Feeling foolish

Robin was running through the empty halls, her mind going a million miles a second. She felt like crap - she'd just thrown up, she was still getting headaches from the Lithium they'd given her, and she was afraid the teacher would send someone up to find her and bring her back. She'd practically ran out in the middle of Math class, after all. It was her first day, and she didn't have to go, but she wanted to make a good impression, wanted to show them she wasn't what they thought she was.

But of course that didn't work.

The teacher had to make a fool out of her, introducing her and practically screaming to the class all the stuff she didn't want anyone to know - she was a foster child, a pity case, flippin' bipolar (didn't people have tact anymore?) -; then they'd all stared at her, and she'd made an excuse and practically ran out of the classroom to a bathroom. And then she'd gotten sick, and wasn't that just perfect, just the sort of thing that Robin Alders was likely to do on a first day?

Robin slowed down, glancing over her shoulder and ducking into an empty classroom. She had no idea where she was, but it looked abandon and quiet and that's just what she needed right now. She turned to one of the windows, rubbing it with a dark red sleeve even though she'd knew it'd get dirty and she needed to keep it clean because she still didn't know where the laundromat was, and...

She sighed, dropping down on the floor and hugging her knees to her chest. Someone was coming after her, she just knew it. It'd probably be one of the nice ones, the ones who'd smiled at her and sort of glared at the teacher for saying that. Or maybe she was just misjudging her worth, and maybe no one would care. She was just one person, after all, and there were so many people here.
"What should I do?" She asked the room, poking her tongue at her teeth like she always did when she couldn't figure something out. This was... This was just perfect.

Her head hurt.

Dani grabbed her backpack and stormed out of her class without a sound. She jammed her iPod headphones into her ears, trying to listen to the apparently soothing new age music her sister had sent her.

After a few seconds, she rolled her eyes and yanked out the headphones. She rolled up the cord and put it in her backpack.

Stupid school.

She'd just failed about two tests, gotten a C on another, and barely scraped by with an A- on another. She had a TON of homework, and was still barely awake from that morning.

Danica had taken a look in her dorm, seen her roommate looking like she wanted to have fun, and tiptoed away before Kayla saw her. She was nice, but Danica was NOT in the mood. She peeked into the lounge, saw a million kids giggling, and knew she'd never get anything done. Outside it was too cold and too pretty for her today, so she finally settled on the empty rooms.

She stomped inside, dropped her backpack and sat on the floor, glared at the floor for awhile, then finally looked up to see what else was in this stupid room. And there was someone staring back at her.

Crap.

"Um... hi."

It had been about seven or eight minutes since she'd sat down, and no one seemed looking for her. Robin relaxed, stretching out her legs on the dusty floor and yawning leisurely. She'd just spend the rest of the day wandering around, she supposed, like one was supposed to on a first day...

Footsteps. She jerked her head up, thinking about trying to slip away but changing her mind. They'd definitely see her, and then it'd be even more embarrassing... She sighed, rolling her eyes and waiting for whoever it was to find her.

A girl slumped in, and Robin could tell at a glance that she wasn't anyone from her class. A silent grin split her face, dropping just as quickly - the girl didn't seem to notice her. Ah, it was just as well. She wasn't entirely sure if she was up to another embarrassment today... But she still couldn't seem to tear her eyes away from the blond girl, wondering when - if ever - she would notice her.

Just when she was losing interest, the girl glanced up at her, a look of surprise and annoyance crossing her face that Robin didn't blame her for.

"Um... hi."

She spread her fingers in something weakly resembling a wave, a half smirk on her face. "Hi." Opal eyes swept the room, and when she trained them back on the girl they were slightly quizzical. "This is a dusty and seemingly forgotten room; please, please don't tell me it's a popular hangout or something, because I really don't want to get up."

Danica and the girl stared at each other for awhile; it seemed as if they were both trying to figure each other out.

The girl looked sort of... depressed? Mad? Upset, somehow.

Finally, the girl waved back at Danica, saying hello as well.

Please don't tell me it's a popular hangout or something, because I really don't want to get up.

The side of Dani's mouth curled up, almost managing a small smile. It was exactly how she felt.

