Exploring

Iain climbed over rocks and boulders. It was very interesting here, really, and Iain found the quiet comforting. Back on Solo, it was always silent. Everyone spoke through thoughts, so there was no need for yelling. A thing that Iain was fast learning humans did a lot. Climbing on top of an extra large boulder, Iain looked around.

It was warm, and quiet. Leaning back against the rocks, he closed his eyes. Completely relaxed, Iain was not even hearing thoughts. He did not hear the thoughts of the trees, or the rocks. Nor the person walking up the rivine...

Elinor came running from the direction of the mountains. She had yet to sheath her sword, for the thought hadn't even crossed her mind as she ran away.

I'm never going back there, I'm never going outside again... I'll stay in the school for the rest of the year if I have to!

After running for so long, the girl fell to her knees, trying to catch her breath. She looked around, and realized that she was in the ravine of the cliff.

She had lived through her experience in the mountains.

She gave a sigh of relief and sheathed her sword. She looked around once again, and saw a boy sitting on a rock not too far away.

Elinor slowly stood up and walked over to him. "Hello... I'm... Elinor... Word..." she said between breaths.

Iain looked up. He looked confusedly at the girl for a few seconds until his translator kicked in. Then his face split into a wide smile.
"Hello!" He exclaimed in return. "I am Iain White! Are you fine?" Iain watched the girl in a way that would almost certainly make her laugh.

"Someone's... a bundle... of energy..." Elinor said with a slight laugh; not only at her coment, but at the way he was looking at her. "And... yeah... I'm fine... I'm alive... aren't I?" She smiled slightly, and sat next to him on the boulder.

"Nice to... meet you, Iain." She pulled some lose strands of her silver hair behind her ear. "What are... you doing... out here?"

"I am exploring! It is nice to get outside and explore, is it not?" Iain's grin widened even more. Much more and it would seem too big for his face! "And why should you not be alive, I ask? Is there something that wants you to be dead?" Iain pulled a small flat rectangular object out of his bag. Strapping it onto his wrist, a small 3d holographic projection appeared atop it.

"Yeah, exploring is fun... but not always," Elinor said.

"Um... nothing wants me dead... I was just being stupid and went up to the mountains to practice," she paused to point her sword, "and I came face to face with a dragon. I'm never going back there... and don't you go there either!"

The girl tilted her head at the projection. "What's that?" she asked, changing the subject.

"It is my computer. I was scanning for things in the mountain. But now I know why you were running. But what is a dragon? I will look it up." Iain looked at the comuter for a few seconds, then a projection of a dragon took the place of the first. An odd sort of rumbling came from the computer as the projection started to move.

"But what is a dragon?" the boy had asked... Elinor thought it a bit odd, but said nothing. She watched as the projection began to move.

"They're scarier up close," she said, trying to make a joke. But this time, in all seriousness, she said, "Promise me you'll never go to the mountains... at least, not alone."

Iain looked up. "I will not. They do sound very scary. But some are scarier than others, no?" He looked at her with inquisitive eyes. The projection shut down. Unstrapping it, Iain stowed it back in his bag.
"It was the best computer there was when I left Solo. I expect it is old now though."
