Feeling foolish

She shrugged one shoulder, doing a good job of seeming uncaring. "Not their fault, I guess. If I saw some girl who'd stopped eating, sleeping and who'd already been going on about she could jump off buildings and be alright, I'd call bull if she'd said she had powers too." She could most definitely understand why they hadn't believed her, but that didn't make her less mad at them...

"I duplicate myself. They drugged me, and apparently I started doing this." She held up her hands, splitting them into twos and threes; her head was doing the same, each copy grinning at the hazy memory of the nurse's scream. "Then they believed me. What are your powers?"

"Hello," Danica said, surprised. She watched Robin's arms split into two, then snap back together. "That's sweet!"

She concentrated and closed her eyes, imagining the whole world dark. She opened her eyes for a moment, confirming that she couldn't see anything, then concentrated on light again. She opened her eyes. "I can control light and darkness."

Umm... what now? "Are you new here? Or have you been here for awhile?"

"No, that's sweet." She grinned, glancing out the grimy window to see if it had effected anyone else. "Can you concentrate it? How far can it reach?" This girl's power, while still odd, was less so then any of the other one's she'd seen - and more awesome, for that matter.

"About two hours. See this backpack?" She held the ragged purple and silver thing up, having to use both arms; she wasn't exactly built at the moment. "It contains all my worldly posessions. It is very heavy and I wish I didn't have to carry it everywhere." She frowned, heaving it back onto the floor with a thump. "How long have you been here?"

"I have a question." She announced out of nowhere, standing up and walking to the blackboard. "Do lots of people with powers have, like, all dead families?" She realized with a twinge of remorse that Danica might have dead relatives, but it was too late to take it back now, so she went on. "I mean, there's a whole lot of people - you ask 'em about their families, and they get all sad and quiet and 'oh they're all dead'. Are powers more likely to develop in a stressful environment or something?" A pause, and she laughed bitterly. "If this is like, powers 101 stuff, sorry. I'm kinda lost here."

Danica grinned. "Thank you," she said, giving a little mock bow. "I think I can reach out a couple miles if I really concentrate, but I just did this room a second ago." She sighed. "My grandma can do, like, entire cities. She's amazing."

She looked at Robin's backpack. "You should find a dorm!" She paused. "Well, if you've only been here a few hours, guess you didn't have time. Find one soon." She pulled her sleeves down over her hands to try to warm them up. It was kind of cold in here. "I've been here since term started. It's pretty fun here, you'll like it."

Do lots of people with powers have, like, all dead families?

Danica laughed out loud. "Ohmigod, I know! Either they were abandoned at birth and had abusive adoptive/foster parents or their parents just died somehow. She sighed. "I mean, I guess it's sad, but it seems like some of them have to be making it up! I don't think you need to have dead parents to have powers. Because, hello, I've got a ton of family and my powers work pretty well."

She nodded, glancing over at her backpack. She didn't actually know where the dorms were; that would be fun. "I'll do it as soon as I'm done in the hospital wing." She was talking in a conversational tone, but she was almost speaking to herself, telling herself so she wouldn't forget.

She let out a sigh of relief at the girl's validation of her suspicions, grinning slightly. "Maybe they're just trying to fit in. I mean, I was trying to get directions from a girl on the lawn, and she was practically falling over herself trying to find a way to talk about her dead sister and her abusive dad and car crashes and on and on and on. Which'd be sad - if it sounded even slightly true. I'm surprised she didn't throw in an evil stepmother to boot."

A pause, and then, to be honest - "my parents were apparently abusive, but it's not like I go into tears everytime I think about it. I was in the system for six years and only one caregiver was actually mean to me, out of about fourteen different families. A few of them used to send me letters now and then..." She grinned, picking up a dusty peice of chalk and swiping it against the blackboard curiously before setting it back down again. "So you got your power from your Grandma, huh? Do your parents have any, or can it skip generations?"

Danica nodded along, wondering why Robin was going to the hospital wing. But Danica had asked enough questions, and she figured Robin would maybe tell her eventually.

She nodded again. "You're right. It does make you more interesting, doesn't it? If it wasn't for my dynamic personality," she said jokingly, "I'd probably be pretty boring."

Then she stopped smiling. Oh, God, Robin had abusive parents. Danica prayed she hadn't offended her or anything. She didn't appear to be annoyed, though, which was a good sign.

Anyway, Robin had moved on to something else.

Dani shrugged. "I really don't know. I guess it can skip a lot, because my dad- she's my dad's mom- or my sister or my brother have powers. It skipped almost five generations before it got to my grandma."

Danica played with a piece of her hair, twisting it into a knot and tugging it out. "Do you have any idea where you got your powers? Or was it like a Spider-Man thing?"
