the others silenced, unable to hear, or speak. She didn't seem to notice though, focused on looking for something that at least resembled the bookstore, all the people around her slowly falling into panic. They knew, of course, what kind of island they lived on, some of them being specially gifted themselves, but the silence prevented them from making business and it wasn't going away.

Scratching her head, Maria turned, sighing, as he decided to go back to campus and ask somebody there to draw her a better map. Doing that, she, of course, had to bump into someone. 'Oh, I'm so sorry...', she said, raising her head. The boy was quite colorful. How did she not notice him before?

“Brendon,” His mother voiced her stern disapproval the moment she
realized what he was doing. And, upon realizing how blatantly
obvious he had been making his actions, Brendon instantly blushed
with shame as well as embarrassment. Quickly, he turned his
attention first to his mother and then ahead of him… his cheeks
rosy as he tried to keep everything he was feeling inside of him.

“Yes, mother,” He returned softly. “I’m sorry, m………”

The sixteen year old blinked as, suddenly, a void of silence seemed
to hit him. He instantly became confused, his eyes widening and his
hands rising to his ears. A deep feeling of fear struck him hard as
his first initial belief was that his hearing had somehow stopped
working.

“………,” He tried to speak to his mother, his hand reaching up to
desperately cling to her robes. But, as he stared up into her gaze…
he could instantly see the shock and recognition within her eyes as
well. What, exactly, that shock and recognition was for… h-he wasn’t
sure. Or, perhaps, it was his naivety that prevented him from putting
the answer together.

His mother’s grip around him tightened and began to pull him roughly
forward—in an attempt, unknown to Brendon, to pull him out of the path
of another. However, as he stumbled and panicked over his sudden loss
of hearing all sound, he was abruptly bumped into.

“Oh, I’m so sorry…”

Sound exploded within his head again. It all rushed back to him, and
Brendon cried out… his heart beating wildly as he pressed against his
ears… terrified of losing his hearing again. His mother was instantly
wrapping her arms from behind him and pulling him backward, into her
embrace. She was pulling his hands down from his ears, giving him a
reassuring squeeze.

Her face was slightly strained and stiff as she stared down at the blond
teenage girl.

“That’s all right, miss,” She told her, her features softening a fraction
as she offered a smile.

Maria was shocked for a moment, first by the force of impact, then by the boy's cry, only to be started down by the women in the end. Although she did give her a smile in the end.

'Uh, yeah, I...', she was still a bit confused. Then, she looked around, taking in the lingering panic and the quite curses that people were saying, suddenly realising that she had done it again. Her face instantly lit up like a fire in a cold winter night.

'Oh, for the love of all I thought I learned to control it.', she said quietly under her breath, looking at the boy. No wonder he was so surprised, she knew very well how being in her Field of Silence affected those who encountered it for the first time, several of her friends describing it as very unpleasant and threatening to do some equally unpleasant things if she did it ever again. She usually just scoffed, telling them that she will stop using it once they stopped being so loud, but this was different. These people were complete strangers, not her friends! Plus, she had silenced the half of the market place!

'I really, really, really am sorry.', she said again, looking at the boy. 'So sorry.', she was still blushing like a tomato.

The shocked and panicked sixteen year old was far too distracted
and distraught to taken in anything the girl before him was
mumbling under her breath. His heart was still beating frantically
within his chest, his face drained of all color. The sudden force
of sound once more was causing a headache to pound within his mind…
a-and he didn’t know how to take everything.

“I really, really, really am sorry,” The girl said to him, her green
eyes focused on him. “So sorry.”

Brendon took in another raspy breath of air, feeling as though he
hadn’t been breathing enough. But, after he swallowed a couple of
times… he managed to bob his head in response to her. S-She was
apologizing b-but he had momentarily forgot that she had even bumped
into him and so, currently, he had no idea why she was apologizing.

“It’s quite all right,” His mother spoke up again and this time leaned
down to glance at him and pat him atop his head. “You’re fine, right
honey?”

Brendon’s amber gaze flickered between his mother and the girl briefly,
but he quickly began to nod his head in agreement to his mother’s
statement. I-It had only been a small bump—that is, that hadn’t been
a problem at all. He was more flabbergasted and upset by his temporary
hearing loss.

He would have to talk to his mother and tell her what had happened… Was
that normal? Or did that mean that something was wrong? Was he losing
his hearing?

'I, uh, wasn't apologizing about that.', she said, lowering her head, her blush getting worse and worse. 'Um, apparently, it helps if you close your eyes for the moment and count to ten, taking the deep breaths.', she said to the boy again, even though until now it was the woman who had been answering to all of her apologizes. 'At least that's what my friends said, and they got caught up in it one time too many. Their words, not mine.', she was still fidgeting under the woman's watchful gaze.

'So, uhm, sorry, again? About the Field, I mean, I really didn't notice what I was doing, and, uh... Should I apologize to all these people as well?', she said turning around, immediately looking for some kind of platform she could say her apologizes from.

“I, uh, wasn’t apologizing about that.” The short haired blond returned
and as Brendon glanced back toward her, still distraught and caught up
in his own worries, he belatedly realized how much she was blushing. It
reminded him of himself and, more particularly, the way he had been acting
yesterday at the bookstore.

At the abrupt and unexpected thought, Brendon couldn’t help the somewhat
sour expression that fleeted across his features for a single moment. The
girl… Brendon blinked, unconsciously not quite listening to what she was
saying when he realized that this girl had blond hair and green
eyes.

Brendon’s gaze widened and his heart skipped a beat—d-did everyone here have
that combination of hair and eye color…! T-That stupid, old, stinky man…!

“So, uhm, sorry, again? About the Field, I mean—”

“It’s quite all right, young miss, I can assure you,” His mother
actually spoke up and right over the teenager, cutting off her words all
together. The abruptness and, a-and not to mention rudeness
instantaneously jarred Brendon from his thoughts.

“M-Mother…!” He gasped, shocked at her actions, but she was quickly hushing
him and taking his hand.

“You be careful and more mindful of where you are and where you are going,
young miss,” His mother told the teenager with a subtle nod her head. “Come
along, Brendon.”

'I am careful of where I am and where I'm going!', she bursted out unexpectedly. She might have been timid and prone to blushing when she was at fault, but she was not a pushover, not even when the one criticising her was an older woman, no, scratch that, it was because it was and old...er woman. She didn't even know her! Though, she was right, this time.

'Usually!', she added, still half annoyed. 'It's just that this stupid map got me all focused, and whenever I'm focused, my Field of Silence goes up!', she fussed, tapping her foot on the ground. 'And it only got me walking in circles in the end! I could've done that myself, thank you very much.', she complained under her breath some more, before rising her head.

'Ah, you wouldn't happen to know where is the bookstore, would you?', she asked timidly once more. She really needed those books.

Brendon was shocked and confused, his amber gaze looking back toward the teenager as she continued to talk to them. His mother—to his complete shock and bafflement—did not stop to listen and continued to pull him away. The girl continued to go on and seemed to be quite adamant.

But, likewise, so was his mother…

She was speaking to him, speaking over the girl, and telling him to not listen.

“We’re going home now,” She stated firmly, looking to be quite upset and stressed. The worry he saw within his mother made the sixteen year old frown. He could not help but wonder why his mother was acting such a way… why she seemed to be so upset by that girl.

Not only that, but what had happened to him? Why had he suddenly lost all of his hearing? It scared him… The thought scared him… What if there was something wrong with him? What other explanation could there be?
