Matilda was reminded of several other famous works of literature involving a kid going to a magical school. This particular school felt more Westbridge than Hogwarts. Just walking to her dorm room, she’d passed nervously by several demons, accidentally walked through a ghost, and caught an uncomfortable glimpse of some kind of elf and an honest-to-goodness alien making out in an empty corridor. She’d tried her best not to gawk, but Tilly had never seen magic practiced out in the open, much less been confronted with the existence of extraterrestrial beings and several pieces of conflicting evidence towards various religions on her way to use the bathroom.

She looked positively giddy, and the other students were taking notice. She definitely wasn’t the first fish out of water to come through the gates, and she wouldn’t be the last. A few students sniggered and whispered about her, but most smiled sympathetically. They’d all been that kid before. A boy with horns held the door open for her as she left the dorms. A cyborg eyed her aura warning bracelet uncomfortably as she passed him by.

She was half skipping, half walking down the steps, towards the seating near the statue in front of the high school. She had just dropped her luggage in her room. She’d kept her staff, which attracted less odd looks than you might have expected, as did the wide-brimmed wizard’s hat she sported. She hadn’t yet had time to change into her uniform, so she still had on the clothes she’d been wearing when she left Michigan an eternity ago: A black leather jacket over deep V-neck jersey t-shirt, a red and black plaid-lined pencil skirt, a pair of plain black leggings, and some comfortable boots. Most of it was stuff she’d picked up thrift shopping, save for the hat, and looked worn but comfortable. One man’s trash, after all…

She plopped down on one of the stone benches, laying her staff across her lap neatly, and pulling a pocket watch from her jacket. It was old, the kind you had to wind up every morning, but it rarely gave out under duress from her magic, so it was worth the inconvenience. She was… Several minutes late. And these were several minutes for late Tilly, who tended to show up ten or twenty minutes after the specified time on principle.
”Oops.” She mumbled, glancing nervously around for the guide she was supposed to be meeting here.

Why had they picked Diego of all people to do this pain in the ass guide thing? Surely there were many more, lot nicer troublemakers to show the newbie around. But nooooo, just had to dump it on him. Who even cared if Diego skipped all of his art classes? It didn't hurt anyone but him. And even though he skipped all the art classes Diego still did art. A lot of it. Secretly, but still.
Well, not that Diego could just avoid it, the teachers had threatened that if he skipped this it would affect his other grades as well. Diego was proud of his other grades, he wasn't stupid after all, so he didn't want anything to happen to those.

But Diego did make a statement by arriving 10 minutes late. He didn't want to do this, and that would be seen through Diego's silent rebellion. The teachers had also told him to be nice to the newbie, and Diego would be as nice as he could. Which would depend on exactly what kind of person this kid was going to be.
Diego, always staying airborne, floated on towards the fountain, his hands stuffed in his hoodie pockets. Diego rarely bothered wearing the blazer part of his uniform, he just wore a hoodie over the shirt, and his uniform pants were rolled up to his knees. Overall casual look, that spoke volumes of Diego's personality. And his feather tipped moss green hair was on a manbun today, few strands escaping to frame his face.

Diego arrived on the fountain, and he looked around while floating 4 or so feet in the air. And it was pretty easy to spot the newbie, guess it was the air about her. Diego was also relatively new, had barely been around for 6 months, but he had lived in a dimension filled with superpowers and weirdness prior to the academy, so the jump hadn't been that big. But this chick looked at everything like it was oh, so wonderous. If she was going to go ahead and express all that excitement outright Diego was going to be exhausted quickly.
"You Matilda?"
Diego asked as he floated over to her, staying ever so slightly above her height, like he always did. Just bit above the tallest person in the room.

To her surprise, it looked like her guide only just got here. Well, that was a relief. Maybe lateness was the key identifying factor in the supernatural community. That would certainly make her class schedule a whole lot less stressful. The boy who called her name had hair the color of evergreen needles, and was currently making a mockery of his school uniform, as far as she could tell. Was the dress code here not too strict, or did he not care?

