"Hm... Hm... I think I can do something here... Let me see...", the text box expanded at Symlink's gestures, hexadecimal rows appeared along with strange codes, he moved lines around with a flick of his fingers, his eyes darting about. He was rewriting some things of his dream at the moment. The text box had a new blank option for a moment, the sky had a moon in a sunny sky for some reason, but soon it looked like nighttime. The moment he was done, the Bard option was available, and the box shrunk to normal with the options it had plus the new option.

Rhys watched in awe as Symlink did... things. Things Rhys had little to no comprehension of beyond that it was some kind of way of controlling or changing this 'dream' thing they were in. And as soon as they blinked the afterimage of the changing lighting out of their eyes they saw the new option. Clearly added just for them.

So they picked it. If Symlink thought it made the most sense then who were they to argue?

Suddenly they were wearing a far more colorful and eye-catching outfit than they had been before. They raised their hands up agian like paws but their tail swished slightly and Rhys smiled a little. "I have never worn clothes like this before. Will being a Bard help you in the adventure?"

"There we go. Bard is just like a Wizard or Cleric, just better at support than both of them!", Symlink's tail swished about, but something was off for a brief moment: the background glitched, misplaced tiles and palette. The moment he noticed that, he made a quick correction and focused back on Rhys.

"I think I also set the day to pass by accident, which also means-", before he could finish, a guard opened the door, walked in, and addressed both of them.

Guard:
"His Majesty requests your presence within the throne room in regards to the permission you have requested."

And then he left them to be. "That answers it. I know how it will go: we will talk to the King and he will tell us something and then give us the Royal Letter.", of course he knew, Symlink experienced this over and over...

Rhys continued to smile. Supporting better meant helping more and they liked to be helpful. Bard would work very well for them-

Oh. They were already being summoned to meet with the King. That was both exciting and terrifying, but Rhys tried to act like they weren't scared. They nodded. "Ok, so we need to go talk to him and get the letter so we can go on your adventure. That makes sense I think. Do I need to know anything about how to talk to a king? I've never met one before"

"Don't worry. This is just like any other old game: NPCs always says the same thing no matter who speaks to them. I will show you.", and thus Symlink led them to the throne room, and once he approached the king and thus His Majesty spoke to them.

King:
"After enough deliberation We resolved to grant thee safe passage through our gates. However be mindful that thy adventure will be most arduous, monsters roams these lands spreading fear and suffering among kingdoms, tearing us all apart, attempting to bring about an ancient evil that once took us all light."

"Nevertheless, there are brave folk, who despite all odds, even despite all animosity between The Wildkin and Humans, do just as thee did and defy fears that once drove us insane, horrors that haunts the night, darkness that robs all sight. For such brave folk, tis be hard to deny their request."

"Please, take this humble pouch of fortunes and royal scroll, and have a safe journey. We expect to see the end of it in a good light."

And thus, a pouch full of gold coins and the Royal Letter was given to them. Further interaction with either the guards, King or Queen only resulted in simple answers:

King:
"How is your adventure going?"

Queen:
"My husband never talks about it, but I was the one who eloped him and led the creation of this kingdom upon the ruins of an abandoned village. He wasn't royalty, but I was."

Guards:
"Psst, be glad he didn't make a huge talk about his days of glory. He goes for HOURS when he does that speech."

Like any other old game. Rhys nodded along like that made sense to them but they didn't have the experience to make the connection there. It was great that they could just follow along with Symlink or they'd have been lost.

Rhys bowed respectfully to the king and listened intently as he spoke to the room. Only moving forward once he commanded them to take his favors.

They explicitly avoided bothering anyone, being physically unable to speak with anyone but symlink or the king, and not wanting to poke their nose into it too much besides. However they did smile in amusement as Symlink showed off what other people might say if interacted with.

Rhys immediately offered Sym the money pouch and letter to see if they wanted to take them. "Are we really going to be in danger? I've never fought anything or anyone before," they whispered to Symlink.

While leading Rhys back to the town after taking the boon granted by His Majesty, Sym responded to their question: "Well... We won't feel pain or the like, but we have to keep this in mind.", he pointed up to a box that showed their HP and... It was two digits at most. But Symlink's MP was close to getting into three digits, and Rhys' was a little over halfway to Symlink's. "If our HP gets down to 0, we will respawn at the church with half the gold we had. But with your supportive skills and my offensive and defensive skills, it should be not worrying enough.", he shrugged the concern off that easily.

Rhys curiously examined the boxes and stats Sym had pointed out. Odd. But Sym was acting like this was a perfectly normal situation so Rhys simply nodded and mentally made a note to keep an eye on these apparently important numbers.

"I will do my best to keep our HP from going to 0 then. Thank you for explaining all of these things to me- I am not used to things like this but I learn quickly." They smiled, giving off an honest sense of satisfaction at being able to state their strength in learning.

"Can you tell me how I use these new skills or do I need to figure out how they work myself?"

"Hm... Since you are not like the usual player character, I think you will control your own choices in battle. Should show up a box with options like Attack, Defend, Skill, Item, then you just pick what to do and the target.", as he explained he began browsing the weapon store.

Rhys continued to follow Sym and nod along. This world didn't make a lot of sense to them but they made mental notes on everything Sym explained. They weren't especially sure they'd be using that Attack option much but like their new acquaintance had said- Bard were good at doing supporting actions and that was right up Rhys' alley.

They were just about to ask if there was anything else they needed to get when Sym started looking through weapons. So Rhys held their tongue and stood there waiting to help if it was needed. Glancing around at the various deadly implements on display and hoping to see none of them in a more up close and deadly perspective.
