Personality Description:

While having been raised in the human world his entire life, Emory does not sympathize in any way with the human race. He views humans as creatures that are leagues below him. Depending on his mood and what he thinks of a person, he’ll sometimes treat them as pet, sometimes a servant, sometimes a living encyclopedia to pull information from as he pleases. But most of all, he will treat all humans as toys. Humans are living dolls placed on a stage for his entertainment. He serves as the audience member to a play of mortals- and a rowdy audience member at that, one who will throw tomatoes at the stage if the show gets too boring.

In other words, Emory loves making mischief. Pulling pranks on others is his favorite and probably only pastime. He hates being stuck in classrooms, and tends to doze off, or instead uses the time to observe his classmates and scheme ways to prank each individual one of them. He’ll often take notes on which of his pranks are most successful, or on particular quirks that make his fellow students tick- however, these notes are written in faerie language, and impossible for humans to read.

Emory’s a bit sadistic when it comes to his jokes- no one is safe. It will not matter to him if he harms another person; he could kill a human in cold blood and think nothing of it. On the other hand, he does understand the concept of punishment, and hates it with a passion. Emory becomes like a child in the face of punishment; he’ll scream and pout and throw fits whenever he doesn’t get his way. However, Emory knows how to put on an act to avoid punishment. Posing as a human child has allowed him to perfect his manipulative methods in the face of authority. Around teachers and other adults, he appears a complete angel.

He has a weakness for shiny things and other finery, which is why he wears so many rings on his fingers. He can be found twirling them around when he’s bored. Additionally his deepest fears can be classified as rather childish- he is afraid of the dark, afraid of punishment, and afraid of being alone.

Powers:

Major: Pixie magic. As a pixie, Emory’s abilities include the following:

-Enhanced agility- Emory is naturally quicker than most.

-Dust- Emory, in his natural state, produces dust- yes, you heard right, real, genuine pixie dust. This can be used for temporary flight powers, sleep spells, invisibility charms, seduction charms, or temporary transfiguration (such as turning a human into an insect.) Each one of these requires a certain expenditure of the pixie’s energy, with transfiguration requiring the most. The more complex the change, the more power it requires. For example, turning a human into an insect requires less effort than turning an insect into a human.

-Disorientation- Pixies have the ability to confuse humans on the move, causing them to wander aimlessly and find themselves lost. Folklore defines this as a person having been “pixie-led,” and claims the cure for this involves wearing one’s coat inside-out. However, Emory has yet to find a person ridiculous enough to try this method, so it may or may not work.

-Glamour manufacture- Emory has the ability to control a glamour- a human looking appearance that conceals his natural form. It is significantly larger than his natural pixie self, which stands at roughly 5 inches in comparison to his human 5 feet. Needless to say, maintaining an appearance at that scale requires a great deal of energy.

Limitations: Because of his small size, poison and other harmful substances spread faster through Emory’s body. The same is true of the cold, and as such, he’s more vulnerable in lower temperatures. Iron is a deadly substance to his kind, and any contact will result in major burns on his skin. Due to his need to maintain a glamour, Emory’s power threshold is very small. Using more than one of his other pixie abilities a day would be exhausting while in his human form, and nearly impossible without causing him to pass out.

Emory’s name is merely the one given to him by his human parents; it is not his true name. If that were discovered, a person would have complete control over him, and he would have to do anything that person asked without hesitation.

Minor: When his wings are showing, he has the ability to fly. However, in order to blend in with the human population of Starlight, his wings are rarely ever visible. In addition, he can fly in pixie form about as fast as he can run in human form, so there’s usually little benefit to flying.

Biography:

Emory was born to a pixie family, with a faerie name, and while his parents were very pleased with their child, he was destined, from the moment of his birth, to be a changeling. Once his parents found a desirable human child, the pixie boy was given a glamour to appear like a human baby, and the two children were switched in the middle of the night. The newborn human was taken back to live with the faeries, while the pixie was left in a cradle within the large confines of Castelle Manor. He was then given the name meant for the human child: Emory Castelle.

At the time Emory was switched he was old enough to recall his pixie relatives, and grew up with the hope that they would one day return for him. Consequently he resented his human parents, and rarely ever showed them any sort of affection (which, if he did, was entirely fabricated).

However, he had to admit, the one good thing about his new parents was their money. Being the son of two aristocrats had immense perks, and Emory’s inheritance was through the roof. Anything the youth wanted, he received. He grew rather accustomed to this treatment, and concluded that the one thing all humans were useful for was providing him with sources of entertainment. Consequently, he allowed himself to be spoiled rotten by his newfound family.