His choice of greeting inclined Matilda to the latter, though she kept her mind open. He floated over to her, looking like he couldn't care less, and cared a lot about letting everyone know that. Sure, she knew this was still a high school, but she expected someone to be a bit more… Energetic? This was a school for freakin’ wizards, aliens, and vampires, for crying out loud! Was this just normal to them?

She stopped herself, realizing that she’d been sitting there looking stupid for just a moment too long while she’d been pondering that. She blinked quickly, recovering with serene grace.
”Me Matilda. You Tarzan?” She grunted. She’d pause for a beat, then, realizing she was probably making an ass of herself, quickly added: ”Uh, yeah, I’m Tilly. Pleased to meet you!.”

She thrust out her hand to shake, only she was sitting and he was floating, so she ended up dropping her staff in the process, emitting a blast of sparks in the process. She doubled over, scooping the stick up clumsily, crossing her arms over her chest to hold it steady and standing up, clumsily offering one of her hands in an awkwardly offered handshake. ”Oops! My bad!”

For some reason this girl seemed dumbfounded for few moments, what was up with her? Was seeing someone fly so unusual? She looked like she fit in to SA just great with her staff and getup. Or maybe she had just dressed up thinking she'd fit in like that better. Diego knew a thing or two about keeping up appearances.
Or maybe Diego was exactly her type and she was mesmerized. Though Diego seriously doubted that.

Anyway, Matilda snapped out of it, and her answer made Diego blink and snort. Okay, yeah, he couldn't blame the girl for calling him out on that. And in a pretty funny way too.
"Me Diego, actually. But Tarzan in my middle name so good guess."
Diego answered with an amused smirk.

Diego was about to say he didn't really do the handshake thing, when Matilda(or Tilly like she had said it) dropped her wand. Diego momentarily swooped higher when sparks flied, and he blinked at that fire hazard of a magic staff.
"Yeeeeah, you're gonna fit right in here. Just try not to blow up the whole damn place before that."
Diego said with a laugh, and floated lower again.
"I don't shake hands, but fistbumps are cool."
And with that Diego floated down to Tilly's level and reached out his fist.

Well, he could take a joke, at least. That was comforting. She’d been about to say as much when her staff nearly turned the two of them into Flambe de Frutas. He didn’t seem too hot and bothered about their nearly-avoided immolation, though he float a ways away as precaution. That might have been a bit concerning if Tilly had stopped to think about the implications of it, but alas, who had the time?

He seemed quite a bit more cheery now that they’d survived imminent death together. Matilda smiled meekly, laughing along as he approached again.

”I’ll do my best.” She grinned as she offered her hand. She hesitated for a moment as he rejected her handshake but offered a fist bump, but went with it after just a moment.

”So I dunno if this is a rude question here, but uh… What are you, if you don’t mind me asking? I was thinking ghost at first, but my hand didn’t pass through yours, so now I’m a bit stumped.” She inquired, trying her best to be delicate, but it was all she could do to restrain her curiosity just enough to be what might be construed as polite. She couldn’t lie, she’d been eagerly awaiting this for ages. It was all she could do not to bombard the rather uninterested-looking air-floaty-boy with questions.

”So, Diego Tarzan, what’s next?” she’d ask, passing her staff back to her off hand so that she could move around a bit easier.

Tilda wasn't a total stickler, and answered Diego's fist bump. He could appreciate that, handshakes just felt weird and formal and honestly Diego didn't want to touch the hand of a stranger for that long.

"It's pretty standard, since some of these guys look vague as fuck. Most don't mind, but if you ask often enough you're bound to meet some sensitive or just tight-assed peeps."
Diego shrugged, not that he knew about this excessively. He usually didn't ask, even if he was curious.
"I'm just a human but with powers, I don't know if it's even got a name. Can fly, can do some wind, probably weigh less than your average ghost."
Diego smirked a bit, and floated down lower but still didn't touch the ground.

"I dunno, touring and stuff. Guess it depends on what kinda joints you wanna see first. You look like a nerd, how about the library?"
Diego really had no idea in what order he should do this tour thing. He'd be much better showing Tilda around the city, or rooftops. Those were kind of his jam.

