Facing the pack

Alexander had intentionally set up his camp a long way from the cabin, he had been careful to keep his distance from the pack's grounds. It was many months since he first identified the werewolf scent in the woods, and the least he wanted was a territorial conflict. In fact, he had even tried to hunt in such a way that the finer game was lead towards the pack's grounds. At least, he made sure that he did not cause the opposite effect.

Anyway, he had settled in fairly well, and now that spring was on its way, he had braced himself for the first confrontation. He wasn't even sure that the pack knew he existed, he was pretty sure he smelled like any other human. To his knowledge, he had kept out of their way to a hundred percent. Now, however, he had walked straight to their den. It was around noon, and he stood just outside the tree line. He nervously took a deep breath, through the mouth— the scent of unfamiliar werewolves was still a bit too much for him, and then stepped into sight. He walked up to the entrance and banged the robust door twice.

A few young eyes peeked out through windows. They disappeared as quickly as they came. Muffled voices could be heard through the closed door.

Soon, Raphael was opening the door to greet him. He was in his big, hairy, bearded human form, a rare sight outside of the Misfits' home base. Nobody in the wider world would recognize him here. Between the beard and the plaid, it was easy to see why some of his packmates made jokes that he resembled a lumberjack. His head nearly reached the top of the doorway.

"Hello, young man! What brings you to our humble cabin in the woods?" He hoped this wasn't another door-to-door salesman. He met one of those a few weeks ago, and it absolutely amazed him, given how far from any usable roads they were. Made him feel bad having to send him all the way back.

Alex eyed Raphael quickly, before offering him a handshake. "I'm Alexander, and I've come to befriend my kin." Alex had been unsure whether or not he should be secretive about his lineage, he knew that halfbreeds were sometimes frowned upon– but a pack that went by "misfits" would likely be of the reasonable kind... he hoped. "I'm told my mother's a werewolf." he added. He was still breathing through his mouth. He tried to hide this fact by flashing a flawed grin repeatedly.

"Oh!" Rafa sounded pleasantly surprised. "Well, you came to the right place, Alexander. Please, come in!"

He lead Alexander to a couch. Nearby, a pair of younger children were playing a card game on the floor. The cards had fancy pictures on them, and lots of text. They looked up from their game to observe Alex.

"I'm Raphael Quinn. I'm a police officer, and I'm one of this pack's Gammas. Alphonse, Kim." He looked to the two young werewolves, and gestured to their guest. "This is Alexander. He came here to meet more of his kind."

"Hi Alexander. I'd sniff your butt if that wasn't weird and rude."

"Don't do that Alphonse," chimed in Rafa. "That's weird and rude." Alphonse chuckled a bit and went back to his game with Kim. Kim didn't say anything. "They're students at the Academy," Rafa said. "I used to be one, too. I started middle school here, 14 years ago. Didn't know my parents very well, but at least one was probably a werewolf, if not both." He shrugged. "Pedigree isn't exactly important here. We take all kinds."

"So, how long have you been on the island, Alex?"

Alex stepped inside, his otherwise rather dead eyes brightening just a bit when he observed the many impressive hunt trophies. As the kids were introduced, he stepped over to them and crouched, smiling, to offer them each a handshake. He much preferred that over butt sniffing, which was indeed very weird. He had already identified the three's scents anyway, there was absolutely no need for sniffing. He only briefly looked at the cards, and soon returned his attention to Raphael.

Alex rose up and turned to Raphael. "I've been on this island for a year, I reckon. I've made camp on the other side of the lake, not too far from a mountain range. The winters are a lot milder here than where I'm from, so life outdoors is really comfortable." He was a bit more relaxed now, the police officer seemed kind, or at least polite. He lookd again in the direction of the trophies. "Tell me, are any of these prizes yours?"

"Yes and no!" Raphael said about the prizes. "We hunt them in packs. I've been involved in... a lot of these. But this guy right here was my first one we kept a trophy for." Even with his towering height, Raphael had to stand on his tiptoes to reach it. It was a large, scaly head with two horns and a beak. "Didja know there are dinosaurs in the Forbidden Forest? They taste kinda like chicken, too."

"That has to be BS," Alphonse protested.

"When have I lied to you? I promise you that they do." Rafa grinned. "I read somewhere that birds are actually a type of dinosaur. Raw dinosaur leg definitely tastes sort of like chicken, and I know this because once we tracked this old guy down, I spent the whole time trying to keep up with it and chomping on its leg, raurgh~" To help recreate the scene in Alex's mind, he pantomimed growling and chomping on a giant invisible leg as it continued to walk along, seemingly unhindered. When he finished his little act, he was grinning even wider, a grin that made it all the way to his eyes. "I was, maybe, 14 at the time."

Alex had, in fact, seen a dinosaur on the island before. The T-rex had, however, also been a citizen. The thought of wild dinosaurs very much sparked Alex's interest, but he knew that such prey could never be his own.

He laughed briefly at the act, storytelling had always pleased him. Nodding, he then commented: "Yes, I believe I have heard something along those lines too-- it would not surprise me if they do in fact taste like bird." Alex had no love for birds, and he grimly enjoyed eating bird meat on another level than other meats. He continued: "Say, do you hunt for dinosaur often? Do you sell any of the meat or other material?" He could not help but ask-- the chance to feast on dino meat, or getting his hands on dinosaur hide or bones would not go to waste.

"We do hunt pretty frequently," he said, "But usually not in the forbidden forest. That's less common, since it's more dangerous. We do that at least once a month on full moons, but when enough of us can get a break at the same time, we might roll out together." He threw himself onto a sofa. "I don't think we sell anything from our hunts, though. At least not the ones I'm on. We keep use as much as we can, generally. Why do you ask?"

Rafa had to admit, the dinosaur trophies were pretty cool. He imagined someone would pay big bucks for something like that - though of course, they had a lot more value to the people who actually took them down.

The image of a scaly dinosaur-hide tent shattered in Alex's mind. "No specific reason, really. I was just thinking that it's gotta be some pretty unique material– the closest I can imagine would be dragons... but they're magic, I think." He moved along the trophies, inspecting each one as he spoke over his shoulder. "You guys ever downed a drake? Or are they not considered appropriate prey? I'm still not quite up to date on all the species, I'm afraid. " Alex could not imagine mortals, no matter how many, taking down an adult dragon. That was probably something only demons or gods could do. Or a really big troll, he thought. He grinned at the idea for a second, before he turned back to Raphael.

Raphael spent a few seconds considering the logistics of a wolf pack taking down a drake.

"It's legal to take down a non-sentient dragon. That said, some of us could die if we tried that, unless we spent a ton of time planning it out or we used some special weapons." he decided. "It's not worth it. The exotic kills are fun to talk about, but the real goal, I think, is a pack bonding experience and connecting spiritually with our lupine sides. So, while it would probably be legal to take down a drake, since the Forbidden forest is a little too dangerous for most conservation experts to go in and make a rule against it... yeah, no, we aren't doing that."

He stared at the wall for a second. "Damn it, now I want to try dragon meat. I think I could get some from a specialty butcher's."