Over the course of his childhood, the Castelles noticed that his behavior was unusually terrible, even for a boy his age. He would constantly throw violent tantrums when even the smallest things didn’t go his way- yet when faced with the threat of being punished, the boy would immediately turn sweet, apologizing and hugging his mummy and daddy. He would steal food from the kitchen, hoard expensive silverware and jewelry in his room, and put small things like cufflinks and reading glasses in the most ridiculous of places, so they couldn’t be found. The servants of the household had compiled a long list of complaints about the child’s jokes and abuse. His parents disregarded these actions for the first years of Emory’s life, claiming that it was “just what boys do.” However, when he never grew out of the bad behavior, they began to worry, and tried to find an expert to help them find the root of their son’s issues.

Due to his faster pixie metabolism, Emory’s hair and nails grew at rapid rates, which made him subject to incessant grooming, a task he found quite bothersome. He also remained terribly skinny no matter how much he ate- and he ate a lot, and practically anything placed before him. This behavior, too, was met with increasing concern from his parents the older the boy got. They consulted numerous doctors, specialists, psychiatrists- all of whom claimed Emory’s quirks were merely part of “a phase.” His parents weren’t nearly as convinced.

The Castelle family was one of old, deep-rooted nobility. Over the years they had developed some strange customs- including a strong fascination with and proficiency for arcane magic. These skills and knowledge were passed down the family line for generations, in order that they might protect their lineage from supernatural harm.

As a result, Emory’s parents had grown quite paranoid that their son might be possessed, or cursed, or a victim of some other supernatural horror (Ironically, not once did the word changeling enter the picture). His presence had begun to deeply disturb them, and they tried to avoid him at all cost. Naturally, this only served to amuse Emory further, and he increased his antics, focusing them solely on his mother and father. The couple was beginning to reach their limit, and had nearly resolved to consult an exorcist.

Alas, they had come to the wrong conclusion, albeit an understandable one. Their son had no hellish problems to speak of. But they soon would.

At the time, Emory was about thirteen, and there was an incident in the middle of the night, while he slept. The next morning he awoke to find a new butler serving him tea. This was strange, albeit not altogether unpleasant.

Upon being asked, the butler relayed the short version of the events that had transpired the night before: Emory’s father (or human father) was killed in an act of boredom by a demon. His mother, having witnessed the event used a spell she had learned through the family’s knowledge of the Dark Arts to bind that demon to the Castelles for eternity. The butler before him, calling himself Sebastien Alaude Crane, was that said demon.

This news was hardly shocking to the changeling boy- if anything, it meant that he no longer had any restrictions. His “parents’” resources had now become his: wealth, power, land, and time. No one was there to confine him to a schedule any longer. And as a bonus, he had a demon at his beck and call. He had the capacity to do literally whatever he wanted, and no one to stop him.

The human servants of the household noticed a change in Emory immediately. He was even more abusive towards them and the manor itself, breaking china and vandalizing portraits whenever the whim arose. He threw away his parents money on trivial things, like slingshots and feathers and rubber ducks, to be used for nothing more than elaborate pranks. The boy had no sense of responsibility or purpose, and he was already nearing adulthood. And there was the matter of that unusual butler who never seemed to leave his side.

The more the servants got suspicious, the more vulnerable they were to Emory’s wrath. He had even begun using his pixie dust to taunt them, causing a maid to fall asleep in the middle of doing laundry, or making himself invisible so that he might pinch the chef in various places as he attempted to cut onions. He would lead the servants astray frequently within the large mansion, causing them to break down into states of panic. He even turned one of them into a newt, and proceeded to laugh as the others screamed and it wriggled about the hall. Driving them all insane brought the faery endless amusement.

Nevertheless, there appeared to be a point when enough was enough. The letter from Starlight Academy arrived shortly after the newt incident, and the servants all but shoved their master on the boat to Manta Carlos. He shrugged them off, claiming to be bored of the Manor, anyway, and the Academy would provide him with all too many opportunities for mischief. Emory accepted the invitation- provided, of course, that he could bring his butler with him (not that his butler had much of a choice in the matter).

Additional information: Emory wears a gold pendant containing the seal by which the demon is bound to his family around his neck; this pendant allows his butler Sebastien to sense his location. Sebastien will respond to the boy’s every command with ruthless efficiency. Emory likes to keep his butler by his side as much as possible, but he understands that some orders will require Sebastien leaving him on his own for a time.