She was relieved to find that her question was not as rude as it sounded. One wonders what would possess her to ask in the first place if she feared that her question was too impolite, but there you are.
”Oh, cool. Me too.” She replied automatically when Diego explained his powers. She blinked once, then put up a hand to correct herself. ”To the whole, uh, being a human with powers thing.” She added hastily. ”Not the controlling wind and flying thing. Not yet anyways.” There was a glint in her eye when she said that last part.

Some part of her wanted to play it cool and ask Diego to show her what he thought was cool, but to be honest, at the word library, her fate was sealed. She’d heard about this place and its immense arcanum. She had dreamed of taking a look of all the old tomes and spellbooks the place had to offer, so it was with no alternation that she nodded quickly with a big stupid grin on her face.

”Mhm! That sounds great!” She beamed.

"I kinda have a feeling there's a big difference between us, dude."
Diego answered with a huff when Tilda said she was the same as him. He couldn't exactly learn anything new without some assistance like Angelo had done, he just had what he had when he was born. And based on how Tilda worded the last thing she said insinuated that she learned new stuff all the time. It also made Diego raise a brow.
"You say it like you's about to take over the skies."
Diego said with an amused tone, this girl wasn't boring, at least.

Diego's guess had been spot-on, the moment he mentioned a library Tilda's eyes just lit up and Diego grinned a bit, amused at how easy the girl's excitement was to spot. He just wanted to start listing words and see which ones made Tilda light up.

"'Kay then, nerd. Follow me. Walking, since you can't yet fly, poor thing."
Diego snickered, and began floating out of the high school and middle school area towards the college dormitory. The library should be around there, just past the cafeteria. Honestly, Diego only knew the building 'cos he had hung out on its roof. That was how Diego knew most places, from their roofs.

Soon enough the two arrived in front of the library, it really wasn't that far away. Just laying his eyes on the pretty old-looking building that reeked of knowledge and books made Diego almost groan. He held back because that might've been a bit too much even from him.
"Here it is. So, how long are you gonna be stuck in there? Should I go grab snacks, and a tent?"

”Oh, most certainly.” Said Matilda sweetly. There was just a touch of pride in her voice, bordering on smugness, but not quite reaching it. When he inquired as to her ability to learn new things, her grin only grew wider still. ”Stop learning, start dying!” She said sagely, as if that cleared everything up. It was clear it was something she’d said a thousand times before, the sort of mantra one learns as a child and never lets go.

Seemingly oblivious to Diego’s amusement, she followed him eagerly to the library, asking occasional questions as she went, mostly about the buildings they passed en route. When they reached the building, Tilly couldn’t help but be awestruck. She’d never seen facilities as pristine as those offered by Starlight Academy, and the prospect of a place where she could find any and all information that her little heart could desire was enough to leave her starstruck. For a moment, she just stood there, staff in hand, like a Wizard of old, discovering a lost treasure trove of knowledge. She likened it to the library of Alexandria, standing here for anyone to access, freely.

Once again, she’d been standing there, lost in her thoughts, when Diego spoke again. She blinked dreamily, lazily turning her head towards him, half-listening. ”I didn’t bring a tent.” She mumbled, blinking once more and glancing over to him, now fully sober. ”Wait, you aren’t coming?”

"Okay, so you're like an ultra nerd. Sorry for underestimating you."
Diego answered after Tilda said that saying or whatever in a pretty know-it-all tone. Though Diego didn't care how much of a nerd this girl was, as long as she wasn't a stick in the mud she could be whatever she wanted.

Diego answered Tilda's questions the best he could, but the truth was that Diego really didn't know too much about individual places. Though he knew a lot about the cafeteria, food rocked. And as they arrived to the library Diego almost snorted at how amazed Tilda looked, like she had just seen a peek through the heaven's gate. Diego just saw a building, maybe a bit fancy looking, whose walls weren't really fit for graffiti. The colour was off and there wasn't a wide enough steady space to paint in. So basically useless, since Diego preferred to do really large murals.

"Earth to Tilda, anyone in there?"
Diego said, flying closer and waving a hand in front of the girl's face when she seemed to be out of it. Her head was in the clouds just because of a building filled with books, what a strange person.
"Books really, really ain't my jam, so I was gonna wait here or on the roof til you were done. Or in some other high place near here. Those are really much my jam."
