James

James let out a long sigh. He was acting like it was nothing, because he didn't want to drag Jae into his problems. He didn't want to burden Jae with the fact that he felt like a monster every time he used his powers. That the only thing he felt his powers were good for were destruction.

Jae had been quick to gloss over the fact that James almost killed him. If Jae hadn't pulled the ability to use water magic out of his ass, James dreaded to think what would've happened. That whole mess had only proved to James that he was going to kill someone with his powers. And he was terrified of that thought. He didn't want to hurt anyone, or burn the world to the ground, he just wanted to be normal.

"You don't have to act like it's nothing."

"I TOLD YOU I'M FINE. WHY CAN'T YOU JUST LEAVE IT ALONE?!" James yelled, turning towards Jae. The fireball had left his hand before he even knew what he was doing.

James sighed and Jae scrabbled to deduct where he went wrong. Did he say the wrong thing? Maybe it was too hypocritical of him to expect James to open up when he, himself, had a history of bottling his emotions. Perhaps, but Jae felt he could open up to James. Even after accidental mind control and accidental forest fires, they were still friends. So, Jae pushed when he should have listened to his instincts and shut up.

Fear flashed across Jae's face. He heard James yell, and saw the fireball building in the teen's hands. Several thoughts collided at once, too fast for Jae to properly process.

The fireball flew in an arc towards him, almost in slow motion. Jae moved, agonizingly slow, in time to turn away from the fire and save his face from harm, but not fast enough to entirely avoid the flame. Burning, sizzling pain brushed down his shoulder and arm as the hit knocked him back. Jae hit the ground with a heavy thud.

James

James blinked as Jae fell to the ground. "Shit... shit shit shit fuck.. I'm.. I wasn't trying to.. I didn't.. I'm sorry." James stammered as he took a hesitant step towards Jae. He feared Jae was dead, though that thought was quickly dispelled when he could see that Jae was still breathing. Still, Jae was weak to fire, James could have killed him.

He could have killed him.

Fear shot through James. For the second time, he'd nearly killed Jae, but this was so much worse than just accidentally starting a forest fire. No, he had willfully tried to hurt him. James was a monster.

Quickly, he pulled out his phone and dialed for help, before leaving it in the dirt next to Jae and wondering off deeper into the woods. Maybe he would go to DCA, or somewhere else. Right now, he just needed to be alone.

Jae's senses were overwhelmed. The heady smell of salt and fish, the crashing roar of waves and underneath that the crisp coolness of freshwater trickling out of rocky springs. The ocean covered him like a heavy blanket until he Jae was all but certain he were water. He was salt and wave, stream and spring. Yet it was the burning pain in his shoulder that kept him grounded. It hurt so much that Jae couldn't have turned into a puddle of water.

Time was fuzzy and Jae was unsure how long he laid on the ground, writhing in pain. At some point the pain lessened but Jae couldn't be sure through the assault on his senses. Then, like the end of high tide, the feel of the ocean faded away. Jae woke up in the school infirmary, an iv in his arm and his shoulder bandaged. It looked like he was going to be okay. . .but what happened to James?
