Angelo reached out, trying to take her hand. Trying to hold it.

"I mean everyone. Me, and everyone else." Maybe Shay. Maybe not. "Asking forgiveness to the people you've wronged matters. But asking forgiveness from whatever higher powers you believe in matters too."

But that was it. He didn't know what else to say. He didn't know how to make things better. Or how to show her all that he was.

Angelo wasn't sure if there was more to him. Maybe there wasn't.

Shay stared at Angelo. She opened her mouth to say something but thought better of it. Why tell him she didn't think a higher power would be watching over them. That higher power regulated all their work down here, to little ants like her. That higher power never answered her prayers, why would she want their forgiveness? She wasn't even going to get an afterlife. That higher power was an asshole.

Shay smiled at Angelo and took his hand in both of hers to squeeze them gently and smile softly at him. "You're right. Maybe that's worth thinking about. I'm sorry, Angelo. I'm... not exactly myself right now. I'm tired and sore and... The Bonfire wasn't easy. Even before the chimera, even before Charlie was roasting fuckin' marshmallows over the flame. I saw Nick. The one person I didn't want to see.

"I'm glad you took me in and saved me from a life of crime and I'm sorry I hurt you tonight."

He didn't know how much of what she said was true. Was she trying to make things better? Was she just saying what he wanted to hear?

The paranoia was getting to him, but he squeezed her hands anyway.

"You shouldn't have had to see him," Angelo said. It would explain it, yes. But the doubt was still there. "You didn't... you didn't hurt me. Not like that. It was the truth, and even if the truth can be hard to digest it's still the truth."

It hurt, but she hadn't hurt him. He'd hurt himself by getting caught off guard by the whole thing. By misjudging.

"I know, but life is pretty unfair. I'll be fine. We'll be fine. Just need some time, I think. I'll be careful of Charlie. I can't kick him off my club, at least I don't think I can, but I'll keep watch." She kissed their entwined hands before resting her forehead on them.

"I should head home before it gets too late. Fitz'll worry if I'm not back." She was quietly contemplative, somewhat hesitant to ask her next question. "We still on for Christmas dinner, right?"

The conversation was over, even if it left Angelo feeling like he'd swallowed lead. Nothing about the conversation sat right with him. It was just supposed to be a warning about Charlie. Instead, it had become something... else.

He would be thinking about it for a long time.

"Yeah, we're still on for christmas dinner," Angelo confirmed. He wouldn't change that.

But that was all there was. Angelo would see her out, and then he'd go back to his room to lie down and stare at the ceiling, replaying every word and filled with doubt.
