Hwum was an individual who didn't complain unnecessarily. If she knew things could be changed and made better Hwum would try and do so, but she wasn't a dreamer. Hwum was a realist. And realistically speaking it was improbable Hwum would ever be able to see the blue sky. She couldn't see during the day, and she couldn't see colours. Hwum didn't even know what "blue" looked like.
But...Hwum couldn't help but wonder. Maybe that was why she looked at the black night sky, dotted with stars, and tried to imagine what it could look like when it was blue.
But all she ever could imagine were different shades of white and black. Sky of snow, or sky of onyx.
Hwum climbed up the stairs, her shoes off because the staircase was lit up with torches and Hwum could only see within the dark shadows along the corners. Hwum stubbed her tow few times, and let out small yelps of pain. Damn her sensitive pain receptors to the Earth's core.
But eventually Hwum reached her destination, the rooftop. She opened the door, and was a bit disappointed to see(or, well, not see) that it was lit up by lamps too. Thankfully not as strongly, and Hwum could see a corner of the roof where it was dark and she could see. Hwum headed there, and blinked her eyes as she stepped into the darkness. This was her place. In the shadow. Hwum looked behind her, but could only see white and some spots that were also enveloped in the darkness and she could see in. She sighed a bit and looked forward. Hwum couldn't even see down properly, the school yard was illuminated. So the only place Hwum could look was up.
Hwum gazed at the sky, and now a small smile rose to her face. Even if it was black and white looking at the night sky was nice. It didn't have aurora borealis like back home though. The Pillar had told Hwum the aurora borealis was actually coloured in all shades of green and pink and even blue. It sounded amazing, but all Hwum could ever see was light grey and slightly less light grey.
But it was fine this way. Hwum was fine. She just needed to...settle for this.
That's all she had to do.
Hwum took off her shoes, and ignored the dull sting of cold on her bare feet. She wanted to be able to see in both ways.
