Personality Description:

Piper is a ball of energy in every situation. She’s the type of girl who likes to get things done, always favoring taking action over waiting for something to happen. She’s very passionate and gung-ho about any project she gets herself involved in- especially when it comes to school.

Overall, Piper could be described as a quintessential nerd. She truly enjoys every aspect of school, including the homework. She’s also a walking library, never to be found without at least five books tucked neatly into her bag. And when it comes to books, she’s into everything- science fiction, fantasy, mystery, non-fiction, historical fiction, manga and graphic novels- you name it, she knows it. With television she’s the same way, always trying to stay on the cutting edge of geek culture. Needless to say, if you get talking to her on the subject of books and fandoms, she will not shut up. Ever.

Piper also has a small case of obsessive compulsive disorder. She likes things to be straight and proper and neat and organized- and when they’re not, she can go a bit crazy. Luckily for her, her power helps her to tidy up rather quickly, so her space is always pristine and arranged according to her needs.

Around other people, Piper’s nerdiness tends to stand out, but she is always well-meaning, and tries very hard (if maybe too hard) to leave a good impression of herself. Regardless, she is very opinionated on most issues, and not afraid to speak her mind. While she may not seem like the type, Piper is quite spontaneous- she’s eager to engage in the slightly dangerous and risky behaviors of her fellow young adults. She understands how good life can be for the young, and doesn’t want to miss a moment of it. As a result she has become a bit of an adrenaline junkie. Within the confines of her perfectly tidy little bubble, she gets an immense thrill from living on the edge and rebelling against the system- so long as it’s not her system.

Powers:

Major: Particle Manipulation. Piper has the power to move small particles with her mind. These particles can range in size from that of an atom to a marble. She can move them at velocities high enough to cause a pea to have the same force on impact as a bullet. However, the larger the particle she has to move, the more mental strength it requires. If she is tired, lacking in concentration, or even missing her glasses, the largest she will be able to move is a grain of sand.

Minor: When she reaches a point of extreme anger or tranquility- in other words, when her mind is utterly free of thought- she can force the molecules around her to vibrate so quickly that they heat up and combust, turning into flame around her. This can be used as a self-destruct mechanism, allowing her to light herself on fire. The fire can then be concentrated into a powerful beam that is highly effective against foes. However, if it is not concentrated quickly enough, Piper can burn herself. The concentration of this flame into a beam takes a huge amount of energy, but is conscious; the initial formation of the fire by heated particles, by contrast, is unconscious.

Biography:

Piper lived a mostly normal life, born to a small suburban family in central Florida. Her parents cared for her dearly, and Piper’s childhood was always filled with fantastical stories told by her mother. The youngest of three girls, Piper was clearly the brains of the family: by the age of five, she was reading whole novels bigger than the chapter books her 8-year-old middle sister was reading. Her parents strongly encouraged her education, and made sure she always had access to a vast multitude of different reading materials.

Piper’s obsession with reading later developed into an obsession with learning, that stayed with her well into her elementary and middle school years. She was always referred to as the “teacher’s pet,” whether endearingly or mockingly. She received straight A pluses in all of her subjects, taking the most advanced subjects she could until, eventually, she was encouraged to skip a grade. Although she would have to abandon her childhood friends, she was more than itching to expand her knowledge, and thus, happily accepted the proposal.

It was around that time when her powers started to make themselves apparent. Her sisters began to notice that while their sides of the room constantly had to be cleaned, Piper’s was always spotless. The neatness was partially due to Piper’s obsessive-compulsive tendencies forcing her to keep things organized- but even taking that into account, her side of the room just always seemed unnaturally cleaner, as if all her possessions were brand new. The two of them did a bit of investigating, and one morning discovered her moving dust particles from her side of the room to theirs. They immediately told her mother, who at first scolded her for dirtying up her sister’s things, then, once they’d left, encouraged her to explore her power further. She, along with her husband, were proud of their daughter’s skill, and wanted to see it blossom.

Piper entered middle school a grade ahead of most students her age and significantly smaller than her classmates. Because of this, and her “nerdy” temperament, she tended to be a victim of bullying, not just by those whom schoolyard society deemed “popular,” but by a larger percentage of the school’s population. During the three years of middle school, students would knock her lunch off the table, steal her homework assignments, hit her schoolbooks to the floor and subject her to varying degrees of verbal abuse. Piper was, naturally, left a bit perturbed by this- however, she had a close core group of friends, plus her older sisters, to keep herself grounded. Additionally, she had her books- which, to her, were the best friends she could ask for.

The last straw, however, was reached at the end of eighth grade, when a group of boys took one of her favorite books from her. Frantically, she tried to retrieve it from them, as they tossed it back and forth between each other. One of them had the bright idea to toss it into the pond just outside the school. Piper watched in horror as the cover sank beneath the cool black surface of the water. A slow, steady stream of rage began to flow through her, until her face- and her entire body- had turned bright red. She could hear her blood pounding within her ears- that, and nothing else. Before she, or her tormentors, knew it, the air around her became white- hot, as Piper was engulfed in flames. The boys panicked, running back inside the school to fetch the nearest teacher, who, upon arriving at the scene a mere moment later, sprayed Piper down with a fire extinguisher. An ambulance was called, and Piper was taken to the hospital.

She received some second-degree burns, but to the relief of her parents, Piper recovered quickly and ended up just fine.

Shortly after that incident, Piper’s invitation to Starlight Academy came for her in the mail. However, after some family discussion, the girl decided to decline at first, allowing her to instead complete her four years of high school in her hometown, under her parent’s care. By the time she graduated, she had been accepted to the Academy for college, and planned to study architecture. With her older sisters already having gone off to university before, Piper’s departure from her parents was not a difficult transition for them- though they still send emails constantly, to Piper’s exasperation.

Additional Information: Piper is into learning all about everything, new and old. She tries to keep knowledgeable about a wide range of topics, from technology to history to literature. However, because she tries so hard to learn so much, her memory is a bit selective, and she mostly retains only the tidbits that are interesting to her from each field.
