Tian couldn’t remember who, exactly, he heard it from first, but he could remember what it felt like.

“Hey, did you here? Jake is gay.”

A different Jake.

“Jake Machin, you mean? Yeah, I did.”

A sudden burst of amazing hope.

“Hear how it happened?

“How what happened?”

“How he was outted.”

...only to be overpowered by fear…

“No. It wasn’t voluntary, then?”

...complete fear…

“Definitely not.”

...and anger…

“Here’s how it happened…”

...and disgust.

Tian was a whirlwind as he raced up stairs and corridors, knocking past students of all aged with little more than a half-assed “sorry” as he went. He didn’t care for pleasantries, not then. The only thing on his mind was Jake.

Jake, the kind boy with a shy infatuation for music.

Jake, the awkward weirdo who hung upside down during casual conversation.

Jake, always so… ashamed with the subject of love, who had just been outted to the entire school.

Tian was so afraid for him.

He just hoped that Jake was okay.

Panting lightly, Tian finally reached the dorm Jake once said to be his. He took a moment to gain his breath before knocking gingerly on the door.

“Jake?” Tian began. His tone was careful, soft, with a lace of well-placed worry. “It’s me, Tian. Are you there?” As an afterthought, he added, “I just… want to see you real quick. If that’s okay.”

Tian waited patiently for a response, repaired to press this time if Jake tried to push him away. It was a big deal… A big deal that, if Tian knew Jake at all, was going to affect him. Deeply. Negatively. It was a big deal, and he couldn’t just leave Jake alone, whether he wanted company or not.

He just… needed to see him. Tian needed to see his friend and try, at least, to show him it was okay. And that he didn’t need to be ashamed. Because if the rumors were true, Jake was locked in his dorm, alone, and he had been there for a while. And that wasn’t okay. That wasn’t okay with Tian at all.

Jake felt like shit. The first person he had trusted with his biggest secret had spread it around the school like wildfire. He had the idea that maybe this place was different, accepting of people, but there was always the voices in his mind from the place he used to call home. The venom that would leave the mouths of those he shared a house with, though not always directly, would make him doubt himself, make him feel like a mistake that the world would frown upon.

He didn't want to go out, afraid of the onslught of mockery and insult that would come his way, so he just lay on his bed with his earphones in, listening to the music on a cheap MP3 player and just staring at the ceiling.

Even though the volume was enough to drown out a thunderstorm, his hearing allowed him to hear the quite knock on his dorm door. Taking one earphone out, Jake sat up and listened to what the person was saying. It was Tian.

Tian was always kind to Jake, maybe a bit too kind at times but Jake considered him a good friend. He was usually very bubbly and energetic, which was not what Jake wanted right now - he wanted to be left alone, hence the reason he was locked away in his dorm. He just sat there, listening, not wanting to speak up or send him away. It was unlikely Tian would leave anyway, even if he asked. Slowly, he paused the music, curled up the earphones and walked towards the door. After a second of pausing with his hand on the door handle, he unlocked it and opened the door.

Tian felt both a surge of relief and a flash of anxiety as Jake opened the door. At first, he felt an unbearable urge to hug his friend, but... he felt it wouldn't be the best course of action. Not this time. But he couldn't help but notice that Jake looked like he felt like shit. He looked like he wanted to be alone, away from everything, and though Tian's mind told him to let Jake have his way, his gut told him to stay. And Tian, a fire elemental as he was, almost always listened to his gut... At least to some degree.

Nevertheless, Tian put a filter on himself, not wanting to come on too forcefully, too hyper. That wasn't good in these situations. Jake needed... calm. Easy. Just, there, really, and Tian could do that. He could.

"Hey. I... Can I come in?" Tian asked. He didn't want to say anything just yet, afraid of a door being shut in his face. At the same time, Tian realized how unready he really was to talk to Jake about this. On one hand, he wanted to ask, wanted to comfort... But at the same time, he wanted to show that nothing was going to change. Nothing had to be wrong about this, nothing to be ashamed of... If there was ever a time that Tian had to wing something, and wing it successfully, it was then.

Jake just sort of stared for a bit too long than would have been normal. "Erm...yeah, sure," he said, his hand rubbing his face as he said it and moving aside to let him in. Though he didn't want to admit it, he really wanted someone there to talk to, to listen. Not someone to mock him; Tian was not one to mock when someone felt as Jake did.

Shutting the door after he entered, Jake turned to face him, unsure of what to say or do. He was also unsure that if he opened his mouth, the sadness would to turn to rage like it had before and he didn't want to hurt Tian.

Jake opened his mouth, about to say something, but closed it just as fast. What does he start with? Taking a breath and closing his eyes for a second, he asked, "Would...would ya like a drink?"
