If they had anything like the Food Festival back in Halcyon, Jude hadn't known about it. That hadn't been his thing back then. He'd mostly kept to himself. He'd done his homework, and he'd stayed in, and he hadn't just... gone walking. Hadn't just walked through the city looking at things and experiencing the local culture.

He was trying to change.

And he was making that change with his father.

His relationship with Basilio had changed significantly since their arrival on Manta Carlos. In a lot of ways, the edges had softened, the danger past. Adraxis was still there, but there was no longer the risk of him finding out about Giltenn, and while Jude knew his father had some very strong opinions on Giltenn, they were things that existed in the past, not the present.

Not like the restaurant. That was the future Jude was dwelling on as they wound through the stalls at the Food Festival, eyeing all the options. There were the human cultures--Indian food, Russian food, and what have you--but also entirely alien cultures and things that had no equivalent anywhere on earth but on Manta Carlos.

In theory, Jude was there to sample them, but that didn't stop him from asking the question that was really on his mind.

"So, how's school going?" It felt funny to ask that, considering his dad was, you know, his dad. But school was school.

Lately Basilio had been smiling a lot more. And these were genuine, kindly smiles rather than the menacing sneers one would expect from him given his stature and scarred appearance. He had realized almost immediately that putting on a front of terror was not conducive to what he needed or wanted to do here in this world that was now his and his son's home.

No more galas and benefit dinners, at least for a while. Now he was going to truly public events, open to everyone and filled with the lowest common denominator. He was one of them too now, he supposed. This food festival was an opportunity however. He had spoke with Officer Genovese (he refused to call him by his first name) and brought a dish himself. Something traditional Northern Italian. He wanted to see what the general climate was like and how others would receive his family's cuisine.

Meanwhile Angelo and he walked around the festival, sampling the varied foods and mingling. It was nice. Good father and son bonding time. He paused at Angelo's question and gave a small shrug after a moment of contemplation. "My classes are just about through with, I believe. I have more history to catch up on, but it isn't necessary that I know all the details of the last dozen wars this world suffered through. How about you? How is school? How are your friends? Your girlfriend?"

That was the stereotype, was it? The son getting home from school and being asked by their parents how was class? Only Basilio was, in theory, in class as well.

"The only one anyone ever mentions is the second one," Jude said, "and it seems to come up a lot, but only in broad strokes. As long as you have a general, one paragraph overview of what happened, you'll be just fine."

Mostly nazis. People liked to reference them a lot, which seemed unusual.

It was fun to catch up. Relaxing. Normal.

"School's fine. Home Ec has to make accommodations for my arm, which is a bit of a pain." He was desperately hoping to have a new arm by the end of the month, but it was hard to tell if it was going to work out, even with Armourer around. "People are fine. The stuff with Xavier that's going on is a bit of a... a mood killer, but it's something we'll get through just the same. Alma's pretty upset by it. It didn't hurt Chloe at all, but if it was done to Alma, she'd probably still be in the hospital."

"Christ, I can't even imag- well no that isn't true. I've heard some describe holy water like acid." And Basilio could pretty easily imagine the effects of a literal bucket of acid being dumped on a person. He grimaced slightly. "That boy is not welcome in our restaurant, when things get up and running. I am not going to risk losing an entire customer base because of one patron. Maybe if he shows any real attempt to make restitution, but..."

Basilio picked at some food and nodded. It was good for sure. He just hoped that his own food met with decent feedback. "The restaurant is coming along at least. And I think I found an apartment for us, but i'm still waiting on approval for the loan to get the first few months' rent settled."

"He hasn't," Jude said with a wave of his hands, "and he won't. Even now I don't think he could explain why I cut him off, and that's with me having told him why i cut him off. I don't think he gets it, and I don't think he ever will."

Jude wasn't exactly known for his faith in others.

He retrieved a samosa and popped it into his mouth, working his way through it as his father explained what he'd been up to.

"Did you find an angel investor?" Jude asked between bites. "Or are you taking over an existing one?"

"I wouldn't call her an angel for certain," Basilio said, tabling the discussion of the crimes of Xavier Joiner indefinitely. "But she has certainly been helpful so far. Dr. Asteria Vrall. I believe you know her?"

Asteria? Asteria. A part of Jude's brain went is this a coincidence for about thirty seconds before the other half of his brain strangled the first half, because no. Of course not.

"Yes," he confirmed. "I do. I know her... uh, ward? Son? Ezra. He's really nice, although he's a bit, uh, weird. Good weird though. Friendly. I met her a few times in the center, and visited her once at her home. She wanted to check on how Ezra was doing. Dotes on him a bit."

"Oh good, that makes all this easier then," Basilio said, sampling more of the food. This was good, at least. She had mentioned Angelo being friends with her child. They had even swapped empty threats at each other about their respective children.

"You'll have to tell me what you know later. Would have been nice to know ahead of time, I suppose. But no matter. We have formal legal documents so there's no messy gentlemen's agreement to deal with. I have a location. Former restaurant that went out of business, so there's at least less construction and installation to have to do."

And that was good because he needed to use some of the money to put the down payment on their apartment and get himself some other clothes that had his shoes' enchantments on them.

"Nothing bad," Jude said. "Asteria's kind of odd, but otherwise an upstanding citizen. I can tell you more later."

He didn't really have bad things to say. There was no reason for it. Even knowing what he did about Ezra... well, that didn't significantly change things, did it? Asteria was still fundamentally the same person. If anything, the story would probably just endear her to his father that much more.

"Went out of business due to mismanagement, I guess?" The location likely wasn't bad. That was the trick of moving into old restaurants. You had to figure out why they went out of business, and that it wasn't because there was no traffic nearby.

Jude picked out a small... something. It was lime green and looked absolutely bizarre, but it tasted sweet and unlike any sort of savory Earth food he could think of.

"Mismanagement, yes. The old owners were-" how to say it? Basilio's lips drew into a thin, unamused line as he turned from his food to look Angelo in the eye.

"Well, they were a Family. But they apparently never got the memo about discretion. So as far as I can tell, they got broken up and no one really took the restaurant over."

No real loss in his mind. Basilio couldn't stand people who didn't know how to keep private matters private. And from what he had heard the food hadn't even been that authentic. Oh well, no reason to worry about it now. There were other reasons he liked the place, but those weren't really good to discuss at an event like this one.

"Yes, we'll have to talk about her in depth sometime. Other than that, hopefully the paperwork for the apartment should be done soon and we can move by month's end. Like am early Christmas present: us having a place of our own."