Danica shook her head. "Uh-uh. I just came in here to do homework, away from everyone else."

She brushed a few strands of hair behind her ears, trying to look less unfriendly then she was certain she did now. "I'm Danica," she said, sighing.

Uh-uh. I just came in here to do homework, away from everyone else.

Robin nodded, breaking her gaze with the girl in favor of her own slender fingers. "Same here. Except - no homework." She smiled humorlessly, one hand going up to rub at an aching temple. "Just trying to hide, I guess."

The girl - Danica - sighed, Robin guessed in reluctant acceptance of her presence. She felt a bit bad for her, although she wasn't entirely sure why. "Danica?" She repeated, because she wasn't feeling well and she didn't want to forget it. "I'm Robin."

She looked up at her again, lips jerking up in a quick smile at the look on her face; it was basically the same one on hers. "What's your reason for hating the world right now?" She doubted she'd even answer her; it was just barely a question.

"Eh..." Danica said, watching Robin. She guessed Robin had a headache- she kept rubbing her head.

"Stupid stuff. I'm failing half of my classes and I'm super tired. Not really the end of the world." Now that she said it out loud, she realized how pathetic she sounded.

Gahhhh, I'm turning into an overreacting freak! she said to herself and winced. She took a few deep breaths.

"What about you?"

"Well, that sucks." She muttered, fixing her stare on the girl once more. "Most of the time, you're either tired or failing classes, not both."

"What about me?" She laughed quietly, privately, wondering what to say. "Well... I'm trying to get back into the habit of eating and sleeping, I just discovered I have a super power - and it's stupid, at that - and I'll probably fail my classes too, unless I can work up the nerve to actually... Oh, I don't know, go to one?" She rolled her eyes at herself, knowing it was too late to go back now. "So what are you failing?"

Danica smirked. "Oh, for me it's always both."

She raised her eyebrows at Robin's response. "How'd you get out of the habit?" she wondered. "And yeah, super powers, pretty crazy. At least it's not like you're the only one in the world. And why don't you want to go to classes? Everyone just blows them off, anyway. It's better to be there and bored than outside of one and bored. Then the teachers can't get as mad at you."

She shrugged. "Eh, math mostly. Stupid. Like, when is math going to help me when, hello, I've got a calculator?"

Robin shrugged, not really knowing what to say. "I don't know. There's no reason... No one and one make two. I just... Stopped. I forgot. I was sleepy, but I didn't think 'hey, I should go to bed!'... My reasoning skills weren't the best." Her tongue poked at her teeth absent-mindedly, eyes glazing over for a few seconds before she returned to the present.

She nodded, reluctantly accepting the girl's logic. "I suppose. But, you... You've probably had your powers since you were tiny, yeah? And when you discovered them, someone made sure you knew it was alright, told you weren't schizoaffective; because it is so, so very scary to think that you're getting..." She frowned, stopping herself with a half-smile. "I'm just angsting... Sorry. Do you have a power?"

"I'm being paranoid... I think that everyone is watching me." She grinned, holding her slender hands to her head. "I'll go, as soon as I can make myself a tinfoil hat to keep out the mind readers." She scratched her ear, realized that in a place like SA, there might actually be mind readers lurking the hallways, and felt even more uncomfortable then ever.

The corners of her lips twitched into a smile, and she nodded. "We are truly living in the world of tommorrow - don't even have to learn anything anymore!" A pause, and "I thought they allowed calculators in math, anyway... Don't they?"

Danica nodded as if she understood what Robin was talking about, even though she had no idea. How could you forget to go to sleep?

"You've probably had your powers since you were tiny, yeah? And when you discovered them, someone made sure you knew it was alright, told you weren't schizoaffective..."

"Ohmigod that happened to you??" Danica asked, eyes wide. "That really sucks! Oh, wow."

"I'll go, as soon as I can make myself a tinfoil hat to keep out the mind readers."

She laughed. "I doubt tinfoil will keep out the mind readers here."

"Maybe calculators are allowed... I really don't know. Never asked."

Um... what else could Danica say?

"What are your powers, anyway?"
