Everything Has Changed

It had been a few months now since Edward had accepted Nessie's proposal to move in with her. They'd been seeing each other rather seriously, so it only made sense that they start living together. If Fae could love, she would certainly love him; what she felt for Edward was more than what she felt for anyone else in her entire life.

Lately, things had been...different. Nessie was sick. At least, that's what she had come to believe. There was no fever, but she was rarely able to keep her food in her stomach...and often found herself throwing up throughout the day. After a few days of this, she decided to see a doctor about it.

Coming home, she wandered into the kitchen in a daze and set her purse on the island counter, sitting down on one of the stools. Perhaps she was just in shock. Her mind was still processing it all. This was huge news. How was she going to tell Edward? How would he react? She sighed and pushed her hand through her hair, trying to figure things out.

He wouldn't be home until later, so Nessie went up to her studio and made a valiant effort to lose herself in her art. It didn't work very well, but at least it would pass the time until Edward returned from school for the day.

Her stress levels rose as she heard the door open downstairs and she sighed, giving up on her painting and moving to the sink to clean out her brushes. The familiar, methodical work was somewhat comforting, but not enough to make her feel much better about what was going to happen, the uncertainty of it all. Would he even stay after this? She didn't want to lose him...she had no idea how he would react, and her mind was bracing itself for the worst.

She felt him approach her and put his arms around her. Turning off the water and hanging her brushes up to dry, she leaned back against him, trying to find comfort in his familiar embrace.

I saw a doctor today, she told him through their telepathic link, as calm and collected as she could. It was difficult to get over her fears of being alone...fears that hadn't come to light until she'd gotten so close to Edward that she couldn't bear to let him go.​

Nessie took a breath and looked down at their joined hands. He wouldn't leave her, not for anything...that was what she was trying to believe, but there was still that fear in the back of her mind that this would scare him away. She had to try, either way.

She used her words this time. The news was important, it had to come from her lips for it to be real.

"I'm pregnant."

Her eyes lifted to meet his, giving him several emotions. Worry, fear, nervousness...but also excitement. She found that she wanted a family of her own...with Edward as her partner for as long as they had on this earth.​

The silent moment between them seemed to go on for ages before he finally spoke. And he was...happy. Nessie's heart jumped and her stomach fizzled a little with joy as he hugged and kissed her. She smiled and nodded happily, they were going to have a baby. They were going to be a family. She hadn't realized how much she wanted this until it had dropped into her lap. Until she'd met him, Nessie had been so content in her long and quiet life here on the island, but Edward had changed so many things just by dropping into her world.

At his next words, Nessie frowned and shook her head quickly. No. You're staying in school, she told him firmly. Then she gestured around the room, Money isn't a problem, it never has been. Really, he should see her bank account; she was set to live very comfortably and support a family with what she made with her art over the years, not to mention her job at the modeling agency.

With a sigh, she took his hands again. I want you to finish school, get your degree. Please, do that for me, for our baby. Education is important.​

Nessie made a frustrated noise as he argued with her and then just stared at him in silence until he finally broke down and made an offer to compromise. She considered for a moment and then nodded - fine, he could get a part-time job if that's what he wanted.

I think we could turn the guest room down the hall into the nursery, she continued, now that the issue was settled. I'd like to paint a mural in there. Something...nature-y. The more they discussed it, the more real it was becoming. This was exciting.​
